Start with the work you expect to do and what you already own. Harbor Freight’s homeowner guide names tightening cabinet hardware, hanging curtains, patching drywall, assembling furniture, and responding to a leaking water supply among common household tasks. It recommends a base of hand tools—including a hammer, screwdrivers and hex keys, tape measure, pliers, adjustable wrench, utility knife, stud finder, and level—then points to power tools for particular jobs.

The Harbor Freight Editorial Team’s “Must-Have Tools for New Homeowners,” published July 9, 2026, says: “The most useful power tools for homeowners are a cordless drill, circular saw, and power sander.” That is the retailer’s recommendation, not an independent consensus. Because the original five picks in this series are unavailable here, confirm the prior article’s list before treating any item below as an additional recommendation.
Use this as a shortlist, not a requirement to buy everything. If your current hand tools already cover occasional jobs, a new powered tool may add little value. For powered tools, count the full setup—tool, compatible battery and charger if needed, and task-specific accessories—rather than judging by the bare-tool price.

Its listing includes a claw hammer, screwdrivers and bits, adjustable and combination wrenches, hex keys, a 3/8-inch ratchet and sockets, pliers, a tape measure, a torpedo level, spring clamps, and a case. Harbor Freight described it as suitable for home, office, or automotive repairs. The listing displayed $59.99 when reviewed on October 7, 2026, and was marked in-store only; check the live listing for current price and availability. The piece count describes the contents, not how many pieces you will use.
The product page states a lifetime warranty subject to limitations. Harbor Freight’s general warranty page also describes lifetime coverage for hand tools, subject to limitations; read the specific product terms. A case helps keep a starter set together, but check its size and contents against your available storage and actual needs.

2. A cordless drill/driver for fastening and holes
A cordless drill/driver makes repeated screwdriving and drilling easier than doing every task by hand. It is useful for assembling furniture, hanging curtains, and installing or adjusting hardware, provided the job and wall material are within your skill level. For a single screw or occasional small adjustment, a manual screwdriver may be sufficient.
Compare the total setup cost: drill, battery, charger, and the bits needed for your fasteners and materials. Check whether a selected tool is sold as a kit or tool-only, and whether any batteries you already own are explicitly compatible. Harbor Freight says Bauer and Hercules tools share compatible platform batteries, but verify the exact tool-and-battery combination before buying. Its homeowner guide characterizes Bauer as suited to regular DIY use weekly or less and Hercules to daily use; this is Harbor Freight’s own guidance, not a comparative performance test.
Storage is modest compared with larger saws, but keep the drill, charger, battery, and bits together. Warranty terms vary by product line and model, so check the individual listing and owner’s manual rather than assuming all cordless tools have the same coverage.

3. An oscillating multi-tool for tight, controlled cuts
An oscillating multi-tool can help with detail work where a larger saw is awkward, such as trimming or cutting in a confined area. It is a more specialized purchase than a drill: consider it when a project calls for controlled cuts or scraping that your existing hand tools cannot do efficiently. For occasional work, a hand saw or scraper may be adequate, depending on the material and access.

It is tool-only: the BAUER 20V lithium-ion battery, charger, and accessories are sold separately, so include those items in the cost if you do not already have compatible equipment. The product listing states a limited 90-day warranty.
Harbor Freight says its universal-fit blades work with its oscillating tools and that Starlock blades are incompatible. Confirm compatibility for the exact model and accessory before purchase; do not assume that guidance covers other tools. Its brand guidance positions Warrior for occasional small projects, Bauer for regular DIY use weekly or less, and Hercules for daily use. Harbor Freight advises using lighter pressure, letting the tool work, and testing the speed on scrap because suitable speed depends on the material and accessory. Follow the owner’s manual and use appropriate safety gear.

4. A power sander for surface preparation
A power sander can speed up surface preparation before painting or refinishing, especially when a project involves more than a small area. Harbor Freight’s homeowner guide includes sanding among its recommended homeowner power-tool uses. For a small patch or occasional touch-up, a sanding block may be the more economical and easier-to-store choice.
Before choosing a sander, identify the surface and the kind of work: broad, flat areas and detailed edges may call for different sander shapes and abrasives. Include replacement sanding sheets or discs in the cost, and check whether the model is corded or battery-powered. A cordless model also brings battery and charger costs unless you already have compatible equipment. Store the tool with its abrasives and dust-management accessories, and check the specific model’s warranty and manual.

Harbor Freight’s homeowner guide recommends one for cleanup. For occasional light dust or a small amount of debris, a broom, dustpan, or existing vacuum may be enough if its manual permits that material.

Choose based on the debris and cleanup tasks you expect, then check the required filters, bags, hose or nozzle accessories, and storage footprint. Do not assume an ordinary vacuum is suitable for liquid; follow the vacuum manufacturer’s instructions for wet use and for the material being collected. Compare the full cost of any required accessories and confirm the product-specific warranty before buying.
