For a dry, shaded strip, creeping Oregon grape, kinnikinnik, bigroot geranium, lilyturf, or creeping snowberry may be candidates—but they are not interchangeable, and regional suitability matters. First check the bed’s width, light, soil, and intended purpose; then choose plants that fit without swallowing the path.
Check the side yard before choosing plants
Side yards often have conditions that a plant list alone cannot account for: narrow beds, shade from a wall or fence, dry soil beneath the eaves, shallow ground, and buried obstacles. The Royal Horticultural Society notes that wall-side beds can receive less rain and may contain rubble or restricted soil. Its guidance also cautions against raising soil above the home’s damp-proof course. RHS guidance on planting beside walls.

- Measure the bed and path. Record the actual planting width and leave enough room to walk and access utilities. Narrow wall-side borders are a poor match for broad or spreading plants.
- Observe the light. Note direct-sun hours and when they occur, as well as shifting or dappled shade. UF/IFAS describes shade-tolerant conditions as fewer than four hours of full sun, preferably during cooler hours, or shifting or mottled shade. Deep shade created by a building or fence may be too dark for planting; fertilizer cannot make up for insufficient light. UF/IFAS guidance on shade.
- Check moisture and drainage. Shade does not necessarily mean moist soil. Walls can block rainfall, while tree roots can leave shaded ground dry. Check whether the soil dries quickly, stays wet, or drains poorly.
- Choose the job. Decide whether you need a low ground layer, flowers, screening, or herbs. Keep walkways separate: many groundcovers do not tolerate foot traffic. Gravel or mulch can create a simpler path.
Aspect can also affect the planting conditions. The RHS says south- and west-facing walls are usually warmer and sunnier, while east- and north-facing aspects tend to be colder and shadier. A sunny strip may suit a raised bed or container herb garden better than a shade groundcover; UF/IFAS suggests those options for sunny spaces. UF/IFAS guidance on landscaping for specific sites.

These are regional examples for shaded, relatively dry side yards—not a universal ranking or a guarantee that every plant will work in every location. Check local hardiness, invasive-plant guidance, mature spread, and nursery availability before planting.

If you need screening or herbs instead
For a narrow screen
UF/IFAS gives ‘Sky Pencil’ holly and clumping bamboo as examples of tall, narrow plants for screening. Treat them as region-dependent options, not automatic choices: check mature dimensions, local restrictions, and the care each requires. A narrow form can help conserve path space, but it still needs enough room to grow.
For a sunny side yard
Where the strip gets useful sun, UF/IFAS suggests a raised bed or container herb garden. Containers can make use of limited ground space; place them so they do not obstruct the walkway and choose plants for the actual amount of sun the site receives.

How to keep the planting low-maintenance
Plan for establishment, not just mature care
Low-maintenance does not mean no watering after planting. UF/IFAS’s South Florida guidance estimates that a plant in a 1-gallon container may need about six months to establish, while a 3-gallon plant may take about one year. These are regional estimates, and actual needs vary by species and site. Water plants while they establish rather than assuming drought tolerance applies immediately. UF/IFAS low-maintenance landscape plant guidance.
Group plants with similar water needs
Colorado State Extension recommends grouping plants with similar water requirements in the same irrigation zone. That makes it easier to water appropriately without giving a dry-site plant the same schedule as one that needs more moisture. Colorado State Extension dry-shade groundcover list.

Respect walls, paths, and utilities
- Keep added soil below the home’s damp-proof course.
- Do not rely on shade alone to determine watering needs; check for dry soil caused by rain shadow or tree roots.
- Choose mature plant dimensions that fit the bed, and leave a clear walkway.
- If the darkest patch is too dim for plants, use a suitable hardscape surface rather than trying to compensate with fertilizer.
