5 Landscaping Ideas That Use Sand Well

Sand works best in a landscape when its role is clear: it can form part of a designed paving base, shape a path, or describe the soil plants must grow in. These five ideas show how to use it while accounting for foot traffic, drainage, regional plant suitability, and upkeep.

1. Build a permeable paver or stone patio

A small patio can create a defined outdoor living area while allowing water to drain through the paving assembly. The University of Florida IFAS Extension describes pavers and stone set on a sand-and-gravel bed over filter fabric as one approach. Sand here is a base material, not a loose surface layer.

Base depth and materials depend on the paving system, ground conditions, and intended use, so follow the paver manufacturer’s instructions and the project design rather than treating this as a universal installation recipe. See UF/IFAS’s landscape design ideas.

2. Lay a stepping-stone path through planting beds

Stepping stones can define a route across a lawn or between beds without paving the entire area. Paths guide visitors, help keep feet dry, and reduce soil compaction. Stones may be paired with project-appropriate joints or fill; the right choice depends on the path design and site.

  • Improves the look of house plants by covering the soil
  • Suitable for decorative use in clear vases, dish gardens and terrariums
  • Loosen heavy or compacted soil
  • Helps protect and retain moisture

A slight cross-slope can help move water off the path. The University of Florida’s path guide also discusses flagstone, gravel, and mulch as options, so choose materials to suit the circulation, drainage, and maintenance needs. See UF/IFAS’s guide to landscape walkways.

3. Turn sandy soil into a planting bed

If sand is already the soil beneath the yard, choose plants for the actual site instead of trying to make every bed suit moisture-loving species. Sandy soils tend to dry more quickly and retain fewer nutrients than finer-textured soils, which affects both plant choice and watering.

Check the bed’s sun exposure, moisture, local climate, and deer pressure, then consult a regional extension service for suitable plants. For coastal and sandy settings in Maryland, examples from University of Maryland Extension include butterfly weed, little bluestem, and beach plum. These are regional examples, not a general planting list for every sandy yard. See University of Maryland Extension’s guidance on planting in pure sand.

4. Create a water-wise planting zone

Group plants with similar water needs and plan irrigation by zone. This makes it easier to water appropriately as plants establish and to avoid treating a whole yard as if it had the same demand. Sandy soil’s tendency to dry faster means a planting plan should account for moisture retention as well as plant labels and local conditions.

Do not assume that adding sand makes a garden low-water or easier to grow. Start with intended uses, site conditions, and water needs; arid-climate planning guidance from the University of Nevada, Reno Extension offers a framework for designing a water-efficient landscape. See its landscape-design guidance for Northern Nevada’s arid climate and Utah State University Extension’s overview of gardening in sandy soils.

5. Use planted edges or a rain garden to manage runoff

Where grading and site conditions make it safe to receive stormwater, a rain garden can temporarily hold runoff and allow it to infiltrate. Dense planting with fibrous roots along an edge can also help reduce runoff and erosion. These features need to fit the way water actually moves across the property; they are not substitutes for proper grading or local drainage requirements.

Before placing a rain garden, confirm where runoff comes from, where it can go, and whether local rules apply. UC Statewide IPM’s landscape design and water quality guidance covers planting, runoff, and erosion considerations.

How to choose the right idea

  • For regular foot traffic: Consider a defined patio or stepping-stone path, with the base and fill selected for the specific paving design.
  • For a planting area: Treat sandy soil as a growing condition; select locally suitable plants and plan for its moisture and nutrient-retention limits.
  • For water management: Evaluate grading and runoff first, then consider planted edges or a rain garden only where the site can safely accommodate stormwater.
  • For lower irrigation demand: Group plants by water needs and design irrigation zones; a sandy surface or soil alone does not make a landscape water-wise.
