In the United States, apples, pears, grapes, cranberries and persimmons are useful fruits to look for in fall. Broad seasonal charts place grapes, cranberries, pears and persimmons in a September–November window, while apples are listed as available year-round and also associated with fall and winter. Those are general guides—not a promise that every fruit is at peak harvest or available locally.
Five fruits commonly associated with fall
These five offer a mix of familiar produce and seasonal options that may be less common in a shopper’s routine. The windows below come from a broad seasonal produce chart and should be treated as general planning guidance rather than a local harvest calendar.

Why fall availability varies by location
“In season” is not a single nationwide timetable. Growing conditions, weather and regional climate affect when fruit is harvested, while sourcing affects what reaches a particular store. US Foods notes that “Seasonal produce in your area will vary by growing conditions and weather.” A chart is therefore a starting point for choosing what to look for, not confirmation of a farm’s current harvest or a retailer’s inventory.

Regional calendars can differ in what they list. For example, the Administration for Community Living’s Southeast fall list includes grapes and muscadines, pears and persimmons. That regional example should not be applied as a nationwide schedule. See its seasonal produce list by region for the regional framing.
How to use a seasonal chart when shopping
- Use the month range as a prompt. September–November is a broad reference for pears, grapes, cranberries and persimmons, not a guaranteed local harvest period.
- Check where the fruit came from. If local or peak-season sourcing matters, ask the seller or check the label for origin and current availability.
- Choose for your purpose. Decide whether you want fruit for fresh eating, cooking or a seasonal dish, then select from what is actually available. A seasonal chart alone does not establish preparation, storage, flavor, price or nutrition comparisons.
Market reports are not local harvest calendars
The USDA Economic Research Service’s “Fruit and Tree Nuts Outlook: September 2026,” published September 24, 2026, analyzes supply, demand, prices and trade for several fruit commodities, including apples, grapes, pears and cranberries. It provides market context; it does not establish precise local harvest dates or current prices for a shopper’s area.
