A timeless Tuscan-style garden can start with five plants: olive, Italian cypress, lavender, rosemary and Cistus. Which plants make a Tuscan garden feel timeless?
Use the plants for different visual jobs rather than treating them as a checklist. Olive and cypress create the strong tree forms; lavender and rosemary bring aromatic, sun-loving planting; Cistus adds a flowering Mediterranean shrub. Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, grows Tuscan olive trees, Italian cypress, lavender and Cistus in its Mediterranean Garden, while the Mediterranean Garden Society describes a broader Tuscan-style palette. Five plants and the role each plays
1. Olive (Olea europaea): a distinctive focal tree
An olive’s evergreen presence and characterful form make it a natural focal point. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) recommends a sunny, sheltered position and well-drained soil; olives can also grow in large containers. Lavender is one possible companion for a sunny site. 2. Italian cypress (Cupressus sempervirens): a strong vertical accent
The Italian cypress contributes a tall, narrow evergreen shape that contrasts with the broader forms of trees and shrubs. Kew includes it in its Mediterranean Garden, making it part of a documented Mediterranean planting example. Check its suitability and mature size for your location before choosing a planting spot.
3. Lavender (Lavandula): fragrant, flowering color
Lavender brings aromatic foliage and flowers to a sunny, dry-leaning border. The RHS describes it as drought tolerant and popular in Mediterranean-style planting. Its needs still have to match your soil and local conditions; consult the RHS lavender guide.

4. Rosemary (Salvia rosmarinus): useful, aromatic shrub structure
Rosemary supplies evergreen, fragrant foliage and a low-shrub form, as well as leaves for the kitchen. The RHS calls it a sun-loving Mediterranean shrub and describes it as attractive, drought tolerant and easy to grow. 5. Cistus: a flowering Mediterranean shrub
Cistus broadens the planting beyond herbs and evergreen tree shapes with a flowering shrub. Kew lists Cistus among the shrubs in its Mediterranean Garden. As with the other choices, check that the plant and its growing conditions suit your site before buying.

How to choose plants for your site
A Mediterranean look alone does not guarantee that a plant will thrive in your garden. Before buying, assess the conditions at the intended planting site and compare them with each plant’s requirements.
- Sun and shelter: Olives prefer sunny, sheltered positions, while rosemary is described by the RHS as sun-loving. Consider how much sun the planting area receives and whether it is exposed.
- Drainage and winter wet: Olives prefer well-drained soil. Check whether water drains away and whether your winters are wet, as well as whether the site suits the other plants.
- Local hardiness: Check regional guidance for winter conditions and exposure before choosing plants. The RHS advises selecting drought-resistant plants that are suited to local growing conditions.
- Mature size: Make room for each plant’s eventual shape, especially the tall, narrow cypress and the olive as a focal tree.
- Water after planting: Drought tolerance is not a reason to ignore establishment needs. Follow local advice for watering newly planted specimens and for your soil and climate.
The RHS offers guidance on planting for dry soil and choosing drought-resistant plants suited to local conditions. The Mediterranean Garden Society also explains the value of designing for a Mediterranean climate.

When to plant
There is no single planting calendar that applies to all five plants and every region. For rosemary in the UK, the RHS recommends planting in spring, once the soil is beginning to warm.
