Here are five projects, with practical guidance on gathering, assembly and care.

1. Make a fresh evergreen wreath
For a classic wreath, start with a wire wreath frame or a sturdy ring made from gathered twigs. You will also need evergreen branches, hand pruners and floral wire. The Missouri Botanical Garden wreath guide lists 22-gauge wire among its supplies; a twig ring is a practical alternative if you have suitable branches.
- Cut manageable evergreen tips with hand pruners. When clipping a live branch, leave foliage behind rather than stripping the branch bare, as advised by Illinois Extension.
- Lay a small group of short branch sections against the ring, all facing the same direction. Wrap floral wire around their cut ends to secure them.
- Overlap the next group over the wired ends, then continue around the ring until the base is covered. Tuck the final tips under the first group and fasten them.
- Add cones or colorful twigs if you like, securing each with wire. The RHS wreath instructions describe wiring short pine branches onto a pre-formed ring and wiring a cone into place.
Keep the wreath outdoors in a cool location if possible. The RHS recommends keeping the moss in an evergreen wreath moist. Fresh cut greenery dries quickly indoors, so keep cut ends in water where practical and do not leave a dry wreath near candles, fireplaces or other ignition sources. Discard it when it becomes dry or brown.

2. Build a pine-cone and nut wreath or rounded ornament
A foam form covered with pine cones and nuts makes a dense, rounded decoration that does not rely on fresh greenery. The Chicago Botanic Garden describes this kind of durable design using materials that can be gathered in a yard.
- Choose a foam wreath form for a wall decoration or a ball-shaped form for a rounded ornament.
- Arrange cones and nuts against the form before attaching them, turning the pieces to find a close fit and an appealing mix of shapes.
- Secure the pieces to the form, working across the surface until the base is covered. Use a glue gun where appropriate and take care with hot glue.
- Let the decoration set before hanging or placing it. Store it in a dry place between seasons.
If you gather cones or nuts outdoors, collect only where you have permission and where gathering is appropriate. The Chicago Botanic Garden notes that well-stored pine-cone or evergreen creations can last many seasons.

- Choose a stable vase and add water if you are using fresh greenery.
- Place the tallest or most colorful twigs first, spacing them to create the arrangement’s outline.
- Add evergreen clippings around the stems, turning the vase as you work so the greenery is balanced from different angles.
- Add rosemary or other suitable garden material sparingly as a contrasting accent.

4. Cover a form with dried flowers or seed heads
Dried materials offer texture without the same need to keep cut stems hydrated. The Chicago Botanic Garden describes attaching dried material to a foam form with a glue gun, including garden-grown options such as dill or fennel seed heads.
- Choose a foam form and gather dry flowers or seed heads that are fully dry and hold their shape.
- Lay out the materials first to decide how you want to distribute color, size and texture.
- Attach pieces to the form with a glue gun, adding them close together for fuller coverage or leaving small gaps for a lighter look.
- Allow the glue to set, then display the piece in a dry location away from heat or flame.
Dried stems can be fragile, so handle them gently during assembly and storage. A twig wreath base can replace a foam form where its shape and the chosen attachment method allow.
