5 Creative Ways to Turn Your Walls Into Living Art With Plants

Plants can turn a bare wall into a focal point, but the right approach depends on the wall’s light, structure, available space, and how much watering and upkeep you can manage. These five ideas range from a trained climber to an engineered living-wall panel, with practical considerations for each.

Choose a wall format before choosing plants

Green walls can be as simple as a climber growing against a suitable wall, or as involved as an engineered system of planters, felt, or modules. Indirect systems use wires or a trellis to support plants without relying on them to attach directly to the wall. The RHS guide to green walls explains these formats and their installation and care; YourHome’s guidance on green roofs and walls likewise describes approaches ranging from low-tech to complex.

Before settling on a design, assess the wall’s size and location, its light and moisture conditions, the support and drainage it can accommodate, and your willingness to maintain it. Simpler direct greening or DIY trellises generally involve less system complexity than a professional living wall; engineered systems can require irrigation and convenient access for care. These are qualitative differences, not a universal cost ranking: costs depend on the wall and system.

1. Train a climber into a green mural

A climber or wall shrub can make a simple, changing artwork. Train growth around a shape, frame a doorway, or let seasonal foliage and flowers become the display. The RHS names pyracantha as one example of a wall shrub and also describes using wires to train plants.

Do not assume every plant will attach safely to every surface. Choose a species and support method suited to the wall; wires can provide an indirect route where direct attachment is unsuitable. Check that the plant has appropriate light and moisture, and leave access for pruning and inspection. A climber is a relatively straightforward idea, but it still needs training and routine care.

2. Turn a trellis into an edible display

A trellis or wire support can make vertical space useful as well as attractive. Herbs or fruit can be part of a green wall, according to the RHS, but the edible planting needs conditions that suit the chosen plants. Treat this as an option for a bright, appropriate site with a support system that can carry the plants—not a promise that every edible crop will thrive on any wall.

Plan for access to harvest and tend the plants, and consider how water will reach the root zone without damaging the wall or creating runoff. If the site is shaded or the wall’s conditions are otherwise unsuitable for the intended crop, choose another design or different plants.

3. Compose a grid of wall-mounted pots

Individual pots let you arrange a geometric pattern, repeat colors, or make a display that can be rearranged as plants change. A modular kit can hold vertically arranged pots; DIG’s 2020 product catalog describes a “Living Wall” kit and suggests uses including herbs, vegetables, annuals, and perennials, indoors or on a patio. That catalog establishes the concept, not the current availability or configuration of a particular product.

Check the mounting instructions and load requirements for any system before installation, and make sure each pot can be watered and drained appropriately. Individual pots offer flexibility, but their small growing spaces may dry at different rates, so the display still needs regular checks. Keep the arrangement within reach for watering, trimming, and replacing plants.

4. Build a modular living-wall panel

A panel of planters, felt pockets, or modules creates a denser, more continuous green picture than separate pots. The RHS notes that some smaller panels can be added over time and that grow-bag-style products can offer an option for smaller budgets. Starting with a small area also helps you understand the watering and maintenance workload before expanding.

Engineered living walls often need irrigation, and larger systems may connect to drip irrigation, according to the RHS. Plan for drainage, a dependable water supply where required, and access to check the system and tend the plants. Indoors, insufficient natural light may call for supplemental artificial lighting; the RHS discusses this option, while LiveWall’s indoor living-wall information covers lighting considerations for its own system.

5. Create a mixed-texture plant mural

Contrast foliage shapes, heights, or colors to make a wall read like a living composition. The RHS lists herbs, fruit, grasses, and ferns among possible green-wall plant groups, and its examples include heuchera, thyme, sedum, carex, and ajuga. Those are options to consider, not a ready-made combination: plants in one panel or section should share compatible light and moisture needs.

As the RHS Advice Team puts it, “To simplify planting and watering needs, try to choose plants that have similar light and moisture requirements to the conditions on offer.” For a wall receiving less than half a day of midsummer sun, RHS advises choosing plants for shade; that guidance is specific to the stated outdoor context, not a universal light threshold for every indoor plant or climate. Sketch the planting by conditions first, then use texture and color to shape the artwork.

Plan light, water, and upkeep around the wall

Check the growing conditions

Observe the wall’s actual light and moisture conditions before selecting plants. For an indoor display, assess whether natural light is sufficient and whether the chosen system allows supplemental lighting if needed. Match plants to the site rather than expecting a design to overcome unsuitable conditions.

Make watering and drainage practical

Watering depends on the format and plants. Directly planted climbers, pots, and engineered panels do not share one universal schedule. The RHS notes that engineered planter and felt systems often need irrigation, while larger living walls may use drip irrigation. LiveWall says its indoor system can be watered by hand or built-in irrigation, and its maintenance guidance varies recommendations by plant type and site conditions, including orientation and light, maturity, and average daily temperature. Follow the instructions for the specific system rather than applying a generic timetable.

Leave room for routine care

Every design needs access for its ordinary tasks: training or pruning a climber, harvesting an edible trellis, checking pots, or inspecting irrigation and drainage on a panel. Choose a scale you can reach and maintain. A dense display may make a stronger visual statement, but it should not obstruct the checks needed to keep the wall and plants in good condition.
