Yes—most working soundbars can earn a useful second life. The safest approach is to keep the bar as a complete, powered speaker system and match one of its existing inputs to a new source. A desk computer, phone, bedroom television, projector, games console or workshop can all benefit, provided the ports, power supply and wireless accessories still work.

Do not cut the enclosure open or treat the drivers as ordinary passive speakers. Soundbars commonly combine proprietary amplification, digital processing and model-specific subwoofer links. Check the model manual before buying an adapter, and stop if the unit shows electrical damage.

  • Confirm that it powers on reliably and that the power cable or adapter is intact.
  • Test at least one input and listen for clean sound at low volume.
  • Check the remote, or verify that the physical buttons can select sources and control volume.
  • If a subwoofer is included, confirm whether it pairs with the bar.
  • Stop using a unit with a burning smell, swollen components, exposed conductors, liquid damage, overheating or intermittent power. Use a qualified repair service or responsible electronics recycling instead of opening a mains-powered enclosure.
  • Find the exact model manual. Port labels and USB functions vary substantially between soundbars.

Identify the ports first

Feature Good second-life uses Important qualification
Bluetooth receiver Phone, tablet, computer and casual music Delay and codec support vary; Bluetooth reception is not transmission.
AUX/3.5 mm Computer, older television, projector or portable player Simple and widely compatible, but analog cables can pick up hum.
Optical/TOSLINK TV, computer, console through a TV or projector The source may need PCM/stereo if the bar cannot decode its selected Dolby or DTS format.
HDMI ARC/eARC TV-centred setups Both devices must use ports specifically labelled ARC or eARC; an ordinary HDMI input is not equivalent.
USB Computer audio or music files, only where documented Some USB sockets are for firmware updates, flash-drive playback or service work, not audio input. Creative documents USB audio on Stage V2 but describes the Stage 360 service USB for firmware upgrades (Stage V2 documentation; Stage 360 documentation).
Proprietary wireless subwoofer Use with the original compatible soundbar Usually cannot be connected as a generic RCA subwoofer.

Choose the connection with the fewest complications

  1. Use HDMI ARC/eARC for a compatible television.
  2. Use optical for low-latency digital audio from a TV, computer or projector.
  3. Use USB only when the manual explicitly identifies USB audio.
  4. Use AUX when the source has a headphone or line output.
  5. Use Bluetooth for convenient music, accepting that video and gaming may have delay.

1. Make it a desktop or computer speaker

Best for

A home-office desk, gaming PC, laptop, Mac mini, ultrawide monitor or second workstation.

Connection choices

  • USB audio: computer USB output to a soundbar USB audio input, if the manual supports that function.
  • AUX: computer headphone or line output to the bar’s AUX input.
  • Bluetooth: pair the computer with the soundbar.
  • Optical: use a computer optical output or a USB-to-optical adapter.

Do not assume a computer’s normal HDMI output will operate an ARC soundbar. ARC is designed to return audio from a compatible TV or display to an audio device.

Setup

  1. Centre the bar beneath the monitor and keep it clear of the display’s IR receiver and webcam.
  2. Connect the simplest compatible input and select that source on the bar.
  3. Choose the soundbar as the computer’s output device.
  4. Play a stereo test track.
  5. Set computer volume around 70–80%, then use the soundbar for ordinary adjustments.

Common problems

  • No USB sound usually means the socket is not a USB-audio input.
  • Bluetooth delay is a reason to switch to USB, optical or AUX for games and video.
  • A hum may improve after using one wall outlet, removing unnecessary analog connections or adding a ground-loop isolator.
  • A wireless subwoofer may need its original pairing procedure and transmitter.

The bar saves desk space and can sound fuller than laptop speakers, but widely separated bookshelf speakers normally provide a wider stereo image.

2. Use it for Bluetooth music, podcasts and ambient audio

Best for

Kitchens, bedrooms, home offices, parties and background listening. Bluetooth-capable models can receive audio from a phone or tablet without a television attached; see examples from Creative and VIZIO.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pairing steps

  1. Turn on the soundbar and select Bluetooth.
  2. Hold the Bluetooth or source button until the pairing indicator flashes. For example, Creative Stage V2 enters pairing mode after holding Bluetooth for two seconds; its manual describes an eight-second hold to clear stored pairings (manual).
  3. Open Bluetooth settings on the phone or tablet and select the model name.
  4. Start playback and set a comfortable volume.
  5. If it reconnects to another device, temporarily disable Bluetooth on that device or clear the pairing list as the manual directs.

Keep the bar ventilated and dry. It still requires mains power and is not an outdoor speaker unless the manufacturer explicitly gives it a weather-resistance rating. Creative lists up to 10 metres/33 feet in open space for Stage Pro, with walls and structures reducing that range (Creative Stage Pro specifications).

Amazon Fire TV Soundbar, 2.0 speaker with DTS Virtual:X and Dolby Audio, Bluetooth connectivity
  • Amp up your audio - Fire TV Soundbar enhances TV audio with dual speakers for fuller sound, clearer dialogue, and deeper bass—all in a compact design.
  • Immersive sound - Enjoy a three-dimensional virtual surround sound experience with DTS Virtual:X and more detail with Dolby Audio.
  • Easy setup - Just plug in the included HDMI cable to the HDMI eARC/ARC port on your TV to instantly enjoy audio that's always in sync.
  • Compact design - With a length of 24“ and a height of just 2.5", Fire TV Soundbar fits most entertainment consoles and TV stands.
  • Stream audio with Bluetooth - Connect your phone or tablet via Bluetooth to fill the room with your favorite music.

Bluetooth is convenient for music but can introduce lip-sync delay. TCL specifically recommends treating it primarily as an audio-streaming connection when video timing matters (TCL guidance).

3. Give a bedroom or spare-room TV better sound

Preferred connection order

  1. HDMI ARC/eARC: best when both devices support it.
  2. Optical: dependable when ARC is unavailable.
  3. AUX/headphone output: useful on older televisions.
  4. Bluetooth: acceptable only when delay is tolerable.

HDMI ARC setup

  1. Connect the television’s port labelled ARC or eARC to the soundbar’s ARC/eARC port.
  2. Select the bar’s TV/ARC source.
  3. Set the television to external speakers or HDMI ARC audio output.
  4. Enable HDMI-CEC if volume control or automatic switching does not work. Brand names include Anynet+, BRAVIA Sync, EasyLink, SimpLink and Aquos Link.
  5. Set digital audio to PCM if the bar is silent with a Dolby or DTS setting it cannot decode. Creative’s ARC instructions cover cable, CEC and PCM requirements (Creative ARC guide); LG shows the corresponding TV menu path (LG instructions).

Optical fallback

Connect the TV’s optical output to the bar’s optical input, select Optical, and choose PCM in the TV’s digital-audio menu if there is no sound.

If audio is missing

  • Verify both cable ends and the selected source.
  • Turn off the TV’s internal speakers or choose external output.
  • Enable CEC for ARC.
  • Power-cycle both devices.
  • Test optical or AUX to establish whether the fault is ARC-specific.

This is often the most valuable reuse because it preserves the product’s intended role. Older models may not support eARC, Dolby Atmos or newer gaming formats, so promise only formats listed in the manual.

4. Use it for gaming, a projector or a media room

Console and streaming setup

  1. Connect the console or streaming device to a TV HDMI input.
  2. Send TV audio to the soundbar through ARC/eARC, or use the TV’s optical output.
  3. Select ARC/TV or Optical on the soundbar.
  4. Set the console and TV to a format the bar supports, then test game audio and dialogue.

TCL describes this general routing for PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch and streaming devices (TCL setup guidance).

  • WIDE, NATURAL SOUND: 2 angled full-range drivers deliver a more realistic, spatial audio experience for overall better TV sound from a small soundbar

  • SIMPLE SETUP: A single connection from this compact soundbar to the TV via an optical audio cable (included) or an HDMI cable (sold separately) has you up and running in minutes

Projector connections

Use the projector’s optical or 3.5 mm output when available. If it provides only HDMI, an audio extractor can pass video through while exposing optical and analog outputs. Monoprice’s Blackbird documentation lists HDMI pass-through with 3.5 mm stereo and optical S/PDIF outputs (manual).

Choose wired digital or analog audio for rhythm games, competitive play and dialogue-sensitive video. Bluetooth latency varies by source, codec and receiver.

5. Create a workshop, home-office or background-audio system

Suitable locations

A dry workbench, craft room, home gym, reading room or secondary office can all benefit from clearer speech and music than a phone or laptop provides.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Place the bar securely near a grounded outlet, away from walkways and moving tools.
  2. Pair a phone, tablet or computer, or connect AUX or optical.
  3. Keep the remote labelled and nearby.
  4. Use a moderate maximum volume so alarms, machinery and voices remain audible.
  5. Put a bundled subwoofer on the floor with clearance around its ports.
  • Protect the enclosure from sawdust, filings, grease and water.
  • Do not mount it beside a heater or in a damp outdoor area.
  • Do not use sustained loud playback that masks safety warnings.

When an adapter makes sense

Buy compatibility hardware only for a specific mismatch. An HDMI audio extractor is appropriate when a projector or source offers HDMI but the soundbar accepts optical or AUX; a device such as the Monoprice Blackbird extractor is an example. A Bluetooth transmitter is useful when the source must send audio wirelessly and the soundbar is a receiver. Avantree notes that a TV with only HDMI ARC/eARC needs an ARC-capable transmitter or HDMI extractor before a standard optical/AUX transmitter can be used (Avantree transmitter guidance).

Prefer a direct cable when one fits. Before purchasing, verify ARC direction, video pass-through, supported audio formats, optical PCM requirements and whether the soundbar already receives Bluetooth. If the adapter, repair and proprietary-accessory costs approach a replacement speaker, stop spending.

Questions that prevent costly mistakes

Can the internal speakers become separate stereo speakers?

Usually not without model-specific electronics. Do not cut proprietary cables, bypass the amplifier or connect unknown terminals to another amplifier.

Can the subwoofer work by itself?

Only when it has a standard audio input or the manufacturer documents standalone operation. Many wireless subwoofers pair only with their original bar.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a soundbar join a new surround system?

Usually no. It is generally a self-contained system rather than a generic centre, left, right or surround speaker.

  • Simplified 5.1ch Dolby Atmos Setup: Enjoy immersive 4D sound with real Dolby Atmos and 5.1-channel audio. Five built-in speakers, including two side-firing drivers, create wide surround without rear speakers. Precision DSP ensures <0.5 ms latency for smooth, theater-like sound. Setup takes less than 1 minute.
  • Voice Clarity Enhancement: VoiceMX technology uses advanced DSP algorithms to isolate and enhance vocal frequencies in real time. Dialogue remains crisp and easy to follow by separating speech from background effects and music, even at low volumes or during intense scenes.
  • 300W Output with 6-Driver System: Featuring five precision-tuned full-range drivers and a dedicated wired wooden subwoofer, the system delivers up to 300W of peak power for bold, room-filling sound. With a frequency response of 45 Hz–18 kHz and a maximum SPL of 99 dB, it reproduces everything from subtle nuances to explosive cinematic effects.
  • 18 mm High-Excursion Driver: Powered by BassMX technology, the wired wooden subwoofer features a 18 mm high-excursion driver, a 5.3L tuned cabinet, and a high-density magnetic circuit. This design delivers deeper, tighter bass with greater air displacement and enhanced low-frequency performance—bringing more realism to every scene.
  • HDMI eARC for True Dolby Atmos: HDMI eARC supports up to 37 Mbps of bandwidth, unlocking the full potential of lossless Dolby Atmos 5.1-channel audio. Compared to standard ARC, eARC delivers richer surround effects and greater detail. CEC integration allows the TV and soundbar to work together with unified control.

Can a Bluetooth adapter make it battery-powered?

No. A receiver can make a wired source wireless, and a transmitter can send TV audio to the bar, but the mains-powered bar still needs its power supply.

Can it be used outdoors?

Only when the exact product is explicitly weather-resistant. Ordinary soundbars are not presumed safe in rain, humidity or exposed outdoor power conditions.

When recycling or donating is the better choice

  • The unit has electrical damage, overheating or an unsafe cable.
  • It has no working input suitable for your source.
  • The remote or proprietary subwoofer is missing and the bar cannot be controlled or completed.
  • Required adapters cost close to a reliable replacement speaker.
  • You would need to open, rewire or modify the enclosure.

For a healthy unit, the most sensible second life is the one that uses an existing cable and requires no internal modification: Bluetooth for casual music, optical or AUX for low-latency computer and video audio, and HDMI ARC for a compatible second TV.
