1. Choose a bright, well-drained site
Give garden mums at least six hours of direct sun a day, as Iowa State University Extension and Outreach recommends in its chrysanthemum-growing guidance. Chrysanthemums generally do well in full sun; in hot climates, afternoon shade may help, according to the UC Statewide IPM Program.
Use fertile soil that drains well. A site that stays soggy can invite root problems. For garden planting, Virginia Cooperative Extension recommends spacing mums 18 to 24 inches apart; adjust spacing to the variety and whether you want a denser planting or larger flowers. In a container, make sure excess water can drain away.
2. Water for steady growth, not saturated soil
Keep moisture reasonably consistent while the plant is actively growing, adjusting for rainfall, heat, drainage, and whether the mum is in a pot or the ground. Iowa State advises watering during prolonged dry periods when the soil is dry, and notes that mulch can help conserve moisture. Virginia Cooperative Extension recommends soaking the ground during drought when soil becomes too dry.

Where practical, water the soil rather than wetting the leaves. Virginia Cooperative Extension notes that leaf disease is less troublesome when foliage stays dry, especially overnight. There is no reliable universal watering calendar: a small pot in hot, windy weather dries faster than garden soil after rain.
3. Pinch early to encourage branching
Pinching removes the growing tip and encourages side branches, producing a fuller plant. Iowa State recommends two or three pinches in spring and early summer for most garden mums. Pinch when shoots are about six inches tall; Virginia Cooperative Extension gives a similar stage of six to eight inches and advises removing about half an inch from the tip.

- Check the plant in spring as new shoots grow.
- When shoots reach the recommended height, pinch off the soft tip with your fingers or use clean pruning shears.
- Repeat as new growth develops if appropriate for the cultivar and local season.
- Stop pinching before flower buds form. The latest safe timing varies by cultivar and region, so follow a local extension calendar if one is available.
Pinching too late can remove developing buds and reduce flowering. Do not assume every spider-form cultivar follows an identical schedule.
4. Feed according to the plant and growing conditions
Chrysanthemums benefit from water and fertilizer during active growth, but the right feeding depends on soil fertility and whether the plant is growing in a bed or container. UC IPM describes regular water and fertilizer during the growing period; UF/IFAS also describes slow-release fertilizer in its chrysanthemum guidance.

Use a fertilizer labeled for the setting and follow its directions and local extension advice rather than applying a universal rate. Iowa State cautions that excessive feeding can contribute to lanky growth. If you are unsure whether garden soil needs fertilizer, a soil test can help guide the decision.
5. Stake tall plants and inspect for problems
Tall cut-flower types can break or fall and may need staking, Virginia Cooperative Extension notes. Lower-growing varieties generally do not need support when they are properly pinched, fed, and watered. Place a stake early enough to support the stem without damaging roots, and tie loosely as the plant grows.

Check leaves and stems regularly for changes rather than treating a guessed diagnosis. UC IPM lists aphids, spider mites, and thrips, along with diseases such as leaf spots, blights, and rots, among chrysanthemum problems. Identify the likely cause before choosing a treatment, and match any treatment to the confirmed problem and local guidance.

“Spider” refers to the flower’s shape: Virginia Cooperative Extension describes spider mum flowers as having long, tubular petals. It does not tell you whether a plant is winter-hardy where you live. UF/IFAS advises choosing plants labeled “garden mums” for garden planting because they are hardier than those labeled “florist” mums, but the sources do not establish that every spider-form cultivar is hardy in every climate.

When buying a plant, check its cultivar, mature height, intended use, and local hardiness with the seller. A label identifying spider flower form alone does not guarantee garden suitability.
Virginia Cooperative Extension’s Garden Mums for the Home Garden puts the core routine plainly: “The important cultural practices are pinching, feeding, and watering.”
