Better Homes & Gardens (BHG) tested five options that cover very different needs: a roomy pop-up, a wood-framed structure, a raised-bed cloche, a walk-in shelf unit and a narrow patio greenhouse. Its updated January 8, 2026, review reports useful details on dimensions, assembly, ventilation and stability—but the picks are not interchangeable, and the largest may not feel small in a typical yard.

How BHG tested the greenhouse kits
BHG says it tested eight greenhouse options in locations around the country. Testers installed them on level ground in full sun, placed plants inside and monitored conditions with thermometers and hygrometers during an initial two-week period. They assessed insulation, ventilation, stability, durability and signs of weather-related wear or damage; when needed, they used fans, insulation, heaters and pest controls such as sticky traps.
The article does not provide a standardized score, complete location list, weather-station data or a numerical comparison across all eight products. Assembly times, temperatures and durability observations below are therefore BHG’s reported results under its testing conditions, not guarantees for every garden or climate. Read BHG’s full review.

It measures 118.1 × 118.1 × 109.1 inches, so measure the actual footprint before treating it as a small greenhouse. BHG testers assembled it in 15 minutes. The included metal anchors helped it feel stable in testing, and testers reported that the cover stood up to daily use and extreme weather during their observation period. In an observed storm, rain did not pool on the roof. Roll-up screened window coverings and a roll-up doorway allow adjustment of heat and humidity.
Best wooden: Yardistry Urban Greenhouse
The Yardistry is the pick for gardeners who want a compact, more permanent-feeling structure rather than a lightweight seasonal enclosure. Its 3 × 3 × 6-foot dimensions make it taller than its square footprint suggests. Polycarbonate panels and an FSC-certified premium-lumber frame distinguish it from the fabric-covered options.

It includes three wooden shelves. BHG says they accommodate 10–12 small plants or five to eight large ones; actual capacity will depend on pot size and plant shape. Four wall vents and an automatic roof vent support airflow. Assembly took the tester eight to ten hours, and BHG notes that a permanent structure may need anchoring. During testing when outdoor temperatures exceeded 80°F, BHG reported that plants did not shrivel or scorch.

Best mini: Quictent Portable Mini Cloche Greenhouse
The Quictent cloche is meant to cover plants in a raised bed or pots, not to function as a walk-in greenhouse. At 71 × 36 × 36 inches, it has no shelves and uses a PVC cover over a metal frame. The tester assembled it in 20 minutes.
Four top vents and side panels let air move through the enclosure, and the tester reported no cover rips during the observed testing. Its light frame shifted in wind; it has no included ground anchors, and its ties were short. BHG advises fastening it with landscaping staples if needed, especially where it may catch wind.
Best for small yards: Ohuhu Walk-in Plant Greenhouse
The Ohuhu offers a walk-in format with 12 shelves in a 57 × 57 × 76-inch footprint. Its PE cover and alloy-steel frame assemble without tools; BHG reports setup took about 40 minutes. The tester found that it stayed dry during the test period and did not move after anchoring.

Temperature control is the key trade-off. On hot days, BHG recorded the interior at 25–40°F warmer than outside. During an unusually warm week, seedlings overheated when windows were not opened. If you choose this model, plan to monitor temperature and manage ventilation rather than assuming the cover alone will protect seedlings from heat.
Best for patios: Home-Complete 4-Tier Mini Greenhouse
For a tight patio, balcony or indoor spot, the Home-Complete occupies just 27 × 19 inches of floor space and stands 63 inches tall. The PVC-covered alloy-steel unit has four fixed shelves. BHG’s tester assembled it in 20 minutes and found it suited to indoor and outdoor use in a compact footprint.
The cover zips open to help regulate humidity and can be removed for cleaning. Because the shelves are not adjustable, consider both the height of plants you intend to grow and whether they may outgrow the available tiers.

Choose by space, plants and growing conditions
Measure the footprint and usable height
Use the product dimensions to mark out the floor area before ordering, including room to reach the doorway and tend plants. The Home-Complete is a narrow cabinet-style option; the Eagle Peak’s roughly 9.8-foot square footprint is a substantially different commitment. For taller plants, compare usable shelf spacing or interior height—not just the number of shelves.
Decide between shelves and open growing space
The Ohuhu’s 12 shelves suit a high-capacity arrangement of smaller pots, while the Home-Complete’s four fixed tiers suit a compact vertical setup. Yardistry offers three wooden shelves; BHG gives its approximate plant capacity above. Eagle Peak and Quictent include none, which leaves open space for beds or larger containers but means you must provide your own shelving if desired.
Plan for heat and ventilation
A greenhouse can heat up quickly in sun. Look at the vents, doors and windows you can open, and consider whether you can check conditions during warm spells. The Ohuhu test illustrates the risk of leaving windows shut: BHG reported interior temperatures 25–40°F above outdoors on hot days and overheated seedlings during an unusually warm week when windows were not opened. That is a report from its test period, not a universal temperature increase for every setup.

Match portability and anchoring to the site
A lightweight cloche is easy to reposition but can shift in wind, as BHG observed with the Quictent. The Eagle Peak includes metal anchors, while the Ohuhu tester reported stability after anchoring. Yardistry is a more permanent structure and may need anchoring. Consider exposure, ground conditions and the manufacturer’s installation guidance rather than assuming a greenhouse will stay put on its own.
Compare materials without assuming one is universally best
BHG lists PE covers for Eagle Peak and Ohuhu, PVC covers for Quictent and Home-Complete, and polycarbonate panels with a lumber frame for Yardistry. Those differences help identify the kind of structure and upkeep to expect, but the reported tests do not establish that one material is best for every climate, use or budget.

Build or buy a small greenhouse?
BHG’s answer is conditional: a low-cost DIY greenhouse can be assembled from reused items and scraps, but doing so takes time, skills, tools and creative thinking. A homemade structure may also fail to maintain the growing conditions you want. Compare the cost of materials with the value of your time, what tools and supplies you already have, the plants’ needs and whether you want a predictable kit or a customized project.
