Asters and goldenrods extend fall color, ornamental grasses add height and movement, Rudbeckia bridges summer and fall, and sedum suits a drier edge. Choose plants that share the site’s conditions and fit their mature sizes together.
Five companion plants to consider
These choices add different colors, textures and seasonal roles. Select the ones suited to your site rather than trying to fit all five into one bed.

1. Asters for late-season flowers
Asters bring daisy-like flowers and a lighter form alongside dense mum mounds. Many bloom from late summer until frost and attract pollinating insects, according to Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. A locally suitable New England aster cultivar is one option to investigate.

2. Goldenrods for yellow fall contrast
Goldenrod’s arching yellow sprays contrast with the rounded shape of mums and add fall color. ‘Fireworks’ is one cultivar suggested for texture and seasonal interest in Gardenia’s companion-plant guide. Goldenrod species and cultivars differ in their site needs and spread, so match the plant to the bed rather than assuming they all behave alike.

3. Ornamental grasses for height and movement
Switch grass and feather reed grass can add vertical structure and seed-head texture behind mum mounds. Check mature height and spread before planting: a grass that grows too large may crowd or shade the mums.
4. Rudbeckia ‘Goldsturm’ for a seasonal handoff
Black-eyed Susan cultivar ‘Goldsturm’ can carry flowers from summer into early fall, bridging the season before mums take center stage. It prefers full sun and moist but well-drained soil, conditions that can overlap with those preferred by garden mums.

5. Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’ for a drier edge

How to choose companions that will thrive
Check four things before choosing plants: whether their growing needs match, how their bloom seasons relate, what shapes and textures they add, and whether their mature sizes fit the space. These checks are more useful than choosing by flower color alone.

- Sun: Garden mums generally perform best in full sunshine. Avoid letting taller companions shade them.
- Drainage and moisture: Mums do best in fertile, well-drained soil. Pair plants with similar needs in the same part of the bed, and put plants such as sedum in a drier edge if conditions differ.
- Season: Asters and goldenrods extend fall color; Rudbeckia can provide an earlier seasonal handoff.
- Size and airflow: Allow for mature height and spread so plants do not crowd mum crowns or block air movement.
Virginia Cooperative Extension gives 18 to 24 inches as typical spacing for garden mums. The appropriate distance depends on the variety and whether the grower wants many smaller flowers or fewer exhibition-size blooms.

- Plant a mass of mums as the main fall display, leaving space for their mature spread.
- Add one seasonal flower companion, such as asters for late-season color or Rudbeckia for an earlier handoff.
- Place a taller ornamental grass behind the mums where it will not shade or crowd them.
- Use sedum on a drier, fast-draining edge if the bed has a suitable spot.
Do not pack every recommended plant into one bed. Crowding, shade and poorly drained soil can undermine the planting even when the companion choices are individually suitable.
Choose mums suited to your climate
“Mums” can mean different horticultural types. North Carolina State University Extension distinguishes hardy garden mums from florist-oriented types often sold for seasonal display. Iowa State Extension also cautions that florist mums often do not perform as long-term garden plants in Iowa. For a perennial planting, choose a hardy garden cultivar appropriate to your local climate rather than assuming every fall pot mum will return.

Virginia Cooperative Extension describes garden mums as typically hardy in zones 5 to 9, while noting that cold tolerance varies. Its regional guidance recommends planting in May or early June; the right planting window and winter survival depend on location and cultivar. Consult local extension guidance for your area.
