To reduce sound passing through a wall or window, you need to improve the full building assembly—typically by adding mass, separating surfaces, sealing gaps or addressing flanking paths. Foam and other lightweight absorbers can make a room sound less reverberant, but they do not by themselves stop a neighbor hearing music or traffic.
First, decide whether you need less echo or less sound transmission
Sound absorption reduces reflections within a room. It can make speech clearer or a space feel less reverberant. Sound isolation concerns sound traveling through or around a structure; transmission loss describes how much sound an assembly reduces as it passes through. These are different problems, so an absorber that improves a room’s acoustics is not automatically a barrier between rooms.

The route matters, too. Sound may travel directly through a wall, leak through a crack or perimeter gap, vibrate through connected building elements, or take an indirect flanking path. OSHA notes that absorbers do not reduce direct sound propagation, while ISO 12354-1:2017 models airborne insulation between adjacent rooms using both building elements and junctions. ISO says that edition was reviewed and confirmed in 2023. ISO 12354-1

Alternatives for reducing echo inside a room
1. Mineral-wool or fiberglass panels
For echo control, use porous, fibrous material in a suitably designed panel, often with a fabric facing. OSHA lists mineral wool and fiberglass among common sound-absorbing materials. Performance depends on factors including frequency and thickness; a material name alone does not establish how a finished panel will perform.
OSHA’s Technical Manual table, reproducing example coefficients from cited acoustics references, illustrates why comparisons need context. For 2-inch, 1.8 lb/ft³ open-cell acoustical foam, it lists absorption coefficients of 0.22 at 125 Hz, 0.35 at 250 Hz, 0.61 at 500 Hz, 0.98 at 1,000 Hz, 0.94 at 2,000 Hz and 0.99 at 4,000 Hz. For a 1/2-inch rigid fiberglass board, the corresponding examples are 0.08, 0.25, 0.74, 0.95, 0.97 and 0.99. These are table examples, not product rankings or guarantees for every panel. Panels can reduce reflections in the room where they are installed. Mineral wool or fiberglass alone should not be treated as a sound barrier in a wall; transmission control depends on the complete construction.
2. Acoustic ceiling tiles, clouds or baffles
Ceiling absorbers are useful when wall space is limited or a hard ceiling contributes to prominent reflections. OSHA describes wall and ceiling absorbers as a way to reduce reflected sound and reverberant buildup, particularly in hard-surfaced rooms. Choose placement with the room and sound source in mind: absorbers affect reflections, not the direct sound traveling from a source to a listener.

This set comprises 20 pieces measuring 11.8 X 11.8 X 0.36 inches, suitable for an area about 20 ft².
3. Heavy, draped curtains or fabric
Fabric can modestly reduce room reverberation, especially when it hangs in folds rather than flat against a surface. OSHA’s example table distinguishes light fabric in contact with a wall from heavier velour draped in half, and shows that absorption varies by frequency. The result depends on the fabric and how it is installed.
Do not treat curtains as window soundproofing. The Institute of Noise Control Engineering of the USA explains that curtains have little mass and do not enclose a window completely; sound can pass around them. INCE: Dispelling the Seven Myths of Sound Isolation

Approaches for reducing sound passing through walls or windows
4. Upgrade the wall as a mass-and-cavity assembly
When sound transmission is the problem, consider the wall as a system rather than selecting one “soundproofing” material. Construction approaches can combine added mass, separated wall leaves or a cavity, and absorptive blankets such as mineral or rock wool or fiberglass within the cavity. Resilient attachments may also reduce mechanical coupling. The result belongs to the designed or tested assembly—not to any one ingredient by itself.
FHWA’s manual gives construction examples to show the effect of assembly choices: it states that a three-inch airspace provides significant noise reduction and that widening the airspace to six inches can reduce noise by an additional 5 dBA. It also reports that resilient layers can raise STC by 2–5 dB and cavity blankets can attenuate noise by as much as 10 dB. These are FHWA manual examples, not promised results for a generic retrofit; actual performance depends on the assembly and conditions. FHWA: Highway Noise Barrier Design and Construction

5. Reduce rigid connections and seal bypass gaps
Resilient clips, channels or other resilient attachments can reduce direct mechanical coupling in a wall assembly. Seal cracks and perimeter gaps so sound does not simply bypass the upgraded surface. FHWA warns that even small openings can materially compromise insulation. Sealing helps only where leakage is part of the path; it does not replace the other elements of an effective assembly.
For a window-specific transmission problem, a secondary interior storm-window system is another assembly approach. INCE recommends spacing it from the existing pane and describes the intervening airspace as useful for low-frequency sound. Curtains alone do not create that complete, separated window assembly. INCE: Dispelling the Seven Myths of Sound Isolation
How to choose the right intervention
- If voices or music sound harsh inside the same room: start with absorbers such as panels, ceiling treatments or draped fabric; these target reflected sound.
- If sound is crossing a wall or ceiling: investigate the full construction, including mass, cavities, resilient connections, junctions and openings. Do not assume an absorber attached to the room side will stop transmission.
- If the problem is at a window: distinguish room reverberation from sound entering through the window assembly. A curtain may affect the room’s sound but is not a substitute for improving the window assembly.
- If footsteps or another vibration are the concern: consider structure-borne transmission rather than relying only on porous absorbers; the vibration path may involve connected building elements.
- When comparing performance: use data for complete, relevant assemblies. FHWA describes STC as a guide for comparing construction, while ISO 12354-1 estimates airborne insulation using element and junction data. Do not assign an assembly rating to a loose material.
Before choosing a retrofit, identify the source and likely route, then consider frequency, treated area, thickness and mass, whether installation changes the assembly, reversibility and building constraints. No single product ranking applies across rooms with different construction and noise paths.
What the evidence does—and does not—say
OSHA’s examples are useful for understanding absorption and workplace noise-control mechanisms, not as residential code approval. FHWA’s construction examples come from a U.S. highway-noise manual and should not be read as guaranteed outcomes for a home retrofit. Local building requirements also vary. For example, England’s Approved Document E is jurisdiction-specific statutory guidance covering sound insulation in dwelling-houses, flats, residential rooms and schools; it is not a rule for other countries. England Approved Document E: Resistance to Sound
