1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsStart by choosing between a temporary fort on the ground and an elevated treehouse: they have different construction demands and fall risks. These five steps help you plan a simple, age-appropriate build, use suitable materials, reduce hazards, and keep play safer. They are a planning framework—not an engineered building plan. For elevated or complex construction, consult a qualified local professional.
1. Choose the kind of fort and a safe site
A loose-branch fort built at ground level is not the same project as a fixed platform in a tree. A ground-level fort generally avoids the height-related fall exposure of a treehouse, though its materials and play area still need regular checks. An elevated structure requires careful planning for its support, access, barriers, and the landing area below.
Ground-level fort
Look for level ground away from busy roads, steep cliffs, dangerous water, and sensitive areas. Children can use branches and other loose natural materials to create temporary structures; Maryland Department of Natural Resources describes this kind of building play in its nature-play guidance. Keep the design modest and make sure the materials cannot readily fall onto children.
Elevated treehouse
Choose a location away from electrical wires and other overhead hazards. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) handbook recommends placing residential playground equipment at least six feet from structures and obstacles; apply that guidance to the play area, while recognizing the handbook is not a mandatory standard. See the CPSC Outdoor Home Playground Safety Handbook.

Nationwide Children’s Hospital advises building treehouses low and gives 10 feet as a maximum height in its treehouse safety guidance. That is a source-specific recommendation, not a universal building code or a substitute for local requirements or professional design.
2. Plan the size, materials, and adult role
Keep the design simple and suited to the children who will use it. Decide how they will get in and out before construction begins, and make adult responsibilities clear—especially for elevated structures and any work involving tools.

Choose outdoor materials and compatible fasteners
The CPSC recommends outdoor-use wood that is naturally resistant to rot and insects or treated to resist deterioration, along with corrosion-resistant hardware. Fasteners must be compatible with the wood treatment. Follow product and project instructions for the correct fastener; there is no single fastener choice suitable for every design and material.
- Gather sound, appropriate materials and remove anything sharp, broken, or visibly deteriorated.
- For a temporary ground fort, consider loose natural materials such as branches, as described by Maryland DNR.
- Plan the entrance and exit so children do not have to climb on unstable materials or use a hazardous improvised route.
- Check local building, zoning, and utility requirements before starting a fixed or elevated build.
3. Build carefully and keep the work manageable
Construction tools, materials, and collapse are identified hazards in Forestry Commission (England) guidance on self-built play structures. An adult should manage tool use and keep children clear of active work. Build only what can be made stable with the materials, skills, and support available; do not guess at spans, load limits, foundations, or tree-attachment methods.

Use fasteners recommended for the materials and project. The CPSC handbook is residential playground guidance, not a design certification, and its references to standards do not establish that a particular fort or treehouse is safe. The available guidance does not provide an engineered treehouse attachment method, tree-health assessment, or structural calculations. For elevated or complex construction, seek a qualified local professional rather than improvising those details.
4. Reduce falls, entanglement, and sharp-edge hazards
Falls are a central hazard for elevated treehouses. Height, safe access, barriers, and the landing surface all matter. Keep the platform low, keep the structure away from electrical wires, and cover or remove exposed fasteners and sharp edges. Avoid openings that could trap a child’s head or neck, and do not leave ropes or other materials arranged in loops that can entangle a child.

- BUILD TALL New plastic components allow kids to build to new heights. Includes a Tree trunk, branch, canopy pieces, ladder, and tire swing.
- OVER 80 PIECES Includes over 80 plastic and wooden pieces
Plan the landing area
Nationwide Children’s recommends at least nine inches of protective surfacing in a 72-inch zone around a treehouse. In its residential playground handbook, the CPSC recommends at least nine inches of specified loose-fill surfacing for equipment up to the heights stated in the handbook, with surfacing extending at least six feet around the structure. These are recommendations from different guidance contexts; neither measurement should be treated as universally sufficient for every design, location, or jurisdiction.
Make access and barriers part of the design
Plan a safe way to enter and leave, and provide appropriate barriers for an elevated platform. Nationwide Children’s warns against rope or chain access. Do not improvise access or barriers where a fall could cause serious injury; get qualified advice for elevated construction.

5. Inspect, maintain, and supervise
Before play, and periodically afterward, check the fort or treehouse and the surrounding area. Repair or remove hazards before children use the structure.
- Look for loose, damaged, broken, or deteriorated parts and materials.
- Check for exposed nails or fasteners, sharp edges, and openings that could trap a child’s head or neck.
- Inspect ropes and other hanging materials for deterioration or loop-forming hazards.
- Check that the access route, barriers, and protective surfacing remain in usable condition.
- Keep adult supervision appropriate to the structure and the children using it. Nationwide Children’s recommends supervision and says children younger than six should not use a treehouse unless an adult is present.
Building with loose materials can encourage creativity and basic engineering skills, but children’s involvement should be balanced with the need to manage tools, unstable materials, and fall hazards. Forestry Commission guidance notes that the privacy and independence of den-building play can matter to children; adults can preserve that play value while setting boundaries around unsafe locations and construction.
