4 Ways to Remove Red Wine Stains from Your Clothes, Carpet, and More

Blot red wine immediately, then choose a treatment based on the stained material. Here are four safe methods for clothes, linens, carpet, upholstery, and delicate fabrics.

Blot the spill immediately, do not rub, and identify the material before applying anything. For washable clothing and linens, cold water followed by liquid detergent is the safest starting point. Colored fabrics may need a bleach-free, color-safe stain remover; white bleach-safe fabric can sometimes tolerate diluted chlorine bleach. Synthetic carpet and upholstery require small amounts of solution, careful blotting, and thorough extraction.

The right method depends more on the fiber and care label than on the stain itself. Test any product in a hidden area first, keep stained clothing out of the dryer until you have inspected it, and use a professional cleaner for wool, silk, valuable rugs, structured garments, or unknown materials.

First response: contain the spill

  1. Remove excess wine. Lift away liquid with a clean white cloth or white paper towel.
  2. Blot repeatedly. Press down and lift; replace or rotate the towel as it absorbs wine. Do not scrub.
  3. Work from the outside toward the center on carpet and upholstery. This helps prevent the stain from spreading.
  4. Check the care label and identify the fiber before choosing a cleaner.
  5. Pretest the treatment. Apply a small amount to an inconspicuous seam, underside, or hidden corner and check for color loss, bleaching, or texture change.

These steps are useful whether the spill is on a shirt, tablecloth, rug, sofa, or car upholstery. Rubbing can force pigment deeper into the fibers, while too much liquid can spread a carpet stain, leave cleaner residue, or create drying and mildew problems.

1. Washable clothing and table linens: cold water and liquid detergent

This is the best first method for a fresh red-wine stain on a washable garment or table linen, provided the care label permits water washing.

What you need

  • Cold water
  • A clean white cloth or paper towel
  • liquid laundry detergent
  • A washing machine or basin suitable for the care label

Steps

  1. Blot the wine. Remove as much liquid as possible without rubbing.
  2. Rinse with cold water. Flush or rinse the stained area where the garment’s instructions permit. Avoid hot water at this stage.
  3. Apply liquid detergent directly. Gently work it into the fibers rather than scrubbing aggressively.
  4. Let it stand for about five minutes. Do not let the detergent dry on the fabric.
  5. Wash according to the care label. Use the hottest temperature the label allows, not a hotter setting chosen for convenience.
  6. Inspect before drying. If any stain remains, repeat the treatment. Do not place the item in a dryer until the mark is gone or substantially reduced, because dryer heat can set what remains.

For a small spill while away from home, a portable stain-remover pen can be useful on suitable colorfast washable or dry-cleanable clothing. Remove excess wine first, release the solution from the pen tip, and rub gently as directed by the product label. Test an inside seam if you are unsure about fabric compatibility. A pen is an emergency treatment for a fresh spot, not a substitute for proper laundering and not the preferred solution for carpet or upholstery.

2. Colored clothing: use a bleach-free, color-safe stain remover

For colored clothing, or for white garments containing spandex or another bleach-sensitive fiber, choose a bleach-free, color-safe stain remover rather than conventional chlorine bleach. A peroxide-based product marketed for colors may be appropriate for red wine and some set-in stains, but the label and the garment’s care instructions control.

Steps

  1. Blot or rinse away as much wine as possible.
  2. Test the product on an inconspicuous area and allow the test area to dry if the label recommends it.
  3. Apply the color-safe stain remover directly to the stain.
  4. Gently work it into the fibers.
  5. Allow it to sit for approximately 10 minutes, or for the exact time on the product label. Do not allow it to dry on the garment.
  6. Launder at the hottest temperature permitted by the care label.
  7. Air-dry and inspect. Repeat if necessary before using a dryer.

A color-safe stain remover is the most relevant product category for colored shirts, dresses, washable linens, and similar textiles. “Color-safe” does not mean risk-free for every dye or finish, so a hidden-area test remains important.

Important: Do not assume a laundry stain remover is suitable for a couch, carpet, car seat, or mattress. Soft surfaces may be difficult to rinse completely, and laundry products can leave residue or introduce too much moisture. Use a product specifically labeled for the surface instead.

3. White, bleach-safe fabric: diluted chlorine bleach only when allowed

Diluted chlorine bleach is a conditional option for a white textile that the care label identifies as bleach-safe. It is not a general red-wine remedy.

Never apply full-strength chlorine bleach directly to the stain as a pretreatment. It can damage fibers, cause uneven discoloration, and permanently weaken some fabrics.

Safer procedure for eligible fabric

  1. Blot and rinse the wine from the fabric.
  2. Confirm that the item is white and bleach-safe. Do not use this method on colored fabric, wool, silk, elastane-containing clothing, or any item marked non-bleachable.
  3. Dilute the bleach exactly as directed by the bleach manufacturer’s instructions.
  4. Use the diluted solution as directed, then machine-wash with detergent and bleach at the hottest temperature permitted by the care label.
  5. Air-dry the garment first and inspect it in good light.
  6. Repeat only if the care label and product instructions permit it. Use the dryer only after the stain has been removed as far as possible.

When the fabric content is unclear, skip chlorine bleach. The risk of permanent damage is greater than the benefit of trying an aggressive treatment on an unidentified textile.

4. Synthetic carpet and upholstery: blot, lightly rinse, then extract

For synthetic carpet, a fabric sofa, or other soft surface whose label permits water-based cleaning, the objective is to remove both the wine and the cleaning solution without saturating the backing or cushion.

Steps for carpet and upholstery

  1. Blot immediately. Use a clean white towel and continue until little additional wine transfers.
  2. Apply only a small amount of club soda or clean water. Blot again. Do not pour enough liquid to soak the carpet pad or upholstery cushion.
  3. Use a surface-appropriate cleaner. Select a carpet or upholstery spot cleaner whose label matches the material. Test it in a hidden location first.
  4. Blot from the outside inward. Use a clean, damp white cloth to lift the diluted stain and avoid spreading it.
  5. Rinse away residue. Use the smallest amount of clean water needed, then blot or extract it thoroughly.
  6. Dry completely. Improve airflow and avoid replacing cushions, rugs, or furniture until the treated area is dry.

A carpet and upholstery spot cleaner is more appropriate than a laundry product for these surfaces. For recurring spills or a larger synthetic-carpet stain, a portable carpet and upholstery extractor can help remove diluted cleaner and moisture, but it is optional. Follow the machine’s instructions and do not assume steam or extraction is safe for every fiber, backing, dye, or piece of furniture.

Over-wetting is a common failure mode. Excess water can spread the stain, soak the cushion or carpet pad, prolong drying, and contribute to odor or mildew. Cleaner left behind can also attract soil and leave a noticeable ring.

Wool, silk, expensive items, and unknown fibers need extra caution

Do not treat every textile like cotton or synthetic polyester. Wool, silk, antique textiles, valuable rugs, structured clothing, and unidentified fibers can react unpredictably to water, alcohol, bleach, friction, or household cleaners.

Wool clothing and washable wool textiles

Woolmark recommends rinsing away as much of the wine as possible with clean water, then applying a dilute Woolmark-approved detergent solution in tepid water. Its guidance also describes a carefully diluted rubbing-alcohol treatment if the stain persists. That procedure should not be generalized to every wool item: dyes, finishes, construction, and care labels differ.

If you choose a wool-approved detergent, follow the garment label and the detergent’s dilution and rinsing directions exactly. Avoid hot water, aggressive rubbing, and twisting, all of which can contribute to shrinkage, felting, distortion, or color damage.

When to stop DIY treatment

  • Wool carpet or a valuable natural-fiber rug
  • Silk, velvet, leather, or a structured or lined garment
  • An antique, heirloom, or expensive textile
  • A fabric with no readable care label
  • A stain that has spread into padding, backing, or upholstery foam
  • A stain that remains after careful, label-approved treatment

For these cases, use a qualified specialty garment cleaner or professional carpet and upholstery cleaner. Tell the cleaner what caused the stain and which products, if any, have already been applied. That information can affect the treatment plan.

What not to do

  • Do not rub hard. Blotting lifts liquid; scrubbing can spread it and drive it into fibers.
  • Do not use the dryer too soon. Heat can set the remaining stain and make later removal more difficult.
  • Do not apply full-strength chlorine bleach. Dilute it only when the fabric and product directions expressly permit bleaching.
  • Do not skip a hidden-area test. Dyes, finishes, carpet fibers, and upholstery fabrics can respond differently even when they look similar.
  • Do not flood carpet or upholstery. Use small amounts and extract or blot away moisture and residue.
  • Do not use laundry products automatically on soft surfaces. They may be difficult to rinse and can leave soil-attracting residue.
  • Do not expect one treatment to guarantee removal. Older, dried, or heat-set stains may require repetition or professional equipment.

Choosing a product without making the stain worse

For clothing and linens, look for a red wine stain remover or bleach-free color-safe stain remover that explicitly covers the fabric type and stain. For a fresh spot away from home, a portable stain-remover pen is convenient, but check the label for washable or dry-cleanable fabric restrictions.

For carpet and upholstery, choose a cleaner specifically labeled for the surface and fiber. A portable extractor is useful for repeated household spills, but it is not required for a single small stain and is not automatically suitable for wool, silk, delicate upholstery, or every carpet construction.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does club soda remove red wine stains?

A small amount of club soda can help dilute a fresh spill on some synthetic carpet and upholstery, but it is not a guaranteed remover. Blot first, apply very little, and follow with a surface-appropriate cleaner and thorough blotting or extraction.

Can I use hydrogen peroxide on colored clothes?

Use only a commercial bleach-free, color-safe product whose label is suitable for the garment. Test for colorfastness first, follow the stated contact time, and do not substitute an unlabeled household mixture.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I use salt on a red-wine stain?

Salt is not the primary method supported by the guidance here. Blotting, appropriate rinsing, a material-specific cleaner, and careful washing or extraction give you better control over moisture and residue.

Can red-wine stains be removed after drying?

Sometimes, but dried or heat-set stains are harder to remove and may require repeated label-approved treatments or professional cleaning. Do not apply more heat until you have inspected the result.

The Bottom Line

Blot first, match the treatment to the material, pretest the product, and keep heat away until the stain is gone. Cold water and detergent suit many washable fabrics; color-safe stain remover is safer for colored clothing; diluted bleach is reserved for white bleach-safe textiles; and carpet or upholstery needs controlled moisture plus thorough extraction. When the item is valuable, delicate, wool, silk, or unidentified, professional cleaning is the safer choice.
