You can manage weeds without Roundup by pulling or cultivating them early, suppressing new growth with mulch, using landscape fabric selectively, or choosing a labeled contact treatment carefully. The right choice depends on the weed, where it is growing, and whether it is an annual or an established perennial. “Roundup” is a brand name, not a single weed-control method; focus on the target weed and the site rather than assuming one substitute works everywhere.
1. Pull or cultivate weeds before they set seed
For most annual weeds, hand pulling or shallow cultivation is most effective while plants are small and before they produce seed. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach recommends these approaches for annual weeds and advises clearing existing weeds before mulching (Organic Methods for Weed Control).
Pull carefully enough to remove the plant, then check the area for regrowth. Established perennial weeds may return if roots or other regenerative parts remain, so monitor and remove new growth rather than assuming a single pass has solved the problem. A hand weeding tool can provide leverage or help reach roots where appropriate; it is optional, and the tool alone does not ensure complete removal.
2. Suppress weeds in beds with mulch
After removing existing weeds, spread organic mulch such as straw, leaves, shredded bark, or grass clippings in garden beds. Oregon State University Extension Service says a 3–4 inch layer can help smother many weeds (Is vinegar effective for killing weeds?). Mulch blocks or limits new growth, but it is suppression rather than a guarantee that weeds will not return; results depend on the site and weed pressure.

Choose mulch that suits the plants and bed, and keep an eye out for weeds that emerge through it or take hold on top. Mulch is particularly useful as part of prevention after hand weeding, not as a substitute for clearing established growth first. University of Maryland Extension and University of Florida IFAS Extension also discuss mulch as a weed-management option (Glyphosate (Roundup®) Information and Alternatives for Weed Management; Improving Weed Control in Landscape Planting Beds).
3. Consider landscape fabric only where it fits
Landscape fabric can suppress weeds in some planting areas, but it is not a permanent weed-proof barrier. University of Florida IFAS Extension notes that weeds can eventually grow on top of or through fabric, where they may be harder to pull. Fabric can also complicate installation in mature landscapes and affect ornamentals. Weigh those installation and maintenance tradeoffs before using it, especially around established plants (Improving Weed Control in Landscape Planting Beds).

4. Treat vinegar and other sprays cautiously
Vinegar containing acetic acid acts as a contact herbicide: it injures foliage it touches but does not move through the plant to kill roots. That makes it a poor choice for many established perennial weeds, which can regrow. University of Maryland Extension’s Home and Garden Information Center explains this limitation and warns that horticultural-strength vinegar is caustic and poses a handling risk (Using vinegar to kill weeds/invasives).
Do not treat vinegar as harmless simply because it may be described as an organic option, and do not rely on a homemade concentration as a universally safe or effective recipe. If using any herbicide, select a product whose label covers both the target weed and the place you intend to apply it, then follow that label’s directions. University of Maryland Extension discusses mulch, weed barriers, and labeled herbicide use as options that depend on the situation (Glyphosate (Roundup®) Information and Alternatives for Weed Management).

Choose by weed and location
| Method | Best fit | Main tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Hand pulling or shallow cultivation | Small annual weeds, especially before seed production | Labor-intensive; perennial weeds may regrow if enough of the plant remains |
| Organic mulch | Garden beds after existing weeds have been cleared | Suppresses rather than guarantees prevention; weeds may emerge through or on top of mulch |
| Landscape fabric | Some planting areas where the installation and maintenance fit the landscape | Weeds can grow on or through it; it can complicate work around mature landscapes and ornamentals |
| Vinegar or another contact spray | Situations where contacting foliage is suitable and the product is appropriate for the site | Vinegar injures foliage without killing roots; concentrated horticultural vinegar requires caution |
For cracks or other hardscape, beds, and lawns, the setting matters as much as the method: protect desirable plants and use a spray only when its label permits that target and location. For recurring weeds, identify whether the plant is an annual or perennial and combine timely removal with prevention, such as mulch and sanitation. Ask Extension guidance on home-use vinegar also emphasizes prevention through mulch and sanitation (Is home use vinegar effective as a weed killer).
