Grow lemongrass in a roomy, well-draining pot, give it warmth and sun, keep the soil evenly moist, and move it indoors before cold weather. Harvest only part of the clump at a time so the plant can keep growing.
1. Choose a roomy pot with drainage
Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) grows in containers, but a cramped pot limits the space available for new shoots. Choose a sturdy planter with drainage holes and enough room for the clump to spread. The National Parks Board of Singapore recommends a pot at least 20 cm wide and at least 15 cm of sandy soil depth; these are practical starting points, not a guarantee of mature plant size. National Parks Board guidance.
Use a container growing mix that drains well, and make sure excess water can escape rather than collect in the pot or saucer. If you will bring the plant indoors seasonally, consider the planter’s weight as well as its size.
2. Give it warmth, sun, and steady moisture
Set the pot in a warm, sunny spot. Lemongrass prefers full sun but can tolerate some light shade. Water often enough to keep the potting mix moist, checking it more frequently during hot or windy weather when containers dry faster. Avoid waterlogging: standing water and overly wet mix can contribute to root rot. Illinois Extension and Utah State University Extension offer regional growing guidance.

There is no universal watering calendar for every pot and climate. Check the mix itself and adjust to local conditions. During active warm-season growth, fertilizer is optional; if you use it, follow the product label rather than applying a fixed schedule.
3. Move the pot indoors before cold weather
Lemongrass is a tender perennial in warm climates and is often grown as an annual where winters are cold. As temperatures cool, bring a container plant indoors before frost. Place it in the brightest suitable indoor location; growth may slow during winter. Guidance from Illinois Extension and Utah State University Extension supports moving container plants indoors as cold weather approaches. The precise timing depends on local weather.

4. Harvest modestly and divide crowded clumps
For cooking, use the tender lower portions of the stems; leaves can also be harvested as desired. Cut or pull stems from the outside of the clump, and avoid taking more than one-third at a time so the plant retains plenty of growth. Sonoma County Master Gardeners also recommend dividing older, root-bound clumps to make new plants. Wear gloves when handling mature leaves because their edges can be sharp. A nursery plant or a clean division is a straightforward, lower-risk way to begin. Some extension guidance describes rooting fresh grocery-store stalks, but the Royal Horticultural Society cautions that supermarket stems can carry disease risk. Treat stalk rooting as a less certain option rather than a guaranteed method.
