4 Plants Commonly Linked to Epsom Salt—and When to Use It

Tomatoes, peppers, roses, and azaleas are commonly associated with Epsom salt, but none automatically needs it. A soil test should guide whether to add magnesium.

Tomatoes, peppers, roses, and azaleas are four plants often mentioned in advice about Epsom salt. But none automatically needs it: Epsom salt supplies magnesium and sulfur, and adding it without a confirmed need can cause problems. A soil test—not a plant’s place on a popular list—is the best guide.

What Epsom salt does for plants

Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate, a soluble source of the plant nutrients magnesium and sulfur. Magnesium is essential, but that does not mean every garden needs more of it. Nebraska Extension says magnesium is rarely needed in Nebraska soils, while noting that deficiency can occur in highly acidic soils, including those common in parts of the eastern United States. Local soil conditions matter.

North Carolina Cooperative Extension names roses, tomatoes, peppers, azaleas, and rhododendrons as plants commonly associated with Epsom salt. That is a list of examples gardeners hear about, not proof that all five—or any particular plant—will benefit from an application.

Four plants often discussed with Epsom salt

Tomatoes

Tomatoes are often named in Epsom salt advice. Yellow tissue between the veins of older leaves can be consistent with magnesium deficiency, but it is not a diagnosis: shading and low nitrogen or potassium can also cause yellowing, according to Mississippi State University Extension. Do not treat a symptom alone as proof that magnesium is missing.

Epsom salt is not a cure for blossom-end rot. Washington State University Extension says blossom-end rot is not related to magnesium deficiency.

Peppers

Peppers are commonly mentioned alongside tomatoes, but the fact that a plant is on that list does not establish a need for supplemental magnesium. Check the soil and follow the resulting recommendation rather than applying it as routine care.

Roses

Roses are another familiar example. UC Agriculture and Natural Resources advises against concentrated mineral supplements without confirmed need. Leimone Waite, Master Gardener, wrote in a May 24, 2019 article: “However, it’s not a good idea to add any concentrated mineral supplements to your soil without having it tested for deficiencies.”

Azaleas

Azaleas, along with rhododendrons, appear on North Carolina Cooperative Extension’s list of plants commonly linked to Epsom salt. Their inclusion does not mean every azalea needs added magnesium; use the soil test and local recommendations to decide.

How to tell whether a plant needs magnesium

Start with a soil test. Clemson Cooperative Extension describes testing through an accredited state soil or agricultural laboratory as the most accurate way to assess magnesium and get fertilizer recommendations. Follow the lab’s recommendation and the product directions, not a generic recipe.

  1. Test the soil. Use an accredited state soil or agricultural laboratory and request recommendations for the plants and garden area in question.
  2. Compare symptoms with the test. Older tomato leaves with yellow tissue between the veins can fit magnesium deficiency, but other causes are possible. A visual symptom by itself cannot confirm the diagnosis.
  3. Apply only if recommended. Use the amount and method specified by the soil-test recommendation and product label; do not transfer rates from specialized production advice to a home garden.

Mississippi State University Extension discusses a foliar rate in a tomato-troubleshooting context, while UMass Amherst’s May 1, 2026 guidance concerns greenhouse tomato production. Neither is a general recipe for garden tomatoes or the other plants listed here.

Why more Epsom salt can be harmful

Unneeded application is not harmless. Clemson Cooperative Extension warns that salt can accumulate near roots and hinder water uptake; UF/IFAS Extension warns that excess magnesium can interfere with the uptake of other nutrients. Washington State University Extension’s guidance is concise: “Unless magnesium is deficient, don’t add Epsom salt.”

Epsom salt also does not replace nitrogen, phosphorus, or potassium, the primary nutrients in common fertilizer recommendations. Illinois Extension says adding it to soil does not control slugs, either.

Bottom line for gardeners

Tomatoes, peppers, roses, and azaleas are commonly discussed in connection with Epsom salt, but the plant name alone is not a reason to use it. Test first, account for local soil conditions, and add magnesium only when a test or a qualified diagnosis supports it.
