The DIY stink bug trap with the best comparative evidence is a reflective aluminum roasting pan filled with soapy water and illuminated by a lamp. Virginia Tech’s home study found this design more efficacious than the other indoor light traps it tested. It can reduce the number of brown marmorated stink bugs already inside—but no homemade trap eliminates an infestation or prevents new bugs from entering. For that, pair trapping with screen repair and exclusion.
Yes—but the traps work as indoor removal tools, not as a cure for an infestation. The best-supported DIY design is a reflective aluminum-foil roasting pan filled with soapy water and illuminated by a lamp. In a Virginia Tech comparison of several indoor light-trap designs assembled and tested by citizen scientists in Virginia homes, that configuration was the most efficacious.
Most “stink bugs” found overwintering in houses are brown marmorated stink bugs (Halyomorpha halys), or BMSB. They are an agricultural pest outdoors but usually an odorous nuisance indoors: they do not bite people or pets, and they do not damage the building. A trap can catch bugs that are already inside or drawn to the setup. It will not seal the openings they used to enter.

What you need
- A wide disposable aluminum or foil roasting pan
- Water
- A few drops of dish soap
- A desk lamp or another stable, suitable light source
If you are buying supplies, a foil roasting pan is the central component of this design. The recommendation is for the pan configuration—not for any particular brand, which was not tested in the Virginia Tech comparison. This article may contain affiliate links.
How to build it
- Put enough water in the pan to create a broad, substantial catch basin.
- Add a few drops of dish soap. The soap reduces the water’s surface tension, making it harder for insects to remain on the surface and escape.
- Place the pan in a dark room where stink bugs are active.
- Direct the lamp into or immediately above the reflective pan. The trap light should be the dominant light source in the room.
- Leave the setup in place while the bugs are active, checking the water level and emptying and resetting the trap as needed.
The reflective pan and light provide the attraction; the soapy water provides the capture mechanism. A wide roasting pan is preferable to a narrow bowl because it gives the insects a larger target and a more substantial water surface.

Why this one comes first
The Virginia Tech home study compared multiple indoor light-trap designs and found the aluminum-foil water-pan design to be the most efficacious of those tested. That is the strongest evidence behind calling one of these DIY traps “the best.” It does not mean the trap will perform identically in every house or eliminate every stink bug.
The study examined indoor overwintering BMSB in Virginia homes during late winter and early spring. Results can vary with the species present, the room layout, competing light sources, temperature, and how many bugs are already inside.
Safety
Keep electrical equipment well away from the water and place the lamp on a stable, cool-running setup. Do not balance a lamp over the pan where it could fall in, and do not put the trap where children, pets, curtains, paper, or other combustible materials can disturb it.
2. Deep bowl or pie-pan light trap: the easiest substitute
If you do not have a roasting pan, a deep bowl or pie pan can use the same light-and-soapy-water principle. Extension guidance from Indiana, Kentucky, Utah, and other programs describes this as a practical way to attract and drown indoor stink bugs.
Rank #2
- FULL SIZE 20.5 x 12.5 x 2.75 IN: Each pack holds 2 Glad full size deep steam table pans in aluminum foil, 20.5 x 12.5 x 2.75 inches each. A roomy large aluminum pan for big batches, holiday sides, potlucks, and buffet-style serving.
- FITS 2 HALF SIZE PANS: Each full size pan perfectly fits 2 Glad Half Size Deep Steam Table Pans, so you can combine full and half size pans for buffet lines, catered events, potlucks, and family gatherings of any size.
- HEAVY DUTY ALUMINUM FOIL: Sturdy silver foil pans with ribbed sides and an embossed pattern on the bottom, made to hold heavier dishes like lasagna, mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, and saucy casseroles for transport.
- BAKE, ROAST, AND REHEAT: Use these disposable aluminum pans for baking, roasting, reheating, and steaming vegetables or casseroles, then toss them for easy cleanup with no scrubbing, ideal when cooking several dishes at once.
- TRANSPORT AND STORE FOOD: Carry dishes to potlucks and parties, then cover with foil to store leftovers in the fridge or freezer. Stackable pans keep meal prep and make-ahead cooking simple and cut down on post-party cleanup.
What you need
- A deep bowl or pie pan
- Water
- A few drops of dish soap
- A desk lamp
Setup
- Fill the container with soapy water.
- Put it directly beneath or immediately in front of the lamp.
- Turn off other lights in the room so the trap is visually prominent.
- Position it near the wall, window, ceiling area, or other location where stink bugs are gathering.
- Check it regularly, replace evaporated or contaminated water, and dispose of the contents safely.
A deep container is better than a very shallow dish. Stink bugs are relatively large insects, and a shallow flea-trap-style dish may provide too little depth for reliable capture. This substitute is convenient and inexpensive, but there is no basis for claiming that it outperforms the reflective foil-pan design. The comparative evidence favors the aluminum pan.
3. Two-liter-bottle funnel trap with an internal light
The bottle trap is useful when you want a no-water design or need a contained setup for capturing a specimen. It uses a light to attract the insect and a funnel-shaped bottle opening to make escape more difficult.
What you need
- A clear two-liter plastic bottle
- A small battery-powered light
- Tape
- A cutting tool
A battery-powered LED light is a sensible choice for this configuration because it avoids placing a mains-powered electrical device near water. The exact light is not a tested component, so choose one that is stable, enclosed, and appropriate for unattended use. This article may contain affiliate links.
How to make it
- Cut the bottle so it has an upper section and a lower section.
- Put the small battery-powered light in the lower section.
- Turn the upper section upside down and insert its neck into the lower section, forming a funnel.
- Tape the two sections together securely.
- Add strips of tape on the inside as a rough “bug ladder,” following the type of arrangement described in official Australian biosecurity instructions.
- Place the illuminated trap in a dark location at night, near—but not touching—areas where stink bugs are active.
Unlike the water-pan designs, this is a capture trap rather than a drowning trap. The insect must still be disposed of. If you captured a suspected brown marmorated stink bug for identification or reporting, freeze the specimen before removing it from the trap. Do not release suspected invasive BMSB outdoors. Freezing or drowning is preferable to live release.
This bottle design has less comparative evidence than the Virginia Tech foil-pan trap. Treat it as a useful alternative, not as an equal scientific winner.
4. UV light with a glue board
A UV or insect light paired with an adhesive glue board can be practical in an attic, enclosed porch, garage, or utility space where a pan of water could spill. Kentucky Extension reports that glue-board light traps can be useful in areas such as attics, and Cornell integrated pest management guidance says a light trap employing a glue board may reduce indoor numbers in some situations.
How to use it
- Choose a UV or insect light designed to work with a glue board or adhesive capture sheet.
- Install the appropriately sized board according to the device instructions.
- Place the unit near the area where stink bugs gather, while keeping it away from curtains, paper, insulation, and other combustible materials.
- Follow the product’s electrical, clearance, and replacement instructions.
- Replace the adhesive board when it is full, dusty, or no longer tacky.
A UV glue board insect trap is best treated as a reduction tool for spaces where water is impractical—not as a whole-home solution. This article may contain affiliate links.
Important limitations
Cornell notes that heat from some light units can cause stink bugs to release more odor when they are stressed. For that reason, avoid putting one in a bedroom or another occupied space if odor would be a problem. Keep the unit away from children and pets, and prevent contact with the adhesive and electrical components.

What these traps can—and cannot—do
Indoor light traps attract and remove stink bugs that are already in the building or close enough to respond to the light. They are useful for reducing the number of visible insects. They do not:
- Seal cracks or repair damaged screens
- Stop more bugs from entering through the exterior
- Guarantee removal of insects hidden in wall voids, attics, or other inaccessible areas
- Eliminate an outdoor population
- Protect garden crops reliably when used as a general-purpose outdoor trap
The Environmental Protection Agency specifically describes a metal pan filled with soapy water and a light as an attraction method, while noting that additional tactics are needed for complete control. The realistic goal is capture and population reduction, followed by exclusion.
Do pheromone traps work outdoors?
Commercial aggregation-pheromone traps can help confirm whether BMSB is present and indicate when populations are increasing. They are primarily monitoring tools, not guaranteed crop-protection devices.
There is an additional concern in gardens: research summarized by UC Integrated Pest Management found that placing a pheromone trap near garden rows could increase nearby stink bugs and crop damage through a possible spillover effect. Utah State guidance likewise states that mass trapping has not been shown to be an effective control option and recommends using pheromone traps to estimate population levels and guide management decisions.
Do not assume that hanging a pheromone trap beside valuable plants will automatically pull bugs away from the crop. Use it for monitoring and make control decisions based on the local recommendations for your crop and region.

Do not crush stink bugs on walls, window sills, or floors. Disturbing or squashing them can release the characteristic unpleasant odor.

Use a container and a piece of stiff paper to capture the insect without crushing it, then freeze or drown it rather than releasing it outdoors. This is especially important for suspected BMSB in areas where it may be invasive.
For several bugs
Vacuuming is a practical removal method, but the vacuum itself may retain the odor. A dedicated handheld vacuum for stink bugs or shop vacuum can be kept for this task. Empty the canister or bag promptly outdoors, or use a disposal method recommended by local extension guidance. Freezing or drowning captured insects helps prevent escape and avoids releasing them alive. This article may contain affiliate links.
For a water-pan trap
Wear gloves if preferred, avoid splashing, and empty the contents in a way that prevents live insects from escaping. Refresh the pan with clean water and a few drops of dish soap before resetting it.
Common ideas that are easy to overpromise
- Essential oils and dryer sheets: They may be discussed as household repellents, but the reviewed extension guidance does not establish them as reliable solutions for a typical indoor infestation.
- Dish-soap sprays: Soapy water is useful inside a trap because it helps drown captured insects. That does not make spraying household surfaces a proven whole-home control method.
- Indoor insecticide sprays: Indoor applications are generally discouraged or described as ineffective for typical stink bug infestations. They do not solve the entry problem and can create unnecessary exposure or residue.
- Outdoor pheromone trapping: It can help monitor BMSB, but it is not a guaranteed way to protect crops and may increase nearby activity in some garden situations.
When DIY trapping is not enough
Consider professional help when bugs repeatedly enter despite careful screen repair and sealing, when large exterior aggregations are forming, or when access points are high, unsafe, or connected with complex construction details. A licensed pest-control provider can assess the exterior and recommend a treatment or exclusion plan appropriate to your location. Traps should still be viewed as supplemental removal—not a substitute for correcting the building envelope.
Bottom line
Start with the reflective foil roasting-pan trap: soapy water in a wide aluminum pan, illuminated in an otherwise dark room. It has the best comparative support among the DIY indoor designs covered here. A deep bowl or pie pan is the simplest substitute; a lighted bottle funnel avoids the water basin; and a UV glue-board unit is most practical in spaces such as attics or garages.
Whichever trap you use, set realistic expectations. Capture the bugs without crushing them, dispose of them safely, and spend your long-term effort on screens, weather stripping, caulk, vents, and utility openings. That combination addresses both the insects inside today and the route they use to return.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the most effective homemade stink bug trap?
The reflective foil roasting-pan trap has the strongest comparative support. In a Virginia Tech comparison of indoor light-trap designs tested in Virginia homes, it was the most efficacious design. A wide pan of soapy water illuminated in a dark room is the recommended starting point.
Will a bowl-and-lamp stink bug trap work?
Yes, a deep bowl or pie pan can work with soapy water and a lamp using the same basic principle. It is a convenient substitute, but the available comparative evidence favors the reflective aluminum-pan design.

Do DIY stink bug traps get rid of an infestation?
No. These traps capture bugs that are already inside or attracted to the setup. They do not seal entry points or eliminate outdoor populations. Repair screens and seal gaps around windows, doors, vents, utilities, and air-conditioning equipment for longer-term control.
How do I dispose of stink bugs without making them smell?
Avoid crushing them because they can release an unpleasant odor. Capture them carefully, then freeze or drown them rather than releasing suspected brown marmorated stink bugs outdoors. If you vacuum them, empty the vacuum promptly outdoors or use a dedicated vacuum to limit retained odor.
Do outdoor pheromone traps protect a garden?
Pheromone traps can help monitor whether brown marmorated stink bugs are present and when populations rise, but they are not guaranteed crop-protection devices. In some garden situations, a nearby pheromone trap may increase stink bug activity and damage.
The Bottom Line
The foil-pan light trap is the best-supported DIY option for indoor stink bugs, but exclusion is what prevents the next invasion. Use traps to reduce the insects already inside, dispose of them without crushing or releasing them, and seal the building’s entry points.
