The best-supported choice for an outdoor fixture where insects gather is a yellow- or amber-filtered LED bulb—not a promise that the light will repel every bug. Use a bulb that fits the fixture and is rated for its exposure, and switch it off when it is not needed. Here are four useful lighting approaches, with the limits of the evidence made clear.
What makes an outdoor light attract fewer insects?
Insects respond differently to different wavelengths, and results depend on the species and setting. A UCLA account of research conducted in the Amazon basin reports that yellow- or amber-filtered LEDs attracted fewer flying insects than blue and ultraviolet lighting in that study. It does not establish a universal household result or show that a bulb controls mosquitoes. Read UCLA’s account of the study.

A separate 2016 field study compared four domestic light sources. Its tested LEDs attracted significantly fewer insects than the other tested sources, but the researchers found no significant difference between their cool-white and warm-white LED treatments. That distinction matters: an ordinary warm-white bulb is not necessarily the same as a bulb with a yellow or amber filter. See the 2016 field study.

Four outdoor lighting options to consider
1. Yellow-filtered LED replacement bulb
This is the most directly supported starting point when an existing outdoor fixture is otherwise suitable. Look for an LED explicitly described as yellow-filtered or a bug light, rather than relying only on a “warm white” label. Confirm the bulb’s base, shape, brightness, and outdoor or wet-location rating against the fixture and its location.
2. Amber-filtered LED replacement bulb
An amber-filtered LED is another sensible choice for a fixture where insects congregate. UCLA’s study account groups yellow- and amber-filtered LEDs among the options that attracted fewer flying insects than blue and ultraviolet light in the study setting. That finding is not a guarantee for every insect or property.

3. Warm-white LED, when matching the fixture matters
A warm-white LED may be preferable for appearance or compatibility, but do not assume its color label means it will attract fewer insects than a cool-white LED. In the 2016 field study, the tested warm-white and cool-white LEDs did not differ significantly in insect attraction. The result concerns those lamps and conditions, not every product sold under those labels.

4. Outdoor light with a motion sensor or control
A motion-sensor fixture or control can reduce the time a light runs when nobody needs it. This is a way to limit unnecessary lighting, not a change to the bulb’s spectrum and not proof that the light itself attracts fewer insects while it is on. How to choose a replacement without creating a fixture problem
- Match the fixture: Check the base and bulb shape, and use a bulb suitable for the fixture’s stated limits.
- Check the exposure rating: Choose a bulb and fixture combination rated for the actual outdoor conditions, including wet exposure where applicable. A bulb that physically fits may still be unsuitable for the location.
- Choose the spectrum intentionally: Prefer an explicit yellow or amber filter if reducing attraction is the goal. “Warm white” alone does not establish that the bulb has a yellow filter or a particular spectrum.
- Use only the light needed: Consider a lower intensity, a control, or a shorter operating schedule rather than leaving outdoor lights on continuously.
UNH Extension advises checking whether lighting is rated for wet environments and cautions that yellow lighting is not a cure-all. No evidence here establishes a household percentage reduction in insect attraction, and none supports saying these bulbs repel all bugs or reliably control mosquitoes. The UCLA account’s comparison is specific to its Amazon-basin study, while the 2016 domestic-light experiment applies to the lamps and field conditions it tested.

A bug zapper is not an equivalent substitute for an insect-friendlier light. UCLA’s account cautions that zappers can attract insects, kill beneficial species, and draw pests closer. A proposed Department of Energy technical definition describes a bug lamp by radiant-power peaks above 550 nm; that terminology is not an effectiveness statistic or a current product certification.
