If those routes do not work, contact an authorized locksmith or safe technician. There is no universal method for recovering a forgotten combination, and resetting a lock generally requires knowing its current combination.
First, identify the lock and what you know
Before trying a recovery route, note the lock’s make, model and serial number, if present. Check whether it is a padlock, locker lock or safe lock, whether you still have its original packaging, and whether it is attached to anything. Manufacturers provide model-specific guidance; instructions for dialing a known combination are not ways to discover a lost one.

1. Check the original packaging and saved records
If the lock is factory-new, look for its instruction sheet and any purchase or registration records. For example, Master Lock’s instructions for the 1590D Precision Dial Combination Lock say its preset combination is on the instruction sheet attached to the packaging. That applies to the specified model; it is not a universal default for used locks.
Also check any secure place where you may have saved the combination. If you find a code, follow the instructions for the exact lock model to enter it.

2. Ask the manufacturer about combination recovery
Use the manufacturer’s official support guidance for the exact lock type. Master Lock’s lost-combination guidance describes recovery options for eligible products, including retailer assistance and direct submission routes. Its process may require the lock’s serial number and proof of ownership. For the documented recovery routes, the lock must not be attached to anything.
Master Lock says its mail-in form process may take approximately 4–6 weeks. That is the manufacturer’s estimate in its published guidance, not a guaranteed turnaround. Confirm current requirements and timing with the manufacturer before sending anything.

For a safe, use the dedicated safe support guidance to identify the model and serial number and ask about recovery. The published dialing sequence for a known three-digit combination explains how to operate the dial; it does not reveal a forgotten code.
3. Contact an authorized locksmith or safe technician
If the manufacturer’s owner-verification process is unavailable or does not resolve the lockout, contact a local locksmith or safe technician. Ask what proof of ownership they require, whether they service that lock type, and what options are available before authorizing work. Master Lock also directs customers to a locksmith when a key code is unavailable.

Some set-your-own combination padlocks cannot be reset without their current combination, and replacement may be necessary. A replacement lock will not open the original; it is an option only if recovery is not possible and you can lawfully remove or otherwise resolve the existing lock.

A reset changes a combination on a lock you can already open; it does not generally recover a combination you have forgotten. Master Lock says its cited set-your-own combination locks require the current combination to reset. Its model-specific reset directions begin by opening the lock with the previous combination. What to do before seeking help
- Record the brand, model and serial number, and take clear photos of the lock.
- Keep purchase records or other ownership evidence available.
- Tell the manufacturer or service provider whether the lock is attached to property.
- Use only instructions for the exact model; a sequence for entering a known code will not uncover a forgotten one.
