2nd-Gen Google Nest Hub Got Fuchsia OS in 2023: What Changed

Google’s second-generation Nest Hub switched to Fuchsia OS in 2023, but the update was intentionally subtle. Here’s how to verify it and what it means in 2026.

Yes—the second-generation Google Nest Hub received Fuchsia OS. Google began the migration in May 2023, first for Preview Program devices and then for stable-channel units in late May and early June. It was an underlying operating-system change, not a dramatic redesign: the interface stayed largely familiar, with a Bluetooth menu among the clearest reported user-facing changes.

What happened to the 2nd-gen Nest Hub?

Google moved the second-generation Nest Hub from its previous software platform to Fuchsia OS, Google’s operating system. Fuchsia is separate from Android, the Google Home mobile app and Cast firmware. The change replaced the device’s underlying operating system rather than simply installing a routine app or interface update.

The rollout followed Google’s earlier migration of the original Nest Hub and Nest Hub Max. For owners, however, Google designed the transition to be deliberately low-impact. The familiar home controls, timers, alarms, media playback, calendar functions, Google Photos and smart-home features were not replaced with a new visual experience.

Google’s 2023 rollout report said installation could take about 10 minutes, during which the display might show the Google “G” logo and a progress bar. Preview Program devices received the update first, followed by the wider stable rollout in late May and early June.

9to5Google’s rollout report identified Fuchsia version 10.20221207.2.100038 and Cast firmware 1.68.356352 in the 2023 update. Those numbers describe different software components and should not be treated as interchangeable.

What changed—and what did not?

The main visible change was Bluetooth access

The most noticeable reported change was a dedicated Bluetooth menu in Settings, making Bluetooth pairing easier without relying as heavily on the Google Home companion app.

It was not a major redesign

The update did not turn the Nest Hub into a new product. The display, interaction model and normal Google Home experience remained substantially the same. Fuchsia’s importance is primarily architectural: it gives Google a different platform for maintaining and developing hub software.

The available evidence does not establish that Fuchsia made every second-generation Nest Hub dramatically faster, improved performance by a measured amount or added a specific package of new consumer features. It also does not show that Fuchsia automatically brings Gemini to the device. Fuchsia is an operating system; assistant and AI features are separate software layers whose availability can depend on device, region, account and rollout.

How to check whether your Nest Hub runs Fuchsia

  1. On the Nest Hub screen, open Settings.
  2. Select Device information.
  3. Open Technical information.
  4. Look for Fuchsia Version.

Photograph or record the displayed version if you are troubleshooting or contacting Google support. Version numbers can vary by date, rollout channel and region.

Do not confuse the Fuchsia version with Cast firmware. The device can display both, but they identify different parts of its software stack. Likewise, a Google Home app version on your phone is not the Nest Hub’s operating-system version.

Does Fuchsia need to be installed manually?

Normally, no. Google says compatible speakers and displays update over the air automatically when updates are available. Keep the Nest Hub:

What to do if the update is stuck

Google advises against immediately unplugging the display or changing Wi-Fi settings while an update progress screen is active. If it has remained on an “Updating” screen for more than approximately 20 minutes, use this recovery sequence:

  1. Unplug the Nest Hub for about one minute, then reconnect it.
  2. Unplug the router for about one minute, then reconnect it.
  3. If the problem continues, factory-reset the display and set it up again. Use a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network if one is available.
  4. Contact Google Home and Nest support if the issue remains.

A factory reset erases the Nest Hub’s configuration and requires setup again. It is a last resort, not the normal method for forcing Fuchsia to install.

What is the Fuchsia situation in 2026?

The original migration is no longer a pending or newly announced update. The second-generation Nest Hub already joined Google’s Fuchsia-based hub software ecosystem in 2023.

Google’s Home APIs release notes, updated for an August 3, 2026 release, list a Fuchsia hub firmware minimum of 30.20260121.103.1602904. The same documentation also lists other hub and Cast firmware requirements, including 3.78.518349 and 3.78.540761 for separate categories.

These are developer minimum-version requirements, not necessarily a complete consumer firmware changelog. Google’s page does not clearly map the Fuchsia build to every Nest Hub model, region or retail device. Treat it as evidence that Fuchsia hub software remains represented in Google’s current platform documentation—not as proof that every second-generation Nest Hub should show that exact number. Check the device itself using the Fuchsia Version path above.

Does Fuchsia make the 2nd-gen Nest Hub worth buying?

Fuchsia alone should not determine the purchase. The second-generation Nest Hub remains a compact, camera-free Google Home display with a 7-inch, 1024 × 600 touchscreen. Its official specifications include dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, Google Cast, three far-field microphones, a Soli Motion Sense sensor, ambient light and temperature sensors, and a 15 W power adapter.

The Google Store listed it at $99.99 in the United States on the reviewed product page, although prices and availability vary by region and promotion. It is a sensible fit for a Google Home household that wants recipes, timers, photo display, media controls, smart-home control or a bedroom display without a camera.

It is a weaker choice for buyers who want a general-purpose tablet, video calls, a large screen, premium audio or guaranteed access to future Google AI features. The hardware dates from 2021, and Fuchsia does not constitute a guarantee of a particular future-support schedule.

Alternatives

  • Nest Hub Max: A larger 10.1-inch display, stronger audio and camera-based video features. It is less suitable if camera-free privacy is the priority. See Google’s official specifications.
  • Tablet with a stand: More flexible apps, browsing and video services, but you must provide the stand, charging setup and smart-home software.
  • Screen-free smart speaker: Usually simpler and cheaper for voice commands, music, timers and home control, but unsuitable for recipes, camera feeds, photo frames and touchscreen controls.

Bottom line

The 2nd-gen Google Nest Hub did receive Fuchsia OS, beginning in 2023. For most owners, the migration is easy to miss because Google preserved the existing experience; the dedicated Bluetooth menu was the clearest reported change. In 2026, Fuchsia is an established part of the device’s software ecosystem, not a new rollout to wait for. Buy the Nest Hub for its camera-free Google Home display and current price—not because the operating-system change promises a radically different device.
