A small laundry room does not need more floor area as much as it needs better zoning. Give each inch a job—wash and dry, fold, hang, sort, or store—and move those functions onto walls, doors, narrow gaps, and foldaway equipment.
A small laundry room works best when every inch has a job. Instead of trying to add more floor area, divide the room into five practical zones: wash and dry, fold, hang or air-dry, sort, and store. Then move as much of that work as possible onto the walls, behind the door, above the appliances, or into narrow movable storage.

The ideas below cover appliance layouts, storage, foldaway equipment, and finishes. Use them selectively: a stacked washer and dryer may be ideal in one room, while a counter over side-by-side machines, a wall-mounted drying rack, or a slim cart may be more useful in another.

1. Stack a compatible front-load washer and dryer
Stacking is the most direct way to exchange horizontal floor area for vertical capacity. It can leave room for a narrow cabinet, hamper, utility sink, or folding surface beside the machines.
Do not assume that any front-load washer can be placed beneath any dryer. Confirm that the models are approved for stacking and use the manufacturer-specified stacking kit where one is required. Whirlpool’s planning guidance gives an approximate stacked footprint of 29 inches wide, 80 inches high, and 32 to 34 inches deep, with about 6 inches of rear clearance for hoses and ventilation; the actual dimensions and clearances depend on the model and installation type.
Before committing, check the installation guide for electrical or gas requirements, dryer venting, water connections, drain access, leveling requirements, ceiling height, and the space needed to remove either appliance for service. A stackable washer and dryer is a major space-saving option, not a universal appliance arrangement.

2. Consider a compact laundry center or all-in-one unit
Where width is extremely limited, a factory-stacked laundry center or washer-dryer combo can place both functions in one compact footprint. Compare the unit’s usable capacity, cycle times, venting requirements, electrical supply, water and drain connections, and service access before choosing it.

All-in-one machines and compact laundry centers are not interchangeable. Some vent outdoors, some use ventless drying, and their maintenance and drying performance can differ substantially. The installation manual—not a generic dimension—is the final authority.
3. Put a folding counter over front-load machines
A continuous counter above side-by-side front-load machines creates an instant folding station and gives the appliance wall a built-in appearance. A durable, moisture-resistant surface such as laminate, solid surface, or properly finished butcher block can work well.
Design the counter so it does not prevent the machines from being leveled, pulled forward, disconnected, or serviced. Avoid permanently fastening a heavy top directly to the appliances unless the manufacturer permits that installation. A supported or removable surface is usually more practical during future repairs.
4. Install a shelf or countertop above side-by-side machines
A simpler version of the folding counter is a wall-supported shelf or countertop above the washer and dryer. It can hold folded laundry while providing a useful work surface.

This idea is most suitable for front-load machines. Top-load washers need enough vertical clearance for their lids to open fully, so measure the open lid—not just the closed appliance—before mounting anything above it.
5. Add a narrow utility sink only when the plumbing supports it
A compact sink can handle hand-washing, soaking, muddy clothing, and cleaning tasks, but it consumes valuable cabinet and counter space. It may also require new hot and cold supplies, a drain, a vent connection, and a faucet installation.
Treat a sink as a conditional upgrade rather than an essential small-room feature. Confirm that the existing plumbing, wall structure, floor protection, and local requirements support the work before planning the cabinet layout.
Storage and organization ideas
6. Use a tall, narrow pantry cabinet
A slim floor-to-ceiling cabinet can turn the gap beside the appliances into storage for detergent, towels, cleaning products, spare paper goods, and a broom. Measure the opening at the top, middle, and bottom because walls and baseboards are rarely perfectly square.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

If children or pets can enter the room, use closed storage and secure hazardous laundry chemicals according to their labels.
7. Add wall-mounted shelves above the machines
Open shelves use vertical space without adding cabinet doors or floor cabinets. Place everyday supplies within easy reach and use matching bins or containers to keep bottles from creating visual clutter.

- Durable & Rust-Resistant: Made of premium alloy steel with powder coating for rust resistance. Mesh shelves allow airflow and prevent water buildup even in humid bathroom. Heightened diamond-pattern guardrails keeps items from falling off.
- Easy to Move & Set Up: Equipped with 4 high-quality 360° swivel casters(Better wheel quality than alternatives) and an ergonomic handle, the rolling cart easily glides in and out of small space. Clear part numbers and easy-to-follow instructions make assembly a breeze.

Leave access to appliance controls, water shutoff valves, the drain, dryer vent, and electrical connections. Shelves should not become a barrier to removing a machine.
8. Mix open shelves with closed cabinets
Combining both types of storage gives the room accessibility and visual calm. Display towels, baskets, and spare hangers on open shelves, while placing detergent bottles, stain removers, and less attractive supplies behind doors.

Keep the most frequently used items between waist and shoulder height.
9. Install adjustable shelving
Adjustable shelves are useful when storage needs change. One position can accommodate tall detergent bottles; another can hold folded linens, baskets, or seasonal cleaning supplies.
Use shelf pins and panels rated for the expected load, particularly when storing liquid products. A narrow cabinet with adjustable shelves is more adaptable than a series of fixed cubbies with only one bottle height.
10. Install corner shelves
A corner that is too narrow for a full cabinet can still hold stain-removal supplies, folded towels, clothespins, or a small basket. Choose shallow shelves so they do not intrude into the walking path or collide with an open appliance door.
Corner shelves are also a good place for infrequently used items, provided they remain reachable without climbing over appliances.
11. Slide in a slim rolling laundry cart
A narrow rolling cart can occupy a gap beside or between appliances and pull out when you need detergent, dryer sheets, stain removers, or small tools. Whirlpool gives an example of a three-shelf cart approximately 81⁄3 inches wide, illustrating how little width this type of storage can require.
Measure the gap at its narrowest point and account for baseboards, handles, hoses, ventilation, and the cart’s wheels. Do not let it block an appliance door or the route needed to pull a machine forward. A slim rolling laundry cart is particularly useful when permanent cabinetry would make service access difficult.
12. Create a dedicated sorting station
Use labeled hampers or a divided sorter for whites, colors, delicates, and household textiles. In a narrow room, a vertical sorter or a wheeled model can be moved when the machines need maintenance.
Recommended Free Tools
Place the sorter near the room entrance if possible, so laundry can be separated before it reaches the appliances. Choose compartments that are easy to carry; a tall sorter is only useful if it can be emptied without becoming unstable or excessively heavy.

13. Choose stackable or collapsible hampers
Nesting, folding, or vertically arranged hampers reduce the footprint of dirty laundry. They can fit beneath a counter, inside a tall cabinet, or beside a stacked appliance.
Check the hamper’s loaded height and width, not just its empty dimensions. It should remain easy to lift or roll and should not block appliance doors, the room’s exit, or a service path.
14. Use baskets to conceal everyday clutter
Matching baskets on open shelves can hold dryer sheets, clothespins, spare hangers, cleaning cloths, and small accessories. They add texture while preventing a collection of packages from dominating a small room.
Use baskets that fit the shelf depth and can be removed without lifting them over a counter. If you are organizing open shelving, laundry room storage baskets and shelf organizers are useful accessories—but measure first so the baskets do not waste the space they are meant to improve.
15. Use the room’s vertical dead zones
Look for overlooked space above cabinets, beside a stacked unit, under shelves, and inside the back of the door. These areas can store infrequently used supplies, spare linens, folding drying equipment, or extra hangers.
Tall, narrow, wall-mounted storage systems can combine shelves, rails, baskets, and drying accessories without taking over the floor. Keep heavy items low, frequently used items at comfortable reach, and rarely used items higher up.
Foldaway tools for folding, hanging, and air-drying
16. Install an over-the-door ironing board
An over-the-door board eliminates the need to store a full-size ironing board on the floor. Polder’s documented example hangs on doors up to 1.5 inches thick and folds to approximately 1.25 inches when closed.
Measure the door thickness, trim, hinges, clearance to the wall, and the space between the door and nearby appliances. The door must still close and the mounted hardware must not interfere with handles or service access. An over-the-door ironing board is a product category, not a guaranteed fit for every laundry closet.
17. Mount a fold-down drying rack
A wall-mounted rack provides air-drying space when needed and folds flat afterward. One Greenway example lists approximately 10 feet of drying space, although dimensions and load ratings vary among products.
Mount the rack into suitable framing or use anchors rated for the wall construction and expected wet load. Follow the manufacturer’s mounting instructions, keep wet garments away from electrical controls, and confirm that the rack will not obstruct a door or appliance. A wall-mounted drying rack is one of the most effective additions when floor space is scarce.
18. Use a wall-mounted drying system above a counter
Pair a drying rack with a folding counter to create a compact work zone: unload, lay delicate items flat, fold dry clothing, and store supplies in the same area.
Keep the rack clear of outlets, controls, and light fixtures. Check the combined reach and loading pattern so wet garments do not drip onto electrical components or make the counter unusable.

19. Add a ceiling-mounted or retractable drying solution
A ceiling-mounted or retractable rack can preserve both wall and floor space, especially in a laundry closet or bathroom-laundry combination. It is useful when every wall is already occupied by cabinets or appliances.
Ceiling mounting is a construction project, not simply a hardware choice. Locate suitable framing, reinforce it when necessary, and confirm that the operating path is clear. Do not assume that a ceiling, drywall, or suspended ceiling can support a loaded rack without additional structure.
20. Hang a rail for air-drying garments
A sturdy wall rail or hanging rod gives shirts and delicate items a temporary place to drip-dry. It can fit above a counter, beside a stacked unit, or beneath a shelf.

21. Use a removable or butcher-block folding surface
A removable top can provide a generous folding area without permanently changing the appliance arrangement. It is useful for renters, evolving laundry rooms, or installations where future appliance replacement is likely.
Support the surface independently from the machines and leave access for ventilation, leveling, disconnection, and removal. Do not attach a heavy countertop directly to an appliance unless that model’s installation instructions specifically allow it.

22. Install under-cabinet or ceiling lighting

Plan wiring and fixture placement around cabinets, drying rails, damp areas, and door swings. Use products and installation methods appropriate for the room’s conditions, and have new electrical work completed in accordance with local requirements.
23. Use a lighter wall color strategically
Light paint can make a compact room feel brighter, particularly when combined with effective lighting and reflective surfaces. It does not physically enlarge the room, but it can reduce the visual weight of walls and make shelves easier to see.
Choose a washable finish for areas exposed to lint, splashes, and detergent. Sample the color under the room’s actual lighting before painting all four walls.
24. Add one strong accent wall or patterned backsplash
A small laundry room can often handle a concentrated decorative treatment without overwhelming the space. Use a patterned backsplash behind a counter or one accent wall to add personality while keeping the remaining surfaces calm.
Recommended Free Tools
In splash-prone areas, select a smooth, cleanable material and seal or finish it as required. Coordinate the accent with the appliance color, cabinet fronts, countertop, and hardware so the room looks planned rather than crowded.
25. Replace builder-grade hardware
New pulls, knobs, shelf brackets, hooks, and cabinet handles can make an inexpensive laundry room feel more deliberate without changing its footprint. Matching finishes also help separate storage zones visually.

Choose hardware that is easy to grip with damp hands and install it where it will not collide with appliance doors or the room’s entry door. This is a small change with little structural disruption.
26. Hide the laundry closet with a curtain or space-efficient door
A curtain can conceal appliances without using the swing clearance required by a hinged door. It is a practical option for a laundry closet in a hallway, bathroom, or kitchen.
A pocket door can also save swing space, but it requires a suitable wall cavity and construction work. Neither option should block required ventilation, appliance controls, shutoff valves, or the path needed to service or remove the machines. Make sure a curtain does not restrict airflow around equipment that requires ventilation.
27. Build the room around zones, not just cabinets
The strongest small-laundry layouts coordinate all five functions:
- Wash and dry: place compatible appliances with the required clearances and connections.
- Fold: add a counter, removable top, or shelf above front-load machines.
- Hang and air-dry: use a rail, wall rack, retractable rack, or ceiling-mounted solution.
- Sort: provide labeled, stackable, collapsible, or rolling hampers.
- Store: use tall cabinets, shelves, baskets, carts, door panels, and corner storage.
This zoning approach prevents a common mistake: filling the room with cabinets while leaving nowhere to fold, hang, sort, or safely access the appliances.

- Water supply lines, shutoff valves, drain, vent, gas line if applicable, and electrical requirements.
- Rear and side clearances required by each appliance’s installation guide.
- The route required to bring the machines into the room and remove them later.
- Clearances for cabinet doors, drawers, carts, hampers, the entry door, and any folding rack.
- Wall framing or suitable anchors for shelves, rails, cabinets, and drying racks.
- Lighting positions and any electrical work that may require a qualified professional or local-code review.
Keep storage away from ventilation openings, controls, shutoff valves, drain access, and service panels. New outlets, gas work, dryer-vent changes, drainage changes, structural reinforcement, and utility sinks may require qualified tradespeople and local permits or inspections.
A practical way to choose among the ideas
- Measure first. Draw the room, including doors, windows, pipes, outlets, and appliance service paths.
- Protect the essential clearances. Place appliances and confirm their installation requirements before adding storage.
- Add the missing function. If folding is the problem, prioritize a counter. If drying is the problem, choose a wall or ceiling rack. If clutter is the problem, add vertical storage or a cart.
- Prefer reversible solutions where the layout may change. Rolling carts, removable tops, baskets, and over-door accessories are easier to adapt than built-ins.
- Use permanent construction only where it earns its space. Cabinets, pocket doors, plumbing, electrical work, and reinforced wall or ceiling storage can be worthwhile, but they should be planned around service access and local requirements.
The best small laundry room is not the one with the most storage. It is the one where washing, drying, folding, sorting, hanging, and storing can happen without blocking one another.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can any washer and dryer be stacked?
Stacking saves floor width, but only when the washer and dryer are manufacturer-approved for use together and the required stacking kit, clearances, connections, and service access are provided. Verify the model-specific installation guide.
Can I put a countertop over a top-load washer?
Yes, but a top-load washer needs enough clearance for its lid to open fully. A permanent counter or shelf above it may prevent normal use, so measure the open lid before installing overhead storage.
What is the best way to add drying space in a tiny laundry room?
Use the smallest useful combination of a wall-mounted drying rack, hanging rail, fold-down counter, and removable or ceiling-mounted rack. Keep wet items away from electrical controls and mount racks to framing or correctly rated anchors.
How narrow can a rolling laundry cart be?
Measure the gap at its narrowest point, including baseboards and trim, then account for wheel movement, appliance clearances, hoses, ventilation, and door swings. A cart should not block service access or an appliance door.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Start with the appliance clearances and service path, then build upward. A compatible stacked set, folding counter, wall storage, narrow rolling cart, and fold-down drying rack can transform a cramped laundry room—but only when each addition preserves ventilation, access, safe loading, and the way the room actually needs to work.
