Quick answer: useful Alexa commands that do not require Prime
| Task | Example | Prime required? | Extra setup |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shopping list | “Alexa, add paper towels to my shopping list.” | No | None |
| Reminder | “Alexa, remind me to feed the dog at 6 p.m.” | No | Usually none |
| Lighting | “Alexa, turn on the kitchen lights.” | No | Compatible lights or switches |
| Thermostat | “Alexa, set the thermostat to 70 degrees.” | No | Compatible thermostat |
| Routine | “Alexa, good night.” | No | Create a routine |
| Product order | “Alexa, reorder detergent.” | Not necessarily available | Shopping and account requirements |
Amazon lists timers, reminders, lists, calendar questions, weather, traffic, and related productivity features as Alexa use cases. Its messaging guidance also distinguishes ordinary Alexa productivity from shopping for Prime-eligible products.

What you need before trying these commands
- An Alexa-enabled device such as an Echo speaker or Echo Show, or the Alexa app for functions supported there.
- A reliable Wi-Fi connection for most cloud-based Alexa features.
- The Alexa app for setup, contacts, lists, reminders, routines, and smart-home management.
- Compatible smart-home products for lights, plugs, thermostats, locks, cameras, vacuums, fans, or other devices.
- Manufacturer apps and account linking for some products.
Not every “Alexa-compatible” device supports every command. A smart plug may offer only on/off control, a thermostat may expose only some modes, and a robot vacuum may not support room-specific cleaning through Alexa. Amazon’s device requirements describe capabilities by device type rather than treating compatibility as universal.
#1 Best Overall
- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Household organization commands
1. Add an item to your shopping list
Say: “Alexa, add paper towels to my shopping list.”
Best for: Capturing a household need while cooking, cleaning, or noticing that supplies are running low.
Needs: No Prime membership. Review the list in the Alexa app or use it while shopping.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Adding an item to a list is not the same as purchasing it. Prime may become relevant only if you later ask Alexa to order or reorder a product.
2. Add a chore to your to-do list
Say: “Alexa, add change the HVAC filter to my to-do list.”
Use the to-do list for maintenance, errands, and chores, and say “shopping list” when you mean something to buy. Being explicit helps prevent Alexa from putting the item in the wrong list.
3. Set a reminder
Say: “Alexa, remind me to put the bins out tonight at 7.”

Reminders are useful for laundry, pet care, leaving for an appointment, taking food out of the oven, or taking bins to the curb. Amazon gives time-based pet-care reminders as an example of Alexa productivity use.
A reminder is not an emergency alert or a substitute for a medical device. Make sure the selected device is audible and that reminders are enabled.
4. Set a timer
Say: “Alexa, set a 20-minute timer.”
Timers work well for cooking, cleaning sprints, exercise, screen breaks, and parking meters. Useful follow-ups include:

- “Alexa, how much time is left?”
- “Alexa, cancel the timer.”
- “Alexa, set a second timer for the laundry.”
5. Set a recurring alarm
Say: “Alexa, set an alarm for 6:30 a.m. on weekdays.”
Use alarms for wake-up schedules, school routines, or recurring household events. Say “tomorrow,” “every weekday,” or a precise date when the timing could be ambiguous.
6. Check your calendar
Say: “Alexa, what’s on my calendar today?”
Needs: A supported calendar linked to your Alexa account.
This is useful during a morning routine or while getting ready. Remember that calendar details are spoken aloud, so consider privacy in shared rooms.
7. Check the weather
Say: “Alexa, will it rain today?”
Other useful variations include “What’s the weather this weekend?” and “Will I need an umbrella?” Weather is a standard Alexa information feature.

Say: “Alexa, how’s traffic to work?”
The Alexa app may need your home and work addresses or another configured destination. Check the destination and location settings if the estimate seems wrong, and verify important journeys in a navigation app.
Commands that keep people in sync
9. Broadcast an announcement
Say: “Alexa, announce that dinner is ready.”
Announcements broadcast a message to supported Alexa devices associated with the household. Other examples include “Announce that we’re leaving in five minutes” and “Broadcast that the dog needs to go out.”
Needs: Supported Alexa-enabled receiving devices. An Announcement is a one-way broadcast, not a two-way conversation. Amazon’s communication guidance explains the feature.
10. Call a contact
Say: “Alexa, call Mom.”
Needs: Communication setup in the Alexa app, a supported contact, permissions, and a supported region.
Amazon describes Alexa Calling to supported Alexa devices, the Alexa app, and—subject to regional limitations—many phone numbers in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Emergency numbers such as 911 are not supported through this feature. Alexa Calling is not a replacement for emergency service or a phone.

- Meet Echo Dot Max: Experience rich room-filling sound that automatically adapts to your space and fine-tunes playback. Features a built-in smart home hub and Omnisense technology for highly personalized experiences.
- Music to your ears: With nearly 3x the bass versus Echo Dot (2022 release), it fits beautifully in any space, delivering your personal sound stage with deep bass and enhanced clarity. Listen to streaming services, such as Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify, and SiriusXM. Encore!
- Do more with device pairing: Connect compatible Echo smart speakers and smart displays in different rooms, or pair with a second Echo Dot Max to enjoy even richer sound
- Simple smart home control: Set routines, pair and control lights, locks, and thousands of smart home devices that work with Alexa without needing a separate smart home hub. With Omnisense technology, you can activate routines via temperature or presence detection.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot Max doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
11. Use Drop In as an intercom
Say: “Alexa, drop in on the kitchen.”
Drop In can connect supported Alexa devices in different rooms. It is useful for calling someone downstairs or checking whether children are ready.
Because Drop In is more intrusive than an Announcement, review which people and devices have permission. Do not grant access casually.
Compatible smart-home commands
Smart-home control does not require Prime, but it does require compatible, configured hardware. Look for explicit Alexa support or the Works with Alexa certification. That certification is a compatibility signal, not a promise that every feature works on every device, routine, or region.
12. Turn compatible lights on or off
Say: “Alexa, turn on the living-room lights.”
Or: “Alexa, turn off the kitchen lights.”
Needs: Compatible bulbs, switches, or fixtures; device discovery or account linking; clear names.
Use room names and avoid duplicate names such as two devices both called “lamp.”
13. Dim the lights
Say: “Alexa, dim the living-room lights to 30 percent.”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsNeeds: A light or switch that supports brightness control. A simple on/off smart plug cannot dim a lamp. Amazon documents dimming as an Alexa smart-home capability.
14. Control a compatible smart plug
Say: “Alexa, turn on the desk lamp plug.”
Smart plugs are useful for lamps, fans with physical power switches, chargers, and decorative lighting. They are not a universal safety solution for appliances. Some devices will not resume correctly when power is restored, and heating or cooking appliances should not be automated casually. Amazon specifically cautions that electronic-button appliances may not work correctly with some smart plugs.
15. Adjust a compatible thermostat
Say: “Alexa, set the thermostat to 70 degrees.”

Other examples include “What’s the thermostat set to?” and “Set the downstairs thermostat to 68.”
Needs: A compatible thermostat and the required manufacturer account or skill. The thermostat must support the requested mode and temperature range. The Echo can be online while the thermostat itself is offline.
16. Lock a compatible door
Say: “Alexa, lock the front door.”
Needs: A compatible smart lock, account linking, and a lock that permits voice locking.
Voice unlocking may be disabled or require a PIN. Choose a lock with a reliable keypad or physical-key fallback, and review battery and guest-access settings.
17. Start a compatible robot vacuum
Say: “Alexa, start the vacuum.”
Depending on the model, you may also be able to say “Pause the vacuum,” “Send the vacuum home,” or “Start cleaning the kitchen.” Room-specific cleaning depends on the vacuum’s mapping and Alexa integration, not Alexa alone.
18. Control a fan or air purifier
Say: “Alexa, turn on the bedroom fan.”
Or: “Alexa, set the air purifier to medium.”
Capabilities vary. One product may support only power; another may expose speed, mode, air quality, or filter status.

A routine combines multiple actions under one trigger. Amazon says routines can be triggered by voice, time, alarms, and supported smart-home events. They are the difference between issuing several commands and saying one phrase.
19. Create a good-night routine
Say: “Alexa, good night.”
A routine with this phrase could turn off selected lights, lock compatible doors, adjust the thermostat, turn off safe-to-control plugs, and set an alarm.

- EASE INTO THE DAY - Set up an Alexa routine that gently wakes you with music and gradual light. Glance at the time, check reminders, or ask Alexa for weather updates.
- KEEP YOUR HOME COMFORTABLE - Control compatible smart home devices. Just ask Alexa to turn on lights or touch the screen to dim. Create routines that use motion detection to turn down the thermostat as you head out or open the blinds when you walk into a room.
20. Create a morning routine
Say: “Alexa, start my morning.”
Possible actions include stating the time and date, reading the weather and calendar, giving a news briefing, turning on lights, starting supported audio, and reporting traffic.
Keep the routine short. Too many spoken actions can make it slow and noisy. A separate workday routine may be better than one routine for every morning.
21. Create a leave-home routine
Say: “Alexa, I’m leaving.”
Depending on your devices, this could turn off lights, adjust the thermostat, lock doors, and switch off selected plugs. Test every action individually before combining it.

Say: “Alexa, movie time.”
A routine might dim compatible lights, turn on a television or streaming device if supported, and adjust other room devices. Entertainment services may require their own accounts or subscriptions.
23. Turn on exterior lights at sunset
Trigger: A scheduled sunset-based routine, where available.
This can turn on porch or driveway lights without remembering to issue a command. Check local scheduling options and ensure the lights are actually assigned to the intended group.
24. Turn on a hallway light when motion is detected
Trigger: A supported motion sensor event.
A routine can turn on a hallway light for a limited period or announce movement. Device-specific routine support varies, so check the exact sensor and light capabilities.

How to create and test an Alexa routine
- Open the Alexa app.
- Select More.
- Select Routines.
- Tap + to create a routine.
- Name the routine.
- Choose When this happens.
- Select a voice phrase, schedule, alarm, or smart-home event.
- Select Add action and add actions in the desired order.
- Choose the Alexa-enabled device that should speak or play audio, if needed.
- Save the routine.
- Test it manually, then test the real trigger.
Alexa app labels and available actions can vary by country, device, account, and software version. If the labels differ, look for the Routines section and the trigger/action controls. Edit, disable, or delete a routine from the same area rather than creating duplicates.
What Prime does—and does not—unlock
Prime is generally not required for:
- Timers and alarms
- Reminders
- Shopping and to-do lists
- Weather, traffic, conversions, and calculations
- Many Alexa communications features
- Routines
- Compatible smart-home control
- Skills that do not require their own paid service
- Music or podcasts supported by a free or separately paid service
Prime or another service may matter for:
- Ordering or reordering products
- Prime-exclusive deals
- Prime Video and other subscription content
- Paid third-party skills or services
- Advanced camera, security, or smart-home features with vendor subscriptions
In short, Prime is not the entry ticket to household automation. Compatible hardware, account linking, and reliable setup matter more for the commands above.
If Alexa cannot complete a command
- Check the device name. Replace names such as “Bedroom Lamp 2” with short, pronounceable names.
- Check the room or group. Confirm that the device is assigned to the intended room.
- Check connectivity. The Echo may be online while the smart-home device is offline.
- Check account linking. Reauthorize the manufacturer skill or service if necessary.
- Ask Alexa to discover devices.
- Try the Alexa app manually. If the app cannot control the device, voice recognition is probably not the main problem.
- Simplify the command. Try “turn on lamp” before a room-specific or multi-device phrase.
- Check capabilities. An on/off plug cannot dim a lamp, and a basic thermostat integration may not support every mode.
- Review routines. Look for disabled actions, incorrect triggers, or duplicate routines.
- Check region and language settings. Calling, skills, shopping, and some smart-home functions vary by location.
Privacy, safety, and outage considerations
- Announcements, calendar details, reminders, and calls can be heard by people nearby.
- Review Drop In permissions carefully.
- Consider voice recordings and Alexa privacy controls when placing devices in bedrooms or private areas.
- Do not use Alexa as an emergency, medical, or security system replacement.
- Avoid routines that turn on heaters, ovens, irons, kettles, or other high-heat appliances unattended.
- Do not automatically unlock exterior doors without a clear safety reason.
- Most cloud-based Alexa functions require internet access. Do not assume Matter or a hub guarantees identical offline behavior across products.
Five commands to try first
- “Alexa, add [item] to my shopping list.”
- “Alexa, remind me to [task] at [time].”
- “Alexa, announce [message].”
- “Alexa, turn off the [room] lights.”
- “Alexa, good night.”
These commands cover the biggest everyday wins: capturing tasks, remembering time-sensitive chores, coordinating people, reducing energy and lighting friction, and combining repeated bedtime actions into one routine.
