Start with one low, open area for everyday favorites; add containers for small pieces and closed or out-of-reach storage only where it suits the room and the child. These 23 ideas can help organize a bedroom, playroom, or shared living space without treating every toy as if it belongs in the same bin.
How to choose toy storage for your room
Before buying or building anything, check the available floor space, the height a child can safely reach, and the size of the toys and their containers. Decide whether you want toys visible or concealed, and consider how easily a child can carry a container and return it to its place. Books, bulky toys, and tiny pieces have different storage needs.

- For small loose toys: use a bin or divided container sized to the pieces, with age-appropriate supervision where needed.
- For books and display-worthy toys: consider a low bookcase, ledge, or open shelf.
- For frequently used toys: keep a small selection in easy reach and make the return spot obvious.
- For tall furniture or enclosed chests: check the maker’s safety instructions and the safety guidance below before using them in a child-accessible space.
Modular systems can be useful when the collection changes. IKEA’s U.S. TROFAST listing describes a frame with guide rails that allow boxes and shelves to be repositioned. That is a product feature, not evidence that the system is more durable or better value than alternatives. IKEA also offers general guidance on organizing toys, including combining open and closed storage.

Storage furniture can create hazards if a child can become trapped by a lid or if a unit tips over. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) warned in a March 5, 2014 release that some storage and toy chests could latch shut or have lids fall; it wrote, “Lids on millions of storage chests and trunks can automatically latch shut, locking children inside and suffocating them.” The CPSC’s reseller guide also lists hazards associated with toy chests, including entrapment, strangulation, pinching, crushing, and laceration.
For tall furniture, the CPSC’s childproofing guidance warns that shelves, bookcases, dressers, desks, and chests can tip and injure or kill children. Follow the furniture maker’s anchoring instructions, and use hardware suitable for the furniture and wall. An aftermarket anchor is not automatically compatible with every unit. The CPSC’s 2016 IKEA recall notice concerned specific chests and dressers; it should not be read as a recall of all current dressers.
