Flowers, greenery, candles, fruit, a runner, or a personal place setting can all work; the best choice depends on your table, routine, and taste.
Start with the space and the way you use your table
Before choosing décor, decide whether the table needs to stay mostly clear for everyday meals, homework, or serving—or whether you are styling it for a particular occasion. A low, compact centerpiece leaves sightlines and tabletop space more open; taller or more layered arrangements can make sense when the table is not being used for a meal. IKEA’s table-setting guidance also recommends starting with a style or occasion and building the setting around it (IKEA UK).

Pick a palette or mood before adding objects: minimal, rustic, vintage, or seasonal are useful starting points. You do not need a matching set—pieces you already own can make the table feel more personal. For everyday use, favor details that are easy to move or maintain; for a gathering, linens and place settings can do more of the decorating.

3. Seasonal foliage in a simple vase

6. A herb-and-greenery arrangement

Textiles and place settings

15. A tablecloth for a complete change of mood
Let a tablecloth set the color and pattern, then keep the centerpiece and place settings simple. A cloth can make the table feel different without replacing its furniture.
16. Woven placemats for natural texture
Pair woven placemats with plain dinnerware for a relaxed contrast. This is a practical way to add texture while keeping the rest of the table uncomplicated.

18. A layered runner and placemats
Combine a runner with placemats when the table still has enough usable space for meals. Choose one patterned textile and keep the other quieter so the layers do not compete.
19. A simple place setting with one decorative accent
Let the dinnerware do most of the work, then add one detail such as a folded napkin or a small sprig. This approach keeps the center clear and avoids crowding a table already in use.

Seasonal and personal styling
20. A seasonal centerpiece
Make a small cluster of seasonal flowers, foliage, or fruit the table’s focal point, and change it when the season or occasion changes. IKEA’s guides offer ideas for adapting table decoration to different occasions and styles (IKEA UK; IKEA Switzerland).

21. A vintage mix
Combine related but not identical pieces, such as vintage-style tableware and small flower vases. Repeating a color or material can make the mix feel intentional while preserving its collected character.
22. A collected, personal tablescape
Bring together objects with personal meaning instead of aiming for a perfectly matched set. For a relaxed yet refined look, event designer Beth Helmstetter describes using “vintage-inspired china in soft hues, heirloom silver, and a mix of gathered florals.” Her advice appeared in Homes & Gardens’ garden-party decorating ideas.
23. A minimal centerpiece
When the table already has patterned linens, distinctive dinnerware, or several place-setting details, keep the center spare: one low bowl or a few restrained objects may be enough. Livingetc advises paring back when other elements are already taking up visual or physical space (centerpiece ideas).
Choosing a centerpiece that works for everyday meals
Use the table’s function as the deciding factor. A bowl, small vase, or movable tray is easy to clear; a runner or place settings can add color without requiring a permanent display. If you want conversation and serving space to remain open, choose low or small objects rather than a large centerpiece. Homes & Gardens quotes chef and culinary expert Elle Philippe cautioning that “a big, overpowering centerpiece is more cumbersome and awkward than not,” particularly when it blocks views or occupies space needed for dishes. That is design advice, not a formal safety or ergonomic standard (Homes & Gardens).
