20 Coolest Smart Home Gadgets of 2024—and What They Actually Require

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The coolest smart-home gadgets of 2024 were not necessarily the newest or most expensive. The standouts combined a genuinely useful automation with a defining 2024-era idea: Matter and Thread interoperability, local processing, AI-assisted cleaning or cooking, self-maintaining hardware, physical controls, retrofit installation, or less dependence on monthly cloud fees.

This is a best-available-in-2024 buying guide, not a list limited to products that launched on January 1, 2024. Products released earlier but still among the best choices that year are labeled Best available in 2024. Products that first became available during the year are labeled New for 2024. Prices are U.S. launch MSRPs or listed prices where noted; sale prices and regional availability can differ.

What made a smart-home gadget interesting in 2024?

In 2024, the important question was not simply whether a device could be controlled from a phone. The more interesting products solved a physical problem: a wall-mounted screen made control easier for guests, a retrofit lock avoided replacing an entire deadbolt, a robot dock reduced daily maintenance, and a wired floodlight camera removed battery anxiety.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Interoperability was another major theme. Matter 1.3 was released on May 8, 2024, while the core specification for Matter 1.4 is dated November 4, 2024. But Matter was not yet a universal compatibility layer. Device categories, commands, notifications, and advanced features still varied between Alexa, Google Home, Apple Home, SmartThings, and Home Assistant. Cameras, in particular, were not part of Matter’s mainstream 2024 device support.

  • Group Control and Sharing:You can set a group for some wifi smart plugs and control connected appliances with one tap. Also you can share your wifi outlet plug by App with your families and enjoy the smart life together.

That is why each recommendation below separates what the hardware can do from which ecosystem exposes those functions. A Matter logo is useful, but it does not guarantee identical behavior everywhere.

1. Amazon Echo Hub: the best dedicated smart-home control panel

Status: New for 2024.

The Echo Hub is one of the clearest examples of a product designed primarily for smart-home control rather than entertainment. Its 8-inch touchscreen is intended for lights, locks, cameras, thermostats, Ring security systems, routines, and room-based controls. It can be wall-mounted or used with an optional stand.

Amazon says the Echo Hub supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Zigbee, Thread, Sidewalk, and Matter. That combination can reduce the number of separate bridges in an Alexa-oriented home, although support still varies by device category and manufacturer. Amazon’s Echo Hub feature overview explains its intended control-panel role, while independent reviews from Tom’s Guide and TechRadar provide useful context about the interface.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best for: Alexa households, Ring users, wall-mounted dashboards, and families who do not want to use a voice command for every light or scene.

Construction and setup considerations: A wall-mounted touchscreen needs a deliberate power-cable plan. Decide whether the cable will be surface-mounted, routed through the wall, or hidden in millwork before installation. The optional stand is easier for renters but adds cost and gives up the clean, permanent dashboard effect.

Biggest drawback: It is more useful as a controller than as a general entertainment display, and Amazon’s own ecosystem generally receives the deepest integration. Matter support does not mean every Matter device or advanced feature will appear on the screen.

2. Amazon Echo Spot: the best compact smart alarm clock

Status: New for 2024.

The 2024 Echo Spot revived the compact smart alarm clock. Amazon launched it in the U.S. on July 8, 2024, at a $79.99 price, with a $44.99 Prime Day introductory price. Its small display shows the time, weather, alarms, song information, and selected Alexa controls without taking over a nightstand like a full smart display.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Echo Spot is a good example of restrained smart-home design. It does one small job well: making a bedside alarm, morning routine, timer, and voice assistant more useful at a glance. It supports Matter over Wi-Fi, but PCWorld’s 2024 assessment noted that it does not include a Thread radio.

Best for: Bedrooms, nightstands, alarm routines, and users who want glanceable information without a camera-equipped smart display.

Biggest drawback: The screen is small, and it does not have the broader entertainment and camera features of an Echo Show. It is a smart alarm clock with Alexa, not a substitute for a whole-home dashboard.

3. Aqara Hub M3: the best multi-protocol smart-home hub

Status: New for 2024. Aqara announced it at CES 2024 and began global availability on May 8, 2024.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Aqara Hub M3 is smart-home infrastructure disguised as a small gadget. It combines Zigbee, Thread, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, infrared control, Matter-controller functions, and Matter-bridge capabilities. That means it can serve as an Aqara hub, expose selected legacy Aqara devices to Matter, and run certain automations closer to the home rather than sending every action to a remote server.

Aqara describes the M3 as a multi-protocol Matter controller with edge capabilities in its product announcement and global-availability announcement.

Best for: Aqara-heavy homes, users with Zigbee Aqara sensors, infrared-controlled equipment, and households attempting to combine Aqara with Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, or Home Assistant.

Important limitation: A bridge is not the same thing as native support. Selected Aqara devices can be exposed to other Matter ecosystems, but advanced settings and automation options may remain richer in Aqara Home. Third-party Matter support was also limited to selected brands and device types at launch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Construction and setup considerations: Treat a multi-protocol hub as part of the home’s infrastructure. Place it where the radio coverage makes sense, document which devices depend on it, and provide reliable power. It simplifies a mixed system, but it also becomes another app and another possible point of failure.

4. Google Nest Learning Thermostat, 4th generation: the best premium comfort and energy gadget

Status: New for 2024. U.S. availability began August 20, 2024, at a $279.99 launch price.

The fourth-generation Nest Learning Thermostat introduced a larger 2.7-inch display, a redesigned temperature sensor, Matter support, weather-aware behavior, and features intended to identify possible HVAC issues. Google announced it on August 6, 2024, in its Nest Learning Thermostat announcement.

Google says it works with most 24-volt gas, electric, oil, forced-air, heat-pump, and radiant systems. It is designed to work without a common C wire in most cases, but Google’s specifications say a C wire or Nest Power Connector may be needed in limited installations. Setup requires the Google Home app; the product specification page identifies those compatibility and wiring details.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best for: Google Home households, homeowners who value design and room sensing, and people who want one system for schedules, comfort, and energy reporting.

Do not promise a fixed energy saving: Results depend on climate, HVAC type, insulation, schedules, sensor placement, and occupant behavior. Matter support also does not erase the deeper native functionality available inside Google Home.

Construction and installation considerations: Check the HVAC equipment and existing thermostat wiring before buying. Heat pumps, radiant systems, multi-stage equipment, and proprietary controls deserve extra attention. A thermostat that looks easy to install can create expensive comfort problems if the system type is configured incorrectly.

5. Aqara Smart Lock U200: the best retrofit lock for Apple Home Key and Matter

Status: New for 2024. Global availability began July 9, 2024.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Aqara Smart Lock U200 is one of the most convincing examples of Matter being used for a practical retrofit. It fits over compatible existing deadbolts instead of requiring a complete exterior lock replacement, and it adds fingerprint access, PINs, NFC cards, physical keys, Matter over Thread, and Apple Home Key.

Aqara positioned the U200 as one of the first retrofit locks to combine Matter over Thread with Apple Home Key. The launch announcement, U.S. product page, and user manual contain the important compatibility details.

Best for: Renters or homeowners who want retrofit installation, Apple Home users who want tap-to-unlock Home Key, and families who need several entry methods.

Govee Smart Light Bulbs, A19 Color Changing Light Bulb, 800 LM, E26 Base | Works with Matter, Alexa and Google Assistant, 16 Million Colors RGBWW, WiFi & Bluetooth LED Light Bulbs, Music Sync, 4 Pack
  • 16 Million DIY Colors: Govee smart light bulbs own millions of color and 54 preset scene modes, you can explore your favored one or pick one suits your moods most, bringing yourself a real fantastic lighting experience(Working Voltage: AC 120V).
  • Music Sync: Our smart light bulbs change color and brightness simultaneously when sounds are detected by the microphone on your phone. Note: only works when the microphone is not occupied. Download Govee Home App and enable microphone permissions.
  • Smart Control: Govee color changing light bulbs make it possible to control your bulbs with simple voice commands. And you'd also feel free to turn your smart light bulbs on/off, adjust brightness, or change the colors, set scenes via Govee Home App. (Note: Doesn't support 5G)
  • Group Control: Simplify daily setups by grouping smart bulbs & Govee devices. Create a scheme, add devices, and control them simultaneously. Ensure bulbs are on stable 2.4GHz WiFi for optimal experience. Please Note: This A19 smart bulb cannot be used with smart switches.
  • Timer and Schedule: Applying the ceiling fan light bulbs to your daily routine now is easier than ever, with timer function and modes like Sunrise & Sunset, you can set your bulbs to brighten when you wake up, and gradually dim when you fall asleep.

Check before buying: For U.S. deadbolts, Aqara says the lock is intended for compatible single-cylinder deadbolts with 2 3/8-inch or 2 3/4-inch backsets. Door alignment and smooth lock movement matter just as much as the electronics. A motor cannot reliably compensate for a door that drags, a strike plate that is misaligned, or a deadbolt that already binds.

Apple Home Key requires compatible Apple hardware and operating systems. The manual lists an iPhone XS or newer running iOS 17.1 or later, or an Apple Watch Series 4 or newer running watchOS 10.1 or later. Third-party Matter use also requires a Matter controller and Thread Border Router. Remote control and advanced automations may require the Aqara M3 or another suitable hub.

6. Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra: the premium autonomous floor cleaner

Status: 2024 model.

The Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra represents the 2024 high end of robot floor cleaning. Its all-in-one dock handles tasks such as dust emptying, mop washing, hot-air drying, and water management, reducing the daily maintenance that makes many robot cleaners less convenient than advertised. Roborock identifies it as a 2024 product and its first Matter-certified robot vacuum.

See Roborock’s product information and refill-and-drainage details for model and dock requirements.

Best for: Large homes, pet owners, mostly hard-floor spaces, and buyers willing to pay to reduce daily vacuuming and mopping chores.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Biggest drawback: The dock is large, and automated cleaning is not maintenance-free. Brushes, filters, dust bags, tanks, and mop components still need cleaning or replacement. Matter support should also be interpreted narrowly: basic smart-home control does not necessarily reproduce the manufacturer’s complete mapping, camera, cleaning, or obstacle-avoidance features in every ecosystem.

Construction considerations: Measure the dock location, including door swings, cabinet clearances, and the route the robot must use to reach all rooms. If a water-connected version is being considered, plan the supply and drain path before cabinetry is finalized.

7. eufy Robot Vacuum Omni S1 Pro: the most unusual mopping robot

Status: New for 2024; launched in June 2024 at a $1,499.99 U.S. price. This is a 2024 retrospective pick, not an unqualified current U.S. recommendation.

The S1 Pro uses a continuously refreshed roller mop rather than relying only on stationary mop pads. Eufy called it the HydroJet system and listed 8,000 Pa suction, a 10-in-1 station, 3D MatrixEye obstacle avoidance, and real-time mop refreshing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The product page explains the roller-mop design. Eufy later announced that the S1 Pro was discontinued in the U.S. in April 2026, while support continues and inventory may vary by retailer or region; see the company’s discontinuation notice.

Best for: Hard-floor homes and readers interested in mopping innovation rather than simply buying the robot with the largest advertised suction number.

Biggest drawback: It is a poor fit for carpet-dominant homes and was expensive at launch. Buyers now need to verify availability, accessories, warranty coverage, and service support before purchasing.

8. SwitchBot S10: the boldest plumbing-connected robot cleaner

Status: New for 2024.

The SwitchBot S10 attempted to solve a major robot-mop annoyance: filling clean-water tanks and emptying dirty water. Its dual-station design can connect to plumbing, while its roller mop is washed continuously. SwitchBot lists 6,500 Pa suction, automatic water refill and drainage, and RinseSync roller-mop cleaning.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

See the S10 product page and U.S. setup information.

Best for: New construction, major remodels, large hard-floor areas, and homeowners who hate maintaining robot-vacuum water tanks.

Do not treat it as plug-and-play plumbing: The water station needs a suitable supply and drain path. That may involve cabinetry modifications, access panels, shutoff planning, and protection against leaks. Tank-based operation is often more practical for renters or homeowners who do not want to alter a finished room.

Independent user reports describe water-station connection and refill problems, but those reports are anecdotal and should not be treated as proof of a universal defect. The important buying lesson is that plumbing increases convenience and also increases the number of possible failure points.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

9. Samsung Bespoke Jet Bot Combo AI: the AI-and-steam cleaning concept made real

Status: 2024 model, with retail features and availability varying by market.

Samsung’s Bespoke Jet Bot Combo AI uses object recognition, floor detection, steam cleaning, spinning mops, stain detection, and an automated cleaning station that washes, steams, and dries mop pads. Samsung’s CES 2024 announcement described carpet detection, mop lifting or removal, and automatic return trips for stain cleaning.

That wording needs an important qualification: Samsung said the product was still in development at CES and that features could change. The CES announcement should therefore be used to explain the product’s direction, not as proof that every demonstrated function appears in every retail version.

Best for: Samsung SmartThings households, mixed-floor homes, and readers interested in AI-assisted floor recognition and wet cleaning.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Biggest drawback: Recognition systems can misidentify objects or surfaces, and steam and mop systems still require maintenance. Samsung’s strongest integration is through SmartThings; Matter compatibility should not be assumed to expose every cleaning feature.

10. eufy Indoor Cam S350: the feature-rich indoor camera without a standard monthly fee

Status: 2024-era pick.

The eufy Indoor Cam S350 combines a 4K wide-angle camera with a 2K telephoto camera, 8x hybrid zoom, 360-degree pan and tilt, AI tracking, local microSD storage, and a physical privacy mode that turns the camera away. Eufy lists microSD support up to 128 GB and says basic notifications and recording do not require a standard monthly subscription.

See eufy’s S350 product information for storage and feature details.

Best for: Pets, children, indoor monitoring, and buyers who want detailed video with local-storage options.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

  • 【Double Stability & Wide Space】The screw included can be used to secure it on duplex outlet. The plastic prong at the back is for stable purposes also. For USB receptacle and GFCI outlet, the plastic prong needs to be cut off before use. 3-sided design and 1.7 inches large space between 5 sockets make it easier to use for all kinds of equipment
  • 【1 USB- C & 3 USB-A】USB C charging port features 3A Max, USB A charging port features 2.4A Max, compatible with almost all usb devices(the actual current is decided by the demand for the devices)
  • 【Super Safety】3 complementary surge protection circuits(TVS MOV GDT) with the minimum energy-absorbing capacity of 1050 Joules. This plug extension outlet wall mount also has overload protection, short-circuit protection, over current protection, over-voltage protection and overheating protection

Privacy qualification: No standard monthly fee does not mean that nothing ever leaves the home. Eufy says thumbnail-preview images may be temporarily stored in the cloud, and cross-camera tracking through HomeBase S380 can involve additional charges after a trial. A microSD card also introduces its own maintenance and failure considerations.

Construction and placement considerations: Avoid placing an indoor camera in bedrooms, bathrooms, or other locations where occupants reasonably expect privacy. Check Wi-Fi coverage, provide a stable power route, enable two-factor authentication if offered, and use the physical privacy position whenever monitoring is not needed.

11. Ring Battery Doorbell Pro: the advanced battery doorbell for Alexa households

Status: 2024-era pick.

The Ring Battery Doorbell Pro combines 1536p HD+ video, HDR, 3D Motion Detection, Bird’s Eye View, package and person detection, color night vision, two-way talk, and dual-band Wi-Fi. It is a strong choice for an Alexa-oriented home already using Ring Alarm or other Ring cameras.

Ring’s support documentation is especially important because it identifies which detection and recording features require a compatible Ring subscription.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best for: Alexa households and entrances where battery installation is preferred but more advanced motion detection is wanted.

Biggest drawback: Ring’s cloud features and event history are tied to its subscription structure. Battery life varies with motion volume, Wi-Fi strength, weather, temperature, and settings. A wired doorbell may be a better choice for a busy entrance or a home where charging is inconvenient.

Ring is also more ecosystem-dependent than Matter-based lighting or sensors. Buy it for the complete Ring experience, not on the assumption that every feature will appear identically in another smart-home platform.

12. Arlo Wired Floodlight Camera: the best late-2024 outdoor camera release

Status: New for 2024. Arlo announced it on October 15, 2024, with a $149.99 MSRP.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Arlo Wired Floodlight Camera addresses a basic but often overlooked problem: outdoor cameras with floodlights can consume batteries quickly. Continuous wired power makes more sense for driveways, patios, side yards, and garages where a permanent power source is available.

Arlo’s announcement provides the launch information.

Best for: Outdoor locations with a suitable power connection and homeowners who do not want to climb a ladder to recharge a camera.

Installation considerations: Wired does not mean effortless. Outdoor power, weatherproofing, conduit, mounting height, and local electrical requirements matter. Depending on the existing connection, an electrician may be appropriate.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Biggest drawback: Advanced Arlo security features are tied to Arlo Secure subscriptions. Floodlight brightness and motion zones also need careful adjustment so the camera does not illuminate neighboring properties or trigger unnecessary alerts.

13. Philips Hue Twilight: the best smart sleep-and-wake lamp

Status: 2024-era pick.

The Philips Hue Twilight is a bedside sleep-and-wake light with two light sources, ColorCast gradient projection, very low dimming, built-in sleep automation, and gradual sunrise-style wake-up transitions. Philips Hue lists compatibility with Matter, Alexa, Google Home, Apple Home, Samsung SmartThings, and other platforms.

The U.S. product page lists the Twilight at $319.99 and explains its sleep and wake-up functions.

Best for: Bedrooms, daily routines, and users who prefer gradual lighting to abrupt alarms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Biggest drawback: It is a luxury lamp, not a budget sleep light. Some advanced customization requires a Hue Bridge, and the high price only makes sense if the owner will actually use scheduled routines.

The Twilight can support a bedtime or wake-up routine, but it should not be presented as a treatment for insomnia or as a substitute for clinical care.

14. Flic Twist with Matter Controller: the best physical dial for a voice-heavy home

Status: Matter controller released in 2024.

The Flic Twist is a physical rotational dial designed to control lights, scenes, volume, brightness, and other Matter devices. Flic announced its independent Matter Controller at IFA 2024. It is interesting because it rejects the assumption that every smart-home action should happen through a phone or voice assistant.

See the Matter Controller announcement for the release context.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best for: Lighting scenes, guests, children, older family members, and anyone who wants tactile control.

Biggest drawback: A dial is excellent for simple adjustments but less useful for complex device status or multi-step configuration. Confirm the exact Matter device and ecosystem support for the version being sold, and account for firmware and app updates.

15. Legrand radiant Matter switches and dimmers: the practical in-wall upgrade

Status: Announced for 2024; verify exact retail SKUs and availability before ordering.

Legrand’s radiant collection was announced with Matter-enabled Wi-Fi switches, dimmers, and outlets intended to work with approved Matter controllers from Amazon, Google, Apple, and Samsung. Unlike a smart bulb, an in-wall switch keeps a familiar physical control available to everyone in the room.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Legrand’s announcement describes the planned product family.

Best for: Homeowners, remodels, new construction, and anyone who wants whole-room lighting control without replacing every bulb.

  • Motion Sensor Trash Can: This touchless bathroom trash can utilizes advanced infrared sensing technology, 0.1 seconds of sensing automatically open the lid, and automatically close the lid if no object movement is detected within 5 seconds
  • Manual Normally Open: If you need to keep the trash can open for an extended period, you can manually press the up-arrow button. After use, simply press the down-arrow button to close the lid of the trash can

  • Waterproof & Moisture-Proof: This automatic trash can is made of high-quality ABS material, robust, and the bottom is non-slip. With an IPX5 waterproof rating, adapt to the bathroom splash environment, to ensure a long time use

Installation considerations: In-wall electrical work may require a licensed electrician. Neutral-wire requirements, load type, box depth, multi-way switching, and local electrical rules vary by model and installation. Matter does not remove those physical requirements.

Why it belongs: It is less visually exciting than a robot or AI appliance, but wall controls are among the smart-home upgrades most likely to remain useful every day.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

16. Dreo ChefMaker Combi Fryer: the most convincing smart cooking gadget

Status: Best available in 2024; not a 2024 launch. Dreo’s product had already reached the market, while Tom’s Guide selected it as its 2024 best air fryer.

The ChefMaker combines a 6-quart cooking chamber, temperature probe, water atomization, super-convection heating, algorithmic cooking modes, Wi-Fi, app notifications, and guided recipes. Dreo lists a 4.3-inch display, a 100 to 450 degree Fahrenheit temperature range, 1,800 watts of power, and a 200 ml water tank.

See Dreo’s product specifications, the Tom’s Guide review, and the 2024 award coverage.

Best for: Steak, fish, reheating, and cooks who want probe-driven cooking and guided recipes rather than another basic air fryer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Biggest drawback: It is large and expensive for an air fryer. Guided cooking still depends on food thickness, starting temperature, probe placement, and basic food-safety practices. Marketing language such as perfect every time should not be treated as an independently verified result.

17. Brisk It Origin 580 AI: the most interesting AI outdoor-cooking gadget

Status: 2024-era pick.

The Brisk It Origin 580 is a connected pellet grill with AI-assisted cooking. Brisk It says its Vera system monitors the grill and adapts to unexpected changes, while 2024 coverage highlighted AI-generated cooking guidance and adaptive operation.

Read Brisk It’s description of Vera, the TechRadar coverage, and the Tom’s Guide 2024 award coverage.

Best for: Pellet-grill newcomers and outdoor cooks who want guided barbecue rather than constant manual temperature management.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Important qualification: AI can suggest a cooking plan and adapt the grill, but it cannot guarantee food safety or compensate for poor preparation. Pellet grills still need cleaning, dry pellet storage, temperature verification, and maintenance. The adaptive-control claim should be attributed to the manufacturer unless independent testing confirms a particular result.

18. Samsung Bespoke AI Laundry Combo: the most useful AI appliance for a small laundry room

Status: New for 2024 in the U.S.; regional model names and availability vary.

Samsung introduced the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo in the U.S. in April 2024 as an all-in-one washer and dryer. Samsung lists a 5.3-cubic-foot drum, a 7-inch AI Home display, AI Opti Wash and Dry, fabric and soil sensing, and SmartThings reporting for water and energy use. Samsung later announced European availability at IFA 2024.

See Samsung’s U.S. announcement and European announcement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best for: Apartments, small laundry rooms, and households that value not having to transfer wet clothes between machines.

Biggest drawback: An all-in-one machine can have longer total cycles than separate washer and dryer units. Drying performance, heat-pump design, dimensions, drainage, and electrical requirements vary by region and model. AI should be understood as sensing and cycle optimization, not autonomous intelligence.

Construction considerations: Confirm door clearance, floor loading, water supply, drain height, electrical service, and delivery access before ordering. Large appliances are difficult to return after a laundry-room opening has been designed around the wrong dimensions.

19. Home Assistant Green: the best privacy-and-control-oriented hub

Status: Best available in 2024; launched in 2023.

Home Assistant Green is a plug-and-play entry point to the open-source Home Assistant platform. Home Assistant lists a $199 recommended U.S. MSRP and describes setup as connecting power and network cables, opening the app or web interface, and allowing the system to detect devices.

See the Home Assistant Green product page and the original announcement.

Best for: Privacy-conscious users, mixed-brand homes, advanced automations, and people who want more local control than a single-vendor cloud ecosystem usually provides.

Important limitation: Green is the software hub and computer, not automatically every radio in the home. Zigbee, Thread, Z-Wave, or Bluetooth may require compatible hardware or adapters. Some integrations still depend on third-party cloud services.

Biggest drawback: It requires more configuration and troubleshooting than Alexa, Google Home, or Apple Home. It is an excellent enthusiast platform, but not necessarily the easiest first purchase for someone who wants a single app with almost no maintenance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Biggest drawback: Caséta is not the cheapest route to automation and generally requires a Lutron Smart Bridge for full remote control and broader integrations. Compatibility still depends on the load, wiring, location, and exact switch model.

Why it belongs: The best smart-home product is often the one that quietly works every day. Lutron is less futuristic than a camera robot, but dependable lighting control usually delivers more lasting value than a novelty feature.

Matter in 2024: what it solved and what it did not

Matter made smart-home shopping less confusing, but it did not eliminate ecosystem planning. Four terms matter:

  • Matter-compatible device: A device that can communicate using the Matter standard, potentially across supported ecosystems.
  • Matter controller: The hub or platform that commissions and manages Matter devices. An app alone is not always enough.
  • Thread Border Router: Network equipment that connects Thread devices to the home network. A Thread device may pair over Matter but still need a Border Router.
  • Matter bridge: Hardware that exposes devices using another protocol, such as Zigbee, to a Matter ecosystem. Bridged devices may not expose every native function.

Matter over Wi-Fi and Matter over Thread are not the same setup. Wi-Fi Matter devices use the home Wi-Fi network. Thread devices need a Thread mesh and a Border Router. Products such as the Aqara Hub M3 may combine controller, Border Router, and bridge functions, while a product such as the Echo Spot supports Matter over Wi-Fi without a Thread radio.

Native ecosystem support can still be richer than Matter. A robot vacuum may expose basic start and stop controls but keep mapping, room selection, obstacle images, cleaning modes, and maintenance alerts inside its manufacturer app. Cameras and advanced security features were particularly dependent on vendor ecosystems in 2024.

Before buying, ask four questions: Which protocol does the device use? Which controller is required? Which features are available in my chosen ecosystem? What still requires the manufacturer’s app or cloud service?

Do these gadgets need a hub, professional installation, or a subscription?

Product type Likely requirement What to check
Echo Hub Built-in support for several protocols Individual device-category compatibility and a permanent power plan if wall-mounted
Echo Spot Wi-Fi; Matter over Wi-Fi No Thread radio, so do not buy it as a Thread Border Router
Aqara U200 Matter controller and Thread Border Router for third-party Matter use Deadbolt dimensions, door alignment, Apple hardware, and remote-access requirements
Aqara Hub M3 Acts as a controller, Border Router, Zigbee hub, and bridge Supported brands, device categories, and which features remain in Aqara Home
Nest thermostat Compatible 24-volt HVAC system and Google Home setup C wire or power connector needs, heat-pump wiring, and professional installation if uncertain
In-wall switches Electrical installation Neutral wire, box depth, load type, multi-way circuits, and local code
Floodlight camera Permanent outdoor power Weatherproofing, conduit, mounting, and whether an electrician is needed
SwitchBot S10 Water supply and drain route for plumbing mode Cabinet access, leak protection, shutoffs, and whether tank operation is preferable
Hue lighting Bluetooth for basic functions; Hue Bridge for broader capability Scenes, automations, remote access, and Matter integration requirements
Lutron Caséta Smart Bridge for full integration Switch model, load type, wiring, and multi-way compatibility
Robot vacuums and cameras Usually Wi-Fi and a vendor account or cloud service Local operation, remote access, notifications, storage, and maintenance costs

Subscriptions and hidden recurring costs

Do not treat no mandatory subscription as the same as no ongoing cost.

  • Ring Battery Doorbell Pro: Advanced detection and event history may require Ring Protect.
  • Arlo Wired Floodlight Camera: Advanced security features are tied to Arlo Secure plans.
  • eufy Indoor Cam S350: Basic local recording is available, but cloud thumbnails, HomeBase features, or cross-camera tracking may involve additional charges.
  • Robot vacuums: Dust bags, filters, brushes, mop pads, cleaning solution, and proprietary accessories cost money even when video subscriptions are not involved.
  • Smart locks: Batteries eventually need replacement, and hubs may be required for remote access.
  • Smart hubs: A device can run local automations while individual integrations still depend on a manufacturer’s cloud service.
  • Large appliances: App accounts, replacement parts, service availability, and future cloud-policy changes matter over a much longer ownership period.

What works when the internet goes down?

There are four different questions hidden inside the phrase works offline:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Can I control it locally? A switch, lock, or robot may continue to work on the local network or through Bluetooth.
  2. Do local automations continue? This depends on whether the controller and automation engine are local.
  3. Do remote access and notifications work? Usually not without internet access, even if the device itself remains functional.
  4. Can voice assistants work? Cloud voice services generally require an internet connection.

Home Assistant Green and some hub-based systems can support more local behavior, but no product should be assumed to be completely cloud-independent without checking its documentation. Cameras may continue recording locally while losing remote viewing. A smart lock should always retain a physical key or another reliable local entry method. A thermostat should continue controlling HVAC safely even if app features disappear.

Are the AI features trustworthy?

AI was a useful feature category in 2024, not a guarantee of quality. Robot vacuums can misidentify objects, floor types, cords, or pet accidents. Cameras can confuse people, pets, packages, and shadows. Smart grills can adapt a cooking plan but cannot replace food-safety judgment. Laundry systems can sense soil and fabric conditions but cannot guarantee ideal results for every garment. Thermostats can flag a possible HVAC anomaly but cannot replace a technician.

Use careful language when evaluating these products. The manufacturer may say a system recognizes stains, adapts to unexpected events, or detects HVAC problems. Independent testing can establish whether the feature is useful in practice. A product should not receive extra credit merely because its marketing uses the word AI.

Installation and construction checklist

Before ordering a smart-home product for a remodel or new build, answer these questions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Does it need a dedicated hub, Matter controller, or Thread Border Router?
  • Does the chosen ecosystem expose the features you actually want?
  • Does it require 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, strong mesh coverage, or a wired network connection?
  • Does an in-wall device require a neutral wire, a deeper electrical box, or a licensed electrician?
  • Does a thermostat work with the existing HVAC equipment and wiring?
  • Does a lock fit the existing deadbolt and close smoothly without forcing?
  • Does a camera have a permanent, weatherproof power route or will battery charging be practical?
  • Does a robot dock fit under counters, beside walls, and through doorways?
  • Does a plumbing-connected cleaner have a supply, drain, shutoff, and leak-access plan?
  • Can the device be reset, replaced, or serviced without opening finished walls?
  • What happens if the internet, cloud account, or manufacturer service is unavailable?
  • What filters, bags, batteries, pads, cleaning chemicals, or subscriptions will cost money later?

Common failure modes and recovery planning

Matter pairing failures

The usual causes are a missing controller, a missing Thread Border Router, outdated firmware, a device already paired to another ecosystem, Wi-Fi isolation, or a router that prevents local discovery. A product can support Matter and still fail to expose the device category or feature you expected. Keep the manufacturer app available for firmware updates and consult the product’s reset procedure before repeatedly attempting pairing.

Smart-lock failures

Check the door’s mechanical operation first. Low batteries, poor Thread coverage, an incompatible cylinder, an unavailable Apple Home Key requirement, or a lock that cannot fully throw the bolt can all appear to be software problems. Keep a physical key available and do not close the door for the first time until calibration has been tested repeatedly.

Robot-vacuum failures

Cords, socks, toys, dark or reflective surfaces, wet mop heads meeting carpet, undersized docks, dirty-water odors, and depleted consumables remain common practical problems. Advertised suction values are manufacturer specifications, not a complete measure of cleaning performance. A 12,000 Pa claim does not automatically outperform an 8,000 Pa model in every room.

Camera failures

Wi-Fi dead zones, excessive motion, cold weather, false alerts, failed storage cards, and subscription surprises are more likely to affect ownership than headline resolution. Test motion zones, enable privacy settings, secure the account, and decide how footage will be retained before relying on a camera for security.

Thermostat failures

Incompatible HVAC wiring, incorrect heat-pump configuration, poor sensor placement, missing common-wire power, and bad schedules can all produce uncomfortable rooms or equipment cycling. When the wiring or equipment type is unclear, have an HVAC professional verify compatibility before installation.

Promising announcements that did not make the main 20

A definitive buying guide should separate products that were genuinely purchasable from products that were merely demonstrated at CES.

Abode announced the Edge Camera at CES 2024 with claims including Wi-Fi HaLow range of more than 1.5 miles and AI detection. However, public evidence did not establish that it became a generally available, independently tested retail product during 2024. It belongs in a watch list, not the main buying recommendations. See Abode’s announcement and the later community discussion about availability at r/Abode.

Samsung’s Ballie was showcased as an AI home-companion robot at CES 2024, but it was a demonstration and future product rather than a verified 2024 retail purchase. It should not be presented as one of the best gadgets readers could actually buy. See Samsung’s Ballie demonstration.

Which gadget is right for your household?

  • Smart-home beginner: Choose an Echo Spot for simple Alexa control, an Echo Hub for a visual dashboard, or the Nest thermostat if HVAC compatibility is confirmed.
  • Renter: Favor the Echo Spot, a tabletop Echo Hub, Hue lighting, or a compatible Aqara U200 retrofit. Avoid in-wall switches and plumbing-connected cleaners unless the property owner approves the work.
  • Apple Home household: The Aqara U200 is the standout if the deadbolt and Apple Home Key requirements fit. Hue Twilight is a strong lifestyle addition.
  • Alexa household: Echo Hub and Ring Battery Doorbell Pro offer the most coherent native experience.
  • Google household: The fourth-generation Nest Learning Thermostat is the most consequential upgrade if the HVAC system is compatible.
  • Privacy-first enthusiast: Home Assistant Green, local-capable Matter or Zigbee devices, Lutron Caséta, and the eufy S350 with local storage are the strongest starting points, while remembering that privacy is a spectrum rather than an absolute claim.
  • Pet owner: Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra or the eufy S1 Pro can reduce floor-cleaning work, while the eufy S350 helps monitor pets indoors. No robot is pet-proof; cords, toys, hair, and accidents still require preparation.
  • Large home: Consider a premium robot dock, a carefully planned Wi-Fi or wired network, Lutron lighting, and a central control panel. Space for docks, hubs, and service access matters.
  • Smart-home hobbyist: Aqara Hub M3 offers multi-protocol experimentation, while Home Assistant Green provides the broadest control and automation flexibility at the cost of more setup.
  • Most impressive demonstration: The Aqara U200, SwitchBot S10, eufy S1 Pro, Flic Twist, Hue Twilight, and Brisk It Origin 580 AI show the most distinctive ideas of the 2024 generation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Matter guarantee that every smart-home gadget works with every ecosystem?

No. Matter can improve interoperability, but the device still needs a compatible Matter controller, and Thread products need a Thread Border Router. Advanced features may remain available only in the manufacturer’s app or native ecosystem. In 2024, cameras and several advanced appliance functions were especially dependent on vendor platforms.

Which smart-home products require professional installation?

Thermostats may require HVAC expertise, in-wall switches require electrical knowledge, floodlight cameras may require outdoor electrical work, and plumbing-connected robot cleaners need a suitable water supply and drain. Smart locks are usually retrofit-friendly, but the deadbolt must fit and the door must be mechanically aligned.

What is the best smart-home gadget for a renter?

The Echo Spot, a tabletop Echo Hub, Philips Hue lighting, and other plug-in products avoid permanent alterations. The Aqara U200 may work for some renters if the existing deadbolt is compatible and the landlord permits it.

Which products avoid a standard monthly camera subscription?

The eufy Indoor Cam S350 supports local microSD recording and basic functions without a standard monthly fee, but some cloud thumbnails and HomeBase features may involve additional charges. Ring and Arlo place several advanced security features behind their subscription plans.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can smart-home devices work during an internet outage?

Some local controls and automations can continue, but remote access, cloud history, notifications, and voice assistants may stop working. Always check local-control behavior for the exact product and keep physical controls or keys for critical functions.

Are AI smart-home features worth paying for?

Only when the feature solves a specific problem. AI can assist with floor recognition, cooking guidance, camera alerts, laundry sensing, or thermostat diagnostics, but it can misidentify objects or conditions. Treat it as an automation aid, not a guarantee.

The Bottom Line

The best smart-home gadget of 2024 depends on the physical problem you want to solve. Choose the Echo Hub for visible control, the Aqara U200 for a powerful retrofit lock, the Nest Learning Thermostat for comfort and energy management, Lutron Caséta for dependable lighting, Home Assistant Green for local-first control, or a premium robot cleaner when reducing floor maintenance is worth the dock space and upkeep.

Before buying, verify the ecosystem, hub, wiring, plumbing, subscription, privacy, and service requirements. In a remodel or new build, planning those details early is often more important than choosing the gadget with the most impressive specification sheet.
