20 Bedroom Curtain Ideas to Inspire Your Space

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bedroom curtains are both a decorating decision and a light-control decision. They can soften a window, protect daytime privacy, filter glare, add color and texture, and help create a darker environment for people who are sensitive to light or sleep during the day.

Bedroom curtains can do more than cover a window. The right combination of fabric, fullness, hardware, and lining can soften a hard window edge, improve daytime privacy, control glare, and create a darker sleeping environment. If you are sensitive to light or sleep during the day, reducing unwanted brightness may make the room more comfortable, but no curtain guarantees better sleep.

Use the ideas below as a visual starting point. For each one, consider both the appearance and the practical job the treatment needs to perform: filtering daylight, blocking light, adding privacy, framing the bed, dividing space, or hiding storage.

20 bedroom curtain ideas

1. Layer sheer curtains with blackout panels

Put a translucent or sheer layer closest to the glass and heavier curtains on the outer rod or track. Open the sheer panels during the day for filtered light and a measure of privacy, then close the outer panels at night.

  • ENERGY SMART: Triple weave blackout fabric balances room temperature by insulating against summer heat and winter chill. Protect your furniture, floors, and artwork from the ravages of the sun, the drapes will pay for themselves off over time.
  • GOOD TO GO: Thread trimmed and wrinkle-free, ring (1.6-inch inner diameter) fits easily with standard curtain rods. All sets for you to put them up right away.
  • EASY TO MAINTAIN: NICETOWN blackout curtains are made to last. Machine washable in cold water, tumble dry. Quick ironing or steam clean when needed. Visiting the NICETOWN store, find out your favorite curtains.

This is one of the most flexible bedroom arrangements because each layer can operate independently. It is also useful for street-facing windows: sheers soften the view during the day, while lined outer panels provide greater privacy after dark. Check the construction of the outer panels rather than assuming that the word “blackout” guarantees complete darkness. Side gaps, the top of the window, and light passing through the fabric itself all affect the result.

Good for: bedrooms that need both daytime brightness and nighttime light control.

Practical note: Use a double curtain rod or double track designed to carry two separate layers. A standard single rod should not automatically be treated as a two-layer system.

Shopping note: If darkness is the priority, compare blackout curtains for bedroom by dimensions, liner construction, mounting position, and likely side and top gaps—not just by the product title. For the lighter inner layer, compare sheer curtains for bedroom with the same attention to finished width and length.

2. Mount the curtain track at the ceiling

A ceiling-mounted track creates a clean vertical line from the ceiling toward the floor. It can make a window treatment feel taller and is especially effective when you want curtains to run across a wide wall rather than stop at the window frame.

This approach also works for room dividers, wardrobe screens, and canopy-style arrangements. Before installation, identify the ceiling material and any framing behind it. A track carrying thick, full-length curtains can place considerable load on its fixings.

Good for: rooms with low-looking windows, tall drapery, wardrobes without doors, or flexible divisions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Practical note: Plan where the curtains will stack when open and confirm that the track, fixings, and ceiling can support the combined weight.

For a divider or tall treatment, a ceiling curtain track is the relevant hardware category; select one according to span, mounting surface, curtain weight, and whether the panels need to draw from one or both sides.

3. Extend the rod beyond the window frame

Install the rod wider than the window so the opened curtains stack beside the glass instead of covering part of it. As a starting point, allow roughly 6 to 12 inches beyond each side where the wall and hardware permit, then adjust for the window width, trim, radiator, furniture, and curtain stack-back.

The result is a more generous-looking window and a treatment that exposes more glass when open. It is particularly useful when a relatively small window sits on a broad wall.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Good for: visually enlarging a small window and maximizing available daylight.

Practical note: Measure the clear wall space on both sides. A rod that extends into a corner, door swing, or bedside table may be less practical than a shorter one.

4. Choose floor-length neutral drapes

Cream, oatmeal, warm white, taupe, and soft gray panels create a quiet backdrop that works with many bedding colors, rugs, and wall finishes. Neutral curtains are a dependable choice when the room already contains strong artwork, patterned bedding, or colorful furniture.

For a more finished appearance, decide whether the panels should just touch the floor, lightly break at the floor, or stop slightly above it. The best choice depends on cleaning requirements, flooring, and whether the room needs a crisp or relaxed look.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Good for: calm, adaptable bedrooms and updates where the curtains need to coordinate with existing furnishings.

Practical note: Neutral color does not tell you how much light the fabric blocks. Check whether the panel is lined, room-darkening, or blackout.

5. Use saturated color as the focal point

Deep blue, forest green, terracotta, ochre, or plum curtains can turn the window into an intentional color block. This is an effective way to add personality without repainting the entire room.

Repeat a small amount of the curtain color in a pillow, throw, artwork, or bedside accessory. The repetition does not need to be exact; a related tone is usually enough to make the color feel connected to the rest of the room.

Practical note: Order or inspect a fabric sample where possible. Colors can appear substantially different in daylight, warm artificial light, and shadow.

6. Add linen-look texture

Linen and linen-look panels soften the hard geometry of a window and add a relaxed, tactile quality. Slubby texture suits natural, coastal, Scandinavian, and contemporary rooms, while a heavier woven appearance can feel more substantial.

Texture alone does not provide reliable light control. If the bedroom needs darkness, choose a lined or blackout-backed version, or combine the decorative panels with a blind.

Good for: bedrooms that feel visually hard or overly smooth.

Practical note: Check washing instructions, shrinkage guidance, and whether the fabric is intended to hang with a relaxed drape or a more tailored finish.

7. Try velvet for a cocooning effect

Velvet or velvet-look curtains add visual weight and a plush surface. They suit traditional, glamorous, moody, and hotel-inspired bedrooms, and their substantial appearance can make a bed wall feel more enveloping.

Heavier curtains may contribute to a warmer or quieter-feeling room, but the degree of insulation or sound absorption depends on the specific fabric, lining, fit, and surrounding construction. Treat those effects as possible benefits rather than guaranteed performance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Good for: dramatic bedrooms and rooms that need more visual softness and weight.

Practical note: Confirm that the rod, brackets, and wall fixings are rated for the finished curtain weight, especially across a wide span.

8. Pair a Roman shade with side panels

A Roman shade handles light at the glass while stationary or operable side panels frame the window and add softness. This gives you the tailored appearance of a shade without making the entire window treatment look purely functional.

It is particularly useful in a small bedroom where a full wall of moving fabric would crowd furniture or reduce the usable walkway. Choose an inside-mount shade when the recess is suitable, or an outside-mount shade when you need more coverage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Good for: compact bedrooms and windows where decorative framing is wanted without deep curtain stacks.

Practical note: Coordinate the shade and curtain depths so they do not collide with handles, window vents, radiators, or furniture.

9. Combine a blackout roller blind with decorative curtains

Use the roller blind for the primary darkening function and the curtains to frame the window, add color, and soften the room. The blind can remain down when the curtains are open, keeping the window treatment visually simple while preserving light control.

This arrangement separates function from decoration: if your style changes later, you may be able to replace the curtains without replacing the blind.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Good for: small rooms, modern bedrooms, and windows where bulky layered curtains would interfere with furniture.

  • Care Instructions: Our room darkening blackout curtain machine washable, do not bleach, iron at low temperature settings

Practical note: Distinguish between inside-mount and outside-mount measurements. The blind must cover the necessary glass and gaps, while the decorative curtains need enough width to frame rather than bunch awkwardly.

A cordless blackout roller blind can be a compact option, particularly in homes with young children. Confirm the recess dimensions, mounting clearance, and actual light-control specification before buying.

10. Use matching curtains on a pair of windows

Treat two windows as one composition with identical panels, a continuous rod or track, and a shared color story. This prevents the wall from looking fragmented and works well behind a centered bed or between matching nightstands.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the windows are not identical, matching curtains can still unify them, but measure each opening separately. Differences in sill height, trim, or wall depth may require careful bracket placement.

Good for: bedrooms with symmetrical windows or a bed centered between two openings.

Practical note: Confirm that a continuous rod will not sag across the span. Add a properly positioned center support where the hardware requires one.

11. Emphasize a tall, narrow window with vertical drapery

Hang long panels from above the window and let them reach the floor to reinforce the room’s vertical lines. The eye is drawn upward along the fabric, giving the window wall a taller, more finished appearance without claiming to change the actual ceiling height.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the pattern and header relatively simple if the window is narrow. Too much fullness or a large-scale print can overwhelm the opening.

Good for: tall, narrow windows and bedrooms where the window wall needs stronger vertical emphasis.

Practical note: Check the location of handles, vents, and any nearby furniture before choosing a full-length track or rod.

12. Choose a pattern that echoes the bedding

A subtle stripe, botanical print, check, or geometric motif can connect the window to the duvet or accent pillows. Rather than duplicating every pattern, match one color family and let the scales differ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For example, a small botanical curtain can echo the green in a quilt without repeating the quilt’s entire design. This creates coordination without making the room feel overly themed.

Good for: bedrooms that need a more intentional relationship between the bed and window.

Practical note: Look at the full pattern repeat before ordering enough width. The pattern may look different when gathered than it does on a flat sample.

13. Make the curtains the only bold pattern

Keep the walls, bedding, and upholstery relatively calm, then let a patterned curtain act as the statement element. This can create a noticeable room refresh without remodeling, which is useful for renters or anyone working with an existing neutral scheme.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use plain or subtly textured bedding to give the eye somewhere to rest. If the curtains are already busy, repeat only one quiet color elsewhere rather than introducing several competing accents.

Good for: low-commitment bedroom updates and rooms with neutral furniture.

Practical note: Confirm the pattern’s orientation and repeat before deciding whether the panels will be stationary, draw fully open, or cover a wide wall.

14. Choose soft white sheers for an airy room

Soft white sheers allow daylight to remain present while filtering direct brightness and providing some daytime privacy. They create a lighter appearance than lined drapery and can make a room feel less visually enclosed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sheers are not a substitute for blackout coverage when the bedroom faces street lighting or the occupant is sensitive to light. Layer them with room-darkening or blackout panels when nighttime darkness matters.

Good for: bright bedrooms, private upper-floor windows, and rooms where full darkness is not required.

Practical note: Check the view from outside after dark. When the room is lit and the exterior is dark, sheer fabric may provide little or no nighttime privacy.

15. Install a double curtain rod for independent layers

A double rod places sheers behind heavier curtains without sewing the panels together. It is a straightforward hardware solution for the layered look, provided the wall has enough clearance for both fabrics to move freely.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before purchasing, check the rod diameter, total span, bracket projection, wall type, and combined weight of both layers. Thick curtains may need stronger brackets or a track system instead of a lightweight decorative rod.

Good for: anyone implementing separate sheer and blackout layers.

Practical note: Use a double curtain rod for bedroom only after confirming its span, bracket spacing, projection, rod diameter, and supported weight.

16. Use curtains to hide an open wardrobe

Ceiling-mounted or wall-mounted curtains can screen clothing racks, open shelving, or a dressing area. Unlike a permanent wall or built-in door, the curtain can be pulled aside when you need access and closed when you want a calmer view.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a relatively robust track if the curtain will be opened frequently. A full-height panel can also visually connect the wardrobe screen to the main window treatment.

Good for: small bedrooms, open wardrobes, rented homes, and dressing zones without doors.

Practical note: Leave enough clearance for clothing and shelving so the fabric does not snag or rub against stored items.

17. Create a soft divider in a shared bedroom

A curtain on a ceiling track, wall track, or suitable wire can create a flexible boundary around a sleeping or changing area. It can help divide a shared bedroom, studio apartment, guest room, or bedroom that doubles as a workspace.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use opaque fabric when visual privacy matters. Sheer fabric can define zones while preserving light, but it will not provide the same privacy as a lined panel.

Good for: shared rooms and multipurpose spaces that need an adjustable division rather than permanent construction.

Practical note: Secure the track to an appropriate structural surface and keep a clear route around the divider, especially near doors and egress paths.

18. Frame the bed with curtains for a canopy effect

Run a track around the bed or position panels at the head and sides to create a cocoon-like sleeping zone. This gives some of the visual drama of a canopy bed without replacing the bed frame.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Substantial curtains can also soften the view and may reduce some light or sound reaching the bed, but those effects vary with fabric, coverage, gaps, and the room itself. Do not seal the area so tightly that ventilation or safe access is compromised.

Practical note: Use securely mounted hardware, keep the opening accessible, and avoid arrangements that create a hazard around heaters, lights, or electrical equipment.

19. Use a tailored valance or upholstered cornice

A shallow valance or upholstered cornice can conceal curtain hardware and make a layered treatment look deliberately finished. It is a useful top treatment when the rod, track, or shade mechanism is visually distracting.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A simple, tailored shape suits traditional and transitional rooms, while a lightly upholstered cornice can introduce another layer of color or pattern without adding much fabric at the sides.

Good for: formal bedrooms and layered treatments where the mechanics need to be hidden.

Practical note: Confirm that the top treatment does not interfere with the operation of the curtains, shade, window, or ventilation.

20. Mix a simple blind with a contrasting curtain color

Use a neutral blind for everyday light control and a contrasting curtain color to add personality. The blind handles the functional work at the glass while the curtains frame the opening and establish the room’s palette.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is a particularly adaptable approach because the decorative layer can be changed later without replacing the blind. Try a warm neutral blind with deep green curtains, a white shade with terracotta panels, or a charcoal blind with soft ochre fabric.

Good for: bedrooms where function and decoration need to be selected separately.

Practical note: Make sure the blind and curtains do not compete for the same operating space, especially at handles, window seats, radiators, and bedside furniture.

How to choose the right bedroom curtain type

Start with the required light level

Window treatments are commonly described as sheer, semi-sheer, room-darkening, or blackout, but these labels represent different degrees of light filtration. “Blackout” is not a universal performance guarantee: products sold under that description can produce noticeably different results.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you need a genuinely dark bedroom, inspect:

  • the fabric and liner construction;
  • whether the panel is lined on the room side or has a separate blackout backing;
  • the total finished width and height;
  • how far the rod or track extends beyond the opening;
  • gaps at the sides, top, and bottom; and
  • whether the installation is inside-mount or outside-mount.

A roller blind or shade may handle light at the glass more precisely, while curtains provide softness and coverage beyond the glass. Layering both is often more practical than expecting one fabric to solve every problem.

Choose the treatment around the room’s constraints

  • Small bedroom: consider a roller blind with side panels, or mount curtains so they stack outside the glass.
  • Shared or multipurpose room: use a ceiling track and opaque curtains as a flexible divider.
  • Street-facing window: use daytime sheers for privacy, then close the heavier layer at night.
  • Low-looking window: mount the rod or track higher, provided the wall and trim allow it.
  • Heavy fabric: select brackets and fixings for the actual combined weight, not just the rod length.
  • Home with young children: prefer cordless blinds or designs with cords inaccessible to children.

How to measure before buying

  1. Measure the window opening. Record the width and height, including the position of trim, handles, vents, and any sill.
  2. Measure the wall around the window. Check how far the rod can extend on each side before meeting a corner, door, cabinet, or adjacent window.
  3. Choose the mounting position. Decide between inside-mount, outside-mount, wall-mounted, and ceiling-mounted hardware. Ceiling and high wall mounting can create a taller visual line, but the fixing surface must be suitable.
  4. Plan the finished length. Measure from the actual rod or track position to the point where the curtain should end. Do not measure only from the top of the window unless that is where the hardware will sit.
  5. Calculate fullness. A panel needs more fabric than the window width to create gathers. Follow the curtain maker’s fullness guidance, and account for how much fabric will stack beside the glass when open.
  6. Allow for hardware. Check bracket projection, rod diameter, ring or eyelet clearance, center supports, and the space needed for two layers.

For a DIY installation, gather the appropriate curtain rod brackets, wall anchors, rings, and measuring tape rather than treating the rod alone as the complete installation system. The right fixing depends on whether you are working with solid masonry, timber, plasterboard, or another substrate.

Installation details that affect the finished result

  • Secure the fixing surface: use suitable anchors or fix into framing where possible. Heavy velvet, lined blackout curtains, and wide spans need more support than lightweight sheers.
  • Keep layers independent: a double rod or double track should allow the front and back curtains to open without catching each other.
  • Check the stack-back: open curtains should not block the most useful part of the glass or collide with furniture.
  • Consider the gap above the window: a curtain can still allow a bright strip of light through the top if the rod or track sits too far below the ceiling or the panel is too short.
  • Keep fabric away from hazards: maintain clearance from heaters, lamps, outlets, and moving window hardware.
  • Address cord safety: exposed blind cords can be hazardous to children. Prefer cordless designs or keep cords inaccessible, and follow the product’s safety instructions.
  • Do not overclaim performance: insulation, noise reduction, UV blocking, energy savings, and complete blackout depend on the specific product and installation. Use a manufacturer specification or independent test if one of those characteristics is important to your decision.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do blackout curtains make a bedroom completely dark?

Blackout curtains can reduce light substantially, but products sold as blackout do not all perform identically. Check the fabric and liner, finished coverage, mounting position, and gaps at the sides and top. A blind or shade behind the curtains may provide more reliable coverage at the glass.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I put sheer and blackout curtains on the same window?

Yes. A double rod or double track lets you operate the sheer and heavier curtain independently. Check the hardware’s span, bracket projection, rod diameter, and combined weight rating before installation.

How far should bedroom curtains extend past the window?

Mounting the rod or track wider than the window lets the panels stack beside the glass when open. Roughly 6 to 12 inches beyond each side can be a starting point, but available wall space, trim, corners, furniture, and the curtain stack-back should determine the final measurement.

Are cordless bedroom blinds safer around children?

Cordless blinds are generally the preferable choice in homes with young children because exposed blind cords can create a hazard. Follow the product’s safety instructions and keep any cords or operating components inaccessible.

The Bottom Line

The most adaptable bedroom curtain solution is usually a coordinated system rather than a single panel: use sheers or a blind for daytime control, a properly lined outer layer for nighttime darkness, and hardware sized for the combined weight. Then choose the color, texture, length, and mounting position that support the room’s visual goal.
