Vicks publishes features and performance specifications for the VDT972; Tom’s Guide separately named the Femometer DMT 2032 its value pick in a 2025 review. The useful distinction is speed claims and added features versus an independently reported timing observation.
How the two models compare
| Model | Reading-time evidence | Features or limits established by the cited source |
|---|---|---|
| Vicks RapidRead VDT972 | Vicks says readings are “as fast as 2 seconds.” This is a manufacturer claim, not an independently timed result. | Vicks lists a flexible tip, measurement-site selection and last-reading memory. Its product page describes use for oral, rectal or underarm readings; follow the device manual and labeling. |
| Femometer DMT 2032 | Tom’s Guide reported an average of 57 seconds in its observations in a 2025 review. That is the publication’s observation, not a timing test for this article. | Tom’s Guide identifies it as its value thermometer and says it lacks a backlight. Other feature details are not stated in the cited review. |
Current prices and stock were not verified, so check the exact model and seller listing before buying. A “fast” claim and a review’s observed timing are not directly equivalent: the manufacturers’ stated conditions and Tom’s Guide’s test protocol are not established here.
Vicks RapidRead VDT972: flexible tip and site selection
The Vicks VDT972 is a predictive, battery-powered thermometer intended for home use. The FDA filing describes it for oral, rectal or underarm temperature measurement and all ages. Vicks lists a flexible tip, site selection and memory for the last reading on its product page. A flexible tip may be more comfortable, but site and age suitability still depend on the device’s instructions.
Vicks’ “as fast as 2 seconds” wording is a best-case manufacturer statement, not a promise that every reading will finish in two seconds. The owner’s manual defines operating conditions and accuracy specifications. It gives an accuracy of ±0.2°F in a water bath between 93.2°F and 109.4°F at a room temperature of 71°F. That is a manufacturer water-bath specification, not independent clinical validation or a guarantee for every use condition.

Femometer DMT 2032: a value pick with a longer observed reading
Tom’s Guide named the Femometer DMT 2032 its value thermometer in a 2025 review. The publication reported an average reading time of 57 seconds in its observations and noted that the thermometer has no backlight. That timing belongs to Tom’s Guide’s review; it should not be treated as a universal result or compared as if it used Vicks’ manufacturer-stated “as fast as” figure under the same conditions.
Choose by intended use, not speed alone
Before choosing a stick thermometer, check the labeling for the person and measurement site you intend to use. A device cleared or described for one set of sites is not automatically appropriate for another. For example, FDA documentation for Berrcom DT007/DT008 distinguishes home use for oral and axillary readings from hospital use for oral, axillary and rectal readings; it says rectal measurement is not for multi-patient home use. That example is a reason to follow each model’s own instructions, not evidence about the Femometer’s or Vicks’ labeling.

- Practical Design: This indoor room thermometer features a tabletop stand and a magnetic back, place the temperature monitor on your counter or fridge; °F/°C selector; Includes 1 AAA battery
- Comfort: Consider a flexible tip if comfort matters. Consumer Reports notes that flexible types may be more comfortable; its buying guide recommends centering the choice on product type and the user’s needs.
- Measurement site: Confirm that the instructions explicitly support the site you plan to use and the intended user.
- Reading time: Separate a manufacturer’s best-case statement from a third party’s observed timing; neither number alone tells you how long every reading will take.
- Display and memory: A backlight can matter in dim rooms, while stored readings can help with recall. The VDT972 lists last-reading memory; Tom’s Guide says the DMT 2032 lacks a backlight.
- Accuracy figures: Check what was measured and under which conditions. A controlled water-bath specification is not the same as a clinical comparison across users and measurement sites.
What this comparison can—and cannot—establish
The available sources support a feature-and-evidence comparison of these two models, not a ranking based on a shared test protocol. They do not establish the exact products, test methods, prices or firsthand evaluations behind a separate article titled “The 2 Best Inexpensive Digital Thermometers, Tested & Reviewed.” Treat the Vicks and Femometer findings as attributed product information and third-party coverage, rather than results from a head-to-head test.
