17 Plants That Can Grow Well Together in a Vegetable Garden

There is no universal set of plants that should “always” grow side-by-side. Companion planting is most useful when a pairing solves a specific problem—such as providing climbing support or shade, using space efficiently, covering soil, or creating habitat for beneficial insects. The 17 plants below are practical options, not guaranteed partnerships: results depend on climate, variety, timing, spacing, and care.

“Side-by-side” can mean sharing a bed or growing in nearby rows. Keep each crop’s light, water, and spacing needs in mind, and leave room for airflow.

How to choose companions that make sense

Pair plants by what they need or contribute, rather than by a chart label alone. The useful mechanisms include physical support, shade, soil cover, gradual nutrient cycling, staggered harvests, and habitat for beneficial insects. No pairing replaces crop rotation, adequate spacing, watering, or disease management.

  • Check growth and timing: A fast crop may be harvested before a slower neighbor needs the space. Tall crops can also shade low-growing plants, which helps only when the shaded crop tolerates it.
  • Match resources: Consider light, moisture, nutrient needs, root depth, and mature size.
  • Plan the layout: Allow for plant-tag spacing and airflow; arrange shade-sensitive crops accordingly.
  • Keep claims in proportion: Plant diversity can support beneficial insects and make host crops harder for some pests to find, but it does not guarantee pest control or a better harvest.

Extension guidance differs, and some traditional pairings have little direct evidence for improved yield. Oregon State Extension, for example, notes insufficient research for some popular scent-based pairings; Oklahoma State Extension cautions that broad claims about companion planting are not established.

17 plants to consider growing together

1–3. Corn, pole beans, and squash: the Three Sisters

This is a system of complementary roles rather than three plants that must be crowded together. Corn provides a climbing support for pole beans; beans fix nitrogen; and squash spreads across the ground, helping cover soil and limit moisture loss. Virginia Cooperative Extension describes these roles, and North Carolina Cooperative Extension notes the squash’s soil-covering and weed-suppressing benefits. Adapt the design and timing to local conditions instead of assuming any arrangement will thrive.

4–5. Corn and pole beans

Even without adding squash, corn and pole beans can share space: the stalks can support climbing beans, and beans can grow in corn’s shade. Oregon State Extension also notes that their roots occupy different depths. This can be a useful space-saving arrangement when the plants have room to mature.

6–7. Brassicas and legumes

Brassicas—such as cabbage-family crops—and legumes can be grown in a shared plan. Oregon State Extension explains that nitrogen becomes available over time as legume roots remain in the soil and decay. This is gradual nutrient cycling, not an immediate fertilizer effect from pulling up the legume and its roots.

8–9. Lettuce and a taller crop

Lettuce prefers cool conditions, so partial shade from a taller crop can be useful in warm weather. Oregon State Extension suggests using taller crops for shade; Maryland Extension recommends placing low-growing, shade-tolerant greens on the north side of corn, tomatoes, or eggplants. Treat this as a seasonal layout strategy, not a fixed rule for every garden.

10–11. Carrots and radishes

Sow long-season carrots and quicker-maturing radishes at the same time, then harvest the radishes before they crowd the carrots. Maryland Extension presents this as a way to use space while the slower crop is still developing. Follow local sowing guidance and thin or harvest as needed so carrots have room.

12–13. Tomatoes and carrots

Oregon State Extension lists carrots as compatible with tomatoes because tomato shade can benefit heat-sensitive carrots. The arrangement depends on season and bed layout: place carrots where they receive enough light, while avoiding a setup that leaves either crop crowded.

14–15. Tomatoes and basil

Tomatoes and basil are a familiar garden-and-kitchen combination, and Oregon State Extension lists them together. Its rationale includes that they grow well and taste good together; culinary compatibility is not proof that basil increases tomato yield or reliably repels pests.

16–17. Vegetables with flowering herbs or compact flowers

Flowering plants and herbs can add diversity and provide habitat or food for beneficial insects. Delaware Extension explains that diversity may disrupt some insects’ ability to find host plants. Maryland Extension describes specific examples involving thyme, onion, and nasturtium in relation to caterpillar damage in broccoli, and nasturtium and marigolds in relation to squash bugs and cucumber beetles. These are crop-specific examples, not evidence that any flower protects every nearby vegetable.

Marigold claims especially need care. Oklahoma State Extension says the broad claim that marigolds control nematodes and other insects is largely inaccurate. It reports that only some French marigold (Tagetes patula) varieties have shown nematode reduction, limited to their immediate root zones, with potentially inconsistent results. Maryland Extension mentions African and French marigolds in particular contexts; neither source supports treating all marigolds as general-purpose pest repellents.

What companion planting can—and cannot—promise

Some pairings have clear physical or scheduling advantages: beans can climb corn, squash can cover soil, and radishes can be harvested before carrots mature. Other benefits are more conditional. A diverse planting may support beneficial insects or disrupt pest host-finding, but that does not establish that every named pair reduces pests or improves yield.

Oklahoma State Extension states, “There is no significant data to prove the value of companion planting or intercropping,” while describing possible effects as uncertain. Delaware Extension discusses evidence for some benefits of garden diversity, particularly beneficial-insect support and disruption of pest host-finding. These points are compatible: evidence for particular ecological mechanisms does not prove that every traditional pairing works.
