Turn a backyard into an Easter play space with a mix of egg hunts, movement games, nature spotting and crafts. Keep the layout simple: choose activities that fit the group’s ages, mobility and available space, set clear boundaries, and leave room for water and rest breaks.

Egg hunts for different ages and abilities

Start by deciding where children may search, how challenging the hiding places should be, and whether everyone will hunt together. For a mixed-age group, make some eggs easy to spot and reserve more concealed locations for older children. Accessible routes and reachable eggs help more children take part.

1. Classic backyard egg hunt

Hide eggs around a defined area, varying their visibility to suit the children. Keep toddler-level eggs in plain sight and avoid locations that require climbing, reaching over hazards or moving garden equipment.

2. Clue-to-the-basket hunt

Place a clue inside each egg. Each clue points to the next location, with the final one leading to a hidden basket. Use pictures for children who are not reading yet and short riddles for older readers. Hersheyland’s hunt ideas describe this clue-to-clue format.

3. Color hunt

Assign each child a color, or give them color cards to match. They search only for eggs of their assigned color, which can make the game easier to follow for younger children and reduce competition over the same finds.

4. Glow hunt

For a dusk or evening version, use glow-in-the-dark eggs or lights and keep children within a clearly marked, well-lit area. Check the ground beforehand for uneven surfaces and obstacles, and supervise closely in low light.

5. Picture-clue hunt

Draw a simple picture of the next hiding place—such as a tree, bench or planter—and put it in each egg. Choose familiar landmarks that children can recognize without needing to read.

6. Riddle trail

Write short riddles that lead older children from one safe hiding place to another. Keep each clue specific enough to solve without sending participants beyond the hunt boundary or toward a no-go area.

Dan&Darci Egg Squishy Painting Kit - Arts & Crafts for Girls and Boys
  • Everything you need to paint your own cute squishy easter eggs: Complete kit includes 6 blank super-squishy eggs, 2 paintbrushes, and 6 fabric paint vials.
  • Super-squishy slow-rising material: The eggs are made from premium materials to ensure a feel-good squeeze and extra slow-rising motion.
  • Durable paint: Includes innovative paint to ensure the color sticks well onto the squishes and doesn't rub off. A great craft activity and art project for the whole family.
  • A fun gift for all ages: Great set for individual play or as a group activity.

7. Accessible egg zone

Set aside a smaller search area with a level route and eggs placed within easy reach. Paved surfaces may help wheelchair users navigate; audible eggs can support children with visual impairments. A helper can offer assistance without taking over the search.

8. Age-separated hunt zones

Give younger and older children separate areas or different start times. This lets younger participants search at a manageable level while older children get a more challenging hunt.

9. Special prize egg

Add one distinctive egg with a larger prize or a voucher. Explain the rules before the search begins, including whether children may keep looking after finding it and how the prize will be shared if several children find it together.

10. Cooperative egg collection challenge

Give each participant a basket or bag and set a modest shared target—for example, collecting a certain number as a group. The aim is to reach the total together, not to see who can gather the most. Keep spare containers available for guests who arrive without one.

Active Easter games for the yard

Movement games work best where there is a clear, uncluttered route. Choose a short course, mark the start and finish, and adjust the pace to the children taking part.

11. Egg-and-spoon race

Have each participant carry an egg on a spoon along a short, level course. Use a hard-boiled or reusable egg, and shorten the distance or allow walking for younger children. The race format appears in Coles’ Easter activity ideas and the Woodland Trust’s outdoor Easter activities.

12. Bunny-hop relay

Divide children into teams and mark a route between clear points. Players hop to the turnaround and back, tagging the next teammate. Keep the route short and make walking an acceptable alternative.

13. Egg roll

Choose a clear patch of ground and have children roll eggs toward a finish line or target. Set the rolling direction and keep spectators out of the path so nobody is in the way of a rolling egg.

Quiet, nature-based and creative activities

These options suit smaller yards, calmer moments or children who would rather observe and make things than race. Nature activities should leave wildlife and its habitat undisturbed.

14. Nature egg-shape search

Ask children to spot oval shapes in leaves, petals, pebbles or clouds. They can point them out or draw what they see rather than picking plants or disturbing animals. The Woodland Trust advises leaving nesting birds, nests and eggs undisturbed.

15. Egg-hunt scavenger list

Make a short checklist of safe things to spot between egg finds, such as a yellow flower, a smooth stone or a bird seen from a distance. Keep the list focused on looking, not collecting. The National Park Service’s outdoor guidance suggests outdoor scavenger hunts and adult accompaniment for children exploring outside.

16. Decorate eggs outdoors

Set up a protected craft station on a stable surface, with age-appropriate supplies and room to work. Children can decorate eggs with spring-inspired patterns, then leave them to dry away from the running games.

17. Easter craft and coloring break

Offer coloring pages or a simple craft as a quieter alternative or a cooldown between activities. Place the station where adults can supervise it and where supplies will not obstruct paths or play areas.

Plan the activity around the group and the yard

There is no single best activity for every backyard. Use these practical checks to choose a combination that fits your space and guests:

  • Age and challenge: Use visible eggs and picture clues for younger children; save riddles and harder hiding places for older readers.
  • Mobility and access: Favor level routes, reachable egg locations and a designated accessible search zone. Offer help where wanted.
  • Energy and space: Races and relays need a clear path. Nature spotting and crafts need less room and offer a calmer option.
  • Time and weather: A short hunt can pair well with a craft break. Spring weather can change, so plan a rain date or an indoor backup.
  • Supplies: A hunt can use reusable fillable eggs and containers you already have. Nature spotting needs little equipment.

Set boundaries and supervise outdoor play

Before children start, show them where the activity takes place and which areas are off limits. The Hallmark hunt-planning guide recommends establishing boundaries and identifying no-go areas in advance.

Young children need close supervision in the yard. The American Academy of Pediatrics’ yard-safety guidance advises regular hydration and sunscreen breaks, constant touch supervision around pools, hot tubs, ponds and other bodies of water, and securely anchored playground equipment with hazards checked. These activity ideas are not a substitute for checking the yard and supervising children. The National Park Service also recommends adult accompaniment and bringing water and snacks for outdoor exploration.
