17 Best Coffee Makers in 2024, According to a Former Barista: What Still Holds Up

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no single best coffee maker for every kitchen. The right choice depends on whether you want a large hands-off batch, a carefully controlled pour-over, a fast travel brewer, a pod system, or one machine that also handles iced coffee and tea. For most households, the strongest starting points are the Technivorm Moccamaster KBGV Select for premium automatic drip, the OXO Brew 9-Cup for programmable convenience, the CHEMEX Classic for manual pour-over, the AeroPress Original for speed and portability, the Keurig K-Supreme for K-Cup convenience, and the Nespresso VertuoPlus for coffee and espresso-style capsule drinks.

This is a historical 2024 buying guide, not a claim that every model below remains the newest or best option in 2026. The original roundup’s complete 17-item list and testing methodology were not reliably accessible, so verified manufacturer specifications are separated from category recommendations and current comparison candidates. No personal taste-test results are attributed to the writer.

Specifications are manufacturer-published unless otherwise noted. Prices, stock, included accessories, model names, and regional availability can change; verify those details before buying.

Quick picks: which of the 17 coffee makers fits you?

Use this table to narrow the field before comparing details. “Best for” describes the use case, not an objective claim that one brewer makes coffee everyone will prefer.

Model or brewer Best fit What stands out Main trade-off
Technivorm Moccamaster KBGV Select Premium automatic drip 1.25-liter/40-ounce capacity, 4–6 or 8–10 cup selector, approximately 4–6 minute brew time Higher purchase price and less hands-on control than pour-over
OXO Brew 9-Cup Coffee Maker Programmable daily drip Regulates brew time, water temperature, and volume; 197.6–204.8°F/92–96°C range Still needs fresh coffee, water, and periodic cleaning
Breville Precision Brewer Thermal Programmable precision drip Specialty-oriented brewing system with a thermal carafe More controls and cost than a basic drip machine
CHEMEX Classic Manual pour-over and presentation Borosilicate glass, 3-, 6-, 8-, and 10-cup sizes, bonded filter system Requires a grinder, kettle, measuring, and pouring technique
CHEMEX Ottomatic 2.0 CHEMEX flavor and appearance with automation One-button hot or iced brewing, 40-ounce tank, nine-point sprayhead More expensive and less portable than a Classic CHEMEX
AeroPress Original Fast single servings and travel Up to 10 ounces; immersion, air pressure, and micro-filtration in about two minutes Small serving size and disposable micro-filters
AeroPress Go Compact travel brewing Eight-ounce, one-cup travel system Smaller capacity than the Original XL
AeroPress Original XL Larger AeroPress servings 20-ounce capacity for approximately 2–4 cups Less compact and uses XL-size filters
Keurig K-Supreme Fast pod-based convenience MultiStream Technology, 6-, 8-, 10-, and 12-ounce sizes, Strong option, hot-over-ice mode, 66-ounce reservoir Recurring K-Cup purchases and a proprietary pod ecosystem
Nespresso VertuoPlus Coffee and espresso-style capsule drinks Barcode-recognizing capsules, Centrifusion extraction, automatic capsule handling Vertuo capsules are a separate ecosystem from K-Cups
Ninja CM401 Specialty Coffee Maker Grounds-based specialty-style flexibility A pod alternative for readers who want to use regular ground coffee Confirm current model specifications and included accessories
Ninja CP307 Hot and Cold Brewed System Hot coffee, iced coffee, and tea Hybrid beverage focus in one machine Exact availability and specifications require current verification
Café Specialty Grind & Brew Current grind-and-brew comparison Appears on the Specialty Coffee Association’s certified-home-brewer list Verify the exact regional model and current stock
GE Profile Smart Grind and Brew Connected grind-and-brew comparison Current SCA-listed home-brewer candidate Smart features may add complexity beyond basic drip
Braun MultiServe Plus Flexible automatic brewing comparison Current SCA-listed home-brewer candidate Check capacity, accessories, and model revision before purchase
Zwilling Enfinigy Drip Coffee Maker Design-conscious automatic drip comparison Current SCA-listed home-brewer candidate Availability can vary significantly by market
Fellow Aiden Precision-focused current comparison Current SCA-listed home-brewer candidate Verify current software, accessories, and regional availability

The SCA certified-home-brewer program is a useful neutral reference for models that have completed testing against criteria for brewing quality, consistency, and performance. Certification is evidence of compliance with that program’s requirements—not proof that every coffee drinker will prefer the taste.

#1 Best Overall
BLACK+DECKER 12-Cup Drip Coffee Maker with Vortex Brewing | 12-cup drip coffee maker with Vortex brewing for rich coffee extraction, programmable timer, Sneak-A-Cup and auto shutoff
  • 12-CUP DURALIFE GLASS CARAFE: The sturdy 12-cup* carafe has measurement markings for accurate filling and an easy-grip handle for comfortable pouring. *Cup equals approximately 5 ounces (varies by brewing technique).
  • SNEAK-A-CUP FEATURE TO PREVENT DRIPS: This feature temporarily stops the flow of coffee so you can pour your first cup before brewing ends without making a mess.
  • EASY-VIEW WATER WINDOW: The front-facing window shows you the exact amount of water that will turn into coffee, and the brew basket requires a standard paper coffee filter for proper operation.
  • DIGITAL CONTROLS WITH RUBBERIZED FEEL: Large, rubberized buttons give you full control of the coffeemaker, and the easy-read screen displays the clock, brew time, and programming options.
  • QUICKTOUCH PROGRAMMING WITH AUTO SHUTOFF: Easily program the 24-hour auto brew feature so you can wake up to a fresh pot of coffee or whenever you desire. 2-Hour Auto Shutoff for added safety and peace of mind with every use.

Automatic drip coffee makers

Automatic drip is the best category for people who want several cups with minimal intervention. You add water and coffee, start the cycle, and let the brewer manage distribution and timing. The meaningful differences are temperature control, water coverage, brew duration, batch size, carafe design, programmability, and how easy it is to obtain filters and replacement parts.

Technivorm Moccamaster KBGV Select: premium automatic drip

The Moccamaster KBGV Select is a strong premium-drip choice when you want a conventional batch brewer with a simple operating concept. The manufacturer’s instructions specify a 1.25-liter/40-ounce, 10-cup capacity, a selector for either 4–6 or 8–10 cups, an approximately 4–6 minute brew time, and automatic power-off after 100 minutes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those are specifications, not independent evidence that it tastes better than every competitor. Its appeal is the combination of a clearly defined brew volume, relatively short stated cycle, and straightforward controls. Choose it if you regularly brew a pot and value a durable-feeling, low-fuss workflow. Choose a manual brewer instead if measuring and pouring are part of the enjoyment, or a pod machine if one-cup speed matters more than batch brewing.

OXO Brew 9-Cup Coffee Maker: programmable everyday convenience

The OXO Brew 9-Cup is a sensible middle ground for households that want scheduled, automatic brewing without moving to a pod system. OXO says the brewer regulates brew time, water temperature, and volume, and lists a brewing temperature range of 197.6–204.8°F/92–96°C. OXO also identifies this model as recognized by the Specialty Coffee Association.

That combination makes the OXO a good fit for a daily routine: prepare the machine the night before, use whole beans or ground coffee, and brew a batch in the morning. It is not maintenance-free. Oils and mineral deposits still accumulate, and the quality of the result remains dependent on the coffee, grind, water, and dose.

Breville Precision Brewer Thermal: for more control than basic drip

The Breville Precision Brewer Thermal belongs in the specialty-drip conversation because its documented operating system is designed around programmable brewing rather than a single on/off cycle. The thermal carafe is useful for serving without leaving coffee on a hot plate, and the brewer is a reasonable option for people who want more control than a basic automatic machine provides.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not read “precision” as a guarantee of superior flavor. The official manual documents how the system operates; it does not establish that every user will prefer its coffee. Before buying, check which brew modes, filters, carafe, and accessories are included with the exact regional version.

Other automatic models worth comparing

The Café Specialty Grind & Brew, GE Profile Smart Grind and Brew, Braun MultiServe Plus, Zwilling Enfinigy Drip Coffee Maker, and Fellow Aiden are useful current comparison points because the SCA’s certified-home-brewer list includes models from those brands. They should not automatically be presented as the original 2024 roundup’s selections: the available research does not reliably establish that placement, and current model names and packages can change.

The same caution applies to the Mr. Coffee Perfect Brew, which also appears among current SCA-listed comparison models. Treat certification as one screening tool, then compare capacity, controls, grinder integration, carafe, cleaning requirements, and replacement-part availability.

Manual pour-over and immersion brewers

CHEMEX Classic: best for ritual, clarity, and visual design

The CHEMEX Classic is a manual pour-over brewer made from borosilicate glass. The Classic Series is available in 3-, 6-, 8-, and 10-cup sizes and is designed around CHEMEX’s bonded paper filters. The company’s brewing guidance calls for a medium-coarse grind.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its strengths are control and simplicity: you choose the coffee dose, water quantity, water temperature, pour pattern, and brewing time. That also describes the work involved. A CHEMEX is not automatically faster than an electric brewer, and it cannot compensate for stale coffee, inconsistent grinding, or an inaccurate pour.

Capacity labels deserve special attention. CHEMEX defines a “cup” as a 5-ounce portion, while other manufacturers use different serving conventions. A nominal 6-cup CHEMEX will not necessarily make six large American mugs. Estimate servings using the manufacturer’s ounces, not the cup number alone.

The glass is dishwasher-safe after removing the wooden or leather collar and rawhide tie. The filter paper is compostable according to the brand, but it remains a recurring supply. If you buy a Classic, budget for CHEMEX bonded filters rather than assuming generic paper will fit and behave identically.

CHEMEX Ottomatic 2.0: automated CHEMEX brewing

The Ottomatic 2.0 is a separate electric brewer, not simply a CHEMEX accessory. Its product information describes one-button hot or iced brewing. The manufacturer’s resources specify a 40-ounce water tank, a nine-point sprayhead, and a warming plate that automatically shuts off after 90 minutes in hot-brew mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is the logical choice for someone who likes the CHEMEX format but does not want to stand over a kettle. It still uses the CHEMEX filter geometry and still leaves you with glassware to rinse. It also takes more counter space and costs more than a basic manual Classic, so it makes sense only if the automation will actually be used.

AeroPress Original: fast, portable, single-cup brewing

The AeroPress Original combines immersion, air pressure, and micro-filtration. AeroPress says it can make up to a 10-ounce serving and that brewing and cleanup take about two minutes. The system can produce American-style, cold-brew-style, or espresso-style coffee; “espresso-style” should not be confused with a café espresso machine producing true pump espresso.

It is a strong match for small kitchens, offices, travelers, and people who dislike the sediment commonly associated with a French press. It is also forgiving in the sense that you can adjust dose, grind, steeping time, and pressure. The trade-off is a small serving and a process that remains manual. Keep the filter size matched to the model: AeroPress filters for the Original and Go are not the same purchase as XL filters.

AeroPress Go versus AeroPress Original XL

These are not interchangeable versions of the same use case. The AeroPress Go is an 8-ounce, one-cup travel system designed around compact packing. The AeroPress Original XL is a 20-ounce brewer for approximately 2–4 cups and is the better choice when one person wants a larger drink or two people want to share.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the Go when luggage space is the constraint. Choose the XL when capacity is the constraint. For a conventional multi-cup breakfast pot, neither is a direct replacement for an automatic drip machine.

Where a French press fits

A conventional French press remains a reasonable category choice for people who want a simple immersion brewer, a fuller-bodied cup, and no paper filter. The exact model should be selected only after checking current construction, size, replacement-screen availability, and cleaning requirements. The available research does not verify a specific French press as one of the original 17 picks, so this guide does not assign that status to a particular brand.

Pod and capsule machines

Keurig K-Supreme: the convenience-first option

The Keurig K-Supreme is built for fast, repeatable single servings. Keurig lists MultiStream Technology, 6-, 8-, 10-, and 12-ounce brew sizes, a Strong option, hot-over-ice brewing, travel-mug compatibility, and a 66-ounce dual-position reservoir. It is compatible with K-Cup pods and can also use ground coffee through the appropriate reusable filter.

The major advantage is workflow: select a pod, choose a size, and brew. The major cost is ongoing dependence on pods or compatible supplies. A reusable filter can reduce disposable waste and let you use ground coffee, but it adds filling and cleaning steps and does not turn the machine into a full manual brewer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Nespresso VertuoPlus: capsule coffee plus espresso-style formats

The VertuoPlus is aimed at people who want more than a conventional cup-size pod. Nespresso describes barcode-reading capsule recognition, Centrifusion extraction, automatic capsule handling, and multiple cup sizes. Its U.S. assistance information lists a 37.1-ounce removable water tank, 1,300 watts, 120-volt operation, and automatic shutoff after nine minutes.

Keurig and Nespresso are not equivalent systems. K-Supreme is built around K-Cup pods and several conventional coffee sizes; VertuoPlus reads Nespresso Vertuo capsule barcodes and supports a broader coffee-and-espresso-style format. Capsules are not interchangeable, and the continuing cost and availability of the required system should be part of the decision.

Specialty and hybrid coffee makers

Ninja CM401 Specialty Coffee Maker

The Ninja CM401 is a practical candidate for households that want an alternative to Keurig but prefer regular ground coffee. Indexed material associated with the historical roundup specifically mentions this model and positions it as a grounds-based specialty option.

Because product names, retailer packages, and included accessories can change, check the exact current CM401 listing before relying on a capacity, carafe, brew-mode, or accessory claim. The central buying question is whether you want the flexibility of grounds without committing to a capsule ecosystem.

Ninja CP307 Hot and Cold Brewed System

The CP307 is a plausible hybrid choice for a household that wants hot coffee, iced coffee, and tea from one machine. It appeared in indexed 2024 coffee-maker material, but the exact original article placement and current U.S. product page were not independently verified in the research available for this guide.

That uncertainty matters because hybrid machines can vary in included baskets, vessels, drink modes, and cleaning instructions. Confirm the current manual and package contents before treating it as a direct substitute for either a dedicated drip brewer or a pod machine.

How to choose the right coffee maker

1. Start with your actual drink routine

  • One large morning batch: choose automatic drip and prioritize capacity, a thermal carafe, scheduling, and replacement parts.
  • One careful cup: choose a CHEMEX or AeroPress if you are willing to grind, measure, and control the process.
  • Fast individual servings: choose Keurig or Nespresso, accepting the recurring pod or capsule system.
  • Hot and iced drinks: investigate a hybrid such as the Ninja CP307, but verify current modes and accessories.
  • Whole-bean convenience: compare grind-and-brew models, while remembering that an integrated grinder adds cleaning and another potential failure point.

2. Compare capacity using ounces, not cup counts

Manufacturers do not use one universal definition of a cup. CHEMEX uses 5-ounce portions; other brewers may use different serving conventions. A machine advertised as 10 cups may not fill ten 10-ounce travel mugs.

Measure the amount you normally drink, then allow for guests. A 40-ounce brewer may be adequate for several small servings but insufficient for a household that fills large insulated mugs. Conversely, a large reservoir adds counter depth and can leave water sitting in the machine if you usually brew one cup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Decide between thermal and glass carafes

A thermal carafe lets you hold coffee without depending on a hot plate. That is useful for serving over a longer breakfast and avoids keeping the brewed coffee directly above heat. A glass carafe makes the remaining volume visible and may be easier to replace or clean, but the hot plate becomes part of the holding method.

Neither design preserves flavor indefinitely. Coffee continues to change after brewing, so choose the carafe for your serving routine rather than expecting it to maintain a fresh cup for hours.

4. Treat temperature, time, and water distribution as real differentiators

Good automatic brewing is more than heating water and dripping it over grounds. Temperature stability, brew time, how evenly water reaches the coffee bed, and whether the machine manages a bloom can affect extraction. The SCA certification program offers a useful third-party screen for models that have completed its testing, but certification is not a personal taste ranking.

For manual brewing, you supply much of that control yourself. A suitable burr coffee grinder produces more consistent grounds than a basic blade grinder, while a scale helps repeat the coffee-to-water ratio. A gooseneck kettle is especially useful for controlled pour-over flow, although it is not mandatory for every manual brewer.

5. Check the filter and supply ecosystem

Paper filters are not interchangeable by appearance alone. CHEMEX’s bonded filters are part of that brewer’s design, and AeroPress models require their own standard or XL micro-filters. Pod systems create a different supply commitment: K-Cups and Nespresso Vertuo capsules belong to separate ecosystems.

Before buying, search for the exact replacement filter, pod, capsule, and carafe model—not merely the brand name. A discounted machine is less attractive if its required consumables or replacement parts are difficult to obtain in your region.

6. Budget for coffee quality and maintenance

The brewer is only one part of the cup. Fresh specialty coffee beans, an appropriate grind, clean water, and accurate measurement can matter as much as moving from one midrange machine to another. Do not buy an expensive brewer while planning to neglect the grinder or use coffee that has been open for months.

Electric brewers, pod machines, and capsule machines also need regular care. Follow the exact manual for descaling, rinse removable parts, empty stale water when instructed, and clean the carafe or brew basket. Compatibility is important when purchasing a coffee maker descaler, water filter for coffee maker, or replacement coffee carafe; a generic product is not automatically suitable for every heating system, reservoir, or model.

7. Measure the counter and the workflow

Measure available width, depth, height under cabinets, and the space needed to open a reservoir or remove a carafe. A tall pod machine may fit under a cabinet only when closed. A CHEMEX needs a kettle and a place to pour; an AeroPress needs almost no permanent counter space; a grind-and-brew machine needs room for beans, grounds, and cleaning.

What the 2024 title does—and does not—tell you

“Best” in a former-barista roundup is not a universal laboratory grade. The complete original list, individual category labels, prices, and test conclusions were not reliably available for verification here. That means it would be misleading to claim that the writer personally tested all 17 machines or to repeat sensory judgments such as “best tasting,” “most consistent,” or “easiest to clean” without the original methodology.

The defensible takeaway is a decision framework. Moccamaster, OXO, and Breville represent automatic drip paths; CHEMEX and AeroPress represent manual control; Keurig and Nespresso represent different convenience ecosystems; and Ninja plus the SCA-listed models provide specialty, grind-and-brew, and hybrid comparison paths. Current availability in the United States and elsewhere may differ from the 2024 market, so verify the exact model and manufacturer support before ordering.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which coffee maker is best for most people?

For a hands-off batch, start with the OXO Brew 9-Cup or Technivorm Moccamaster KBGV Select. The OXO emphasizes programmable convenience and regulated brewing variables; the Moccamaster offers a defined 40-ounce batch, 4–6 or 8–10 cup selection, and an approximately 4–6 minute brew time. Neither is objectively best for every drinker.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a CHEMEX dishwasher-safe?

The CHEMEX glass is dishwasher-safe after removing the collar and rawhide tie. Its bonded paper filters are compostable according to the manufacturer, but they are a recurring supply and should be matched to the CHEMEX filter geometry.

Do Keurig and Nespresso pods work in the same machine?

No. The Keurig K-Supreme is designed for K-Cup pods, while the Nespresso VertuoPlus uses Vertuo capsules that the machine recognizes by barcode. Their capsules, brewing systems, beverage formats, and supply ecosystems are different.

Do I need a grinder for these coffee makers?

You can use preground coffee in many automatic brewers and pod machines do not require a grinder. A grinder is more important for CHEMEX and other pour-over methods, and it is useful when brewing with an AeroPress. A burr grinder generally offers more consistent grounds than a basic blade grinder.

Is the AeroPress Original the same size as the AeroPress Go and XL?

No. The Go is an 8-ounce, one-cup travel system; the Original makes up to 10 ounces; and the Original XL makes 20 ounces, approximately 2–4 cups. Filter sizes also differ, so buy standard or XL AeroPress filters for the correct model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Buy the Technivorm Moccamaster KBGV Select or OXO Brew 9-Cup for dependable automatic batch brewing, the CHEMEX Classic for hands-on pour-over, the AeroPress Go or Original for compact fast brewing, the Keurig K-Supreme for K-Cup convenience, and the Nespresso VertuoPlus for capsule coffee and espresso-style formats. If you want specialty or iced-drink flexibility, compare the Ninja models and current SCA-listed brewers—but verify today’s model, price, accessories, consumables, and replacement support rather than relying on a 2024 ranking.
