1. Water-painting race
Setting: Pavement or another suitable outdoor surface. Supplies: Cups of water or paintbrushes and water. Give each player a patch of pavement and a simple shape to paint, such as a star or a house. Players race to draw it with water before it evaporates. The pace depends on the weather, so treat this as a playful challenge rather than a timed test.
2. Sponge toss
Setting: Open yard. Supplies: One large sponge and a bucket of water. Partners toss the soaked sponge back and forth; after each successful catch, both take a small step farther apart. Keep throws gentle and below face level, and let players choose a comfortable distance.

3. Cup target knockdown
Setting: Yard or patio with a stable surface. Supplies: Lightweight plastic cups, a water squirter or damp sponges, and water. Stack or line up the cups, then take turns knocking them down with a small stream or a gentle sponge toss. Set the target where missed throws will not hit people, windows, or fragile objects.
4. Sprinkler freeze dance
Setting: A suitable yard with a sprinkler. Supplies: Sprinkler and music. Dance through the sprinkler while the music plays; when it pauses, freeze in place. Players can dance beside the spray or move at their own pace rather than running through it.
5. Sprinkler limbo
Setting: A nonslippery yard, away from pool decks. Supplies: Sprinkler. Take turns ducking under a gentle stream. Keep the stream low enough to be comfortable and make this a walking, not running, activity. Stop if the ground becomes slippery.

Relays work well for family gatherings because players can take turns and cheer for one another. Mark a clear route, give teams equal supplies, and use walking instead of running when that better suits the group.

6. Sponge relay
Setting: Yard with a clear lane. Supplies: Two buckets per team and a large sponge. Place a full bucket at the start and an empty one at the finish. A player soaks the sponge, carries it to the empty bucket, squeezes out the water, and returns or passes the sponge to the next player. For a line-based variation, pass the sponge overhead down the line and squeeze it into the finish bucket. Use the same route and equipment for each team.
7. Cup-to-cup relay
Setting: Yard or other controlled outdoor area. Supplies: Cups, a starting bucket, and a finish bucket for each team. Players pass cupfuls down a line and pour them into the finish bucket. Either set a time limit and compare the collected water, or play until a team reaches a marked fill line. Keep cups and buckets out of walkways after play.
8. Bucket fill challenge
Setting: Yard with room for teams to work. Supplies: Equal-sized buckets or containers, cups or sponges, and a shared starting supply of water. Mark a fill line on each target bucket. Players move water from the shared supply using the chosen tool; the first team to reach its line wins. To focus on cooperation instead of speed, set a shared goal and see how quickly everyone can fill a container together.

Setting: Clear outdoor lane. Supplies: Cups with small holes, a starting bucket, and a target bucket. Players scoop water and carry it to the target while some leaks away. Compare how much remains after an agreed number of trips or try to reach a fill line. Walk the route for younger players, and keep the lane clear of obstacles.

10. Water brigade
Setting: Yard or other controlled outdoor area. Supplies: Starting and finish buckets, plus cups, a sponge, or another safe container. Form a line and pass water from person to person, pouring what remains into the finish bucket. Try different tools or distances, but keep the route and container safe for the players taking part.
11. Family water-game tournament
Setting: Any suitable outdoor space, with or without a pool. Supplies: Choose supplies for three games from this list. Let family members choose the events, then award points for teamwork, accuracy, or creativity rather than only speed. Offer different roles—player, scorekeeper, or cheerleader—so participation does not depend on running or throwing.
Balloon games and other variations
Water balloons add a cleanup and small-parts consideration. Use them only where fragments can be collected promptly, and keep balloons and broken pieces away from small children.
12. Water-balloon pass
Setting: Open yard. Supplies: Filled water balloons and a bin or finish area. Form a team line and pass balloons toward the finish, trying to deliver as many intact as possible. Players can hand them along or stand farther apart and toss gently. Keep throws away from faces; clear broken balloon pieces as they appear.

13. Balloon squat relay
Setting: Open yard where cleanup is easy. Supplies: Filled water balloons and a marked turning point. A player carries a balloon to the mark, sits on it to pop it, then returns to tag the next teammate. This version involves popping balloons and is better suited to older children who can follow the rules; skip it for very young children. Collect every fragment promptly.
14. Water-cup target challenge
Setting: Yard with a clear throwing area. Supplies: One cup per player and a target cup or bucket. A youth-group activity handout describes a bounded game in which players try to knock water from other players’ cups and prohibits body-checking. For a family-friendly, no-contact version, place a target cup or bucket on a stable surface and aim at that instead. Set boundaries and keep all throws away from faces.
15. Floating-toy rescue
Setting: A shallow, supervised pool or other controlled play area—not natural water. Supplies: Floating toys and a net or cup. Place toys within easy reach and have players retrieve them without splashing one another. An attentive adult should remain close; keep the activity limited to an area where children are within reach.
Make the games work for different ages and abilities
- Choose a comfortable pace: Offer walking routes, shorter distances, larger targets, or extra turns instead of requiring speed.
- Make roles flexible: Players can pour, pass, keep score, choose the next challenge, or cheer for a team.
- Keep the setup accessible: Put supplies within reach and adjust the height or distance of targets to suit participants.
- Let people opt out: Nobody needs to get wet or take part in every event. Water painting and scorekeeping can be alternatives to splashing games.
- Use only a suitable play area: Check the ground for slipping hazards, mark boundaries, and keep running or throwing away from faces and fragile objects.
Water-play safety matters more than the game
For play in or near a pool or spa, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s Pool Safely campaign says to “Designate an official Water Watcher, an adult tasked with supervising children in the water.” That adult should focus on watching and keep a phone nearby for emergencies. Games are not a substitute for active supervision.

The CDC’s recreational-water guidance notes that recreational water can involve illness and injury risks, and natural waters can have additional hazards. Do not move a backyard game to a lake, river, or other natural water setting without considering those conditions.
At a water park, follow posted ride rules and restrictions. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends close supervision, especially for young or weak swimmers; weak swimmers should wear a properly fitted U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket while continuing to receive close adult supervision. Its guidance also advises hydration, sun protection, breaks, and walking on wet decks. See the AAP water-park safety guidance.
For balloon games, collect fragments promptly and do not give balloons or broken pieces to small children. For any outdoor game, pause if the ground gets slippery or the play area becomes crowded.
