Stone and brick fences can look formal, rustic, or open depending on the masonry, wall-top finish, and whether you pair them with railings or planting. Here are 14 distinct directions to explore. Treat them as design concepts, not universally approved plans: local character, site conditions, and fence rules should shape the final choice.
14 stone and brick fence ideas
1. A simple brick boundary wall
Use brick on its own for a clear, substantial boundary with a traditional character. Cheshire West and Chester Council includes brick among suitable boundary-wall materials in its local design guidance. The right brick and detailing depend on the buildings and landscape around the site.

2. A wall built from local stone
Choose stone that reflects the area’s established materials and architecture. Cheshire West and Chester Council recommends local stone in several area types, making this a useful starting point where a new boundary should feel connected to its setting.

Combine a masonry base with railings above it for a boundary that reads as both solid and open. The council’s design code supports combining railings with stone or brick and illustrates a brick, stone, and iron railing treatment. Check whether this mix suits the local streetscape.

4. Brick base with railings
A lower brick wall topped with metal railings creates a distinct masonry base without making the entire boundary opaque. The balance between wall and railing is a design choice; confirm applicable local rules before settling the height or configuration.
5. Brick wall softened by a hedge
Pair brickwork with a hedge to introduce greenery alongside the hard edge of the wall. Cheshire West and Chester Council includes hedges among possible combinations with masonry boundary treatments. Planting space and ongoing care need to be considered for the particular site.
6. Dry-stack stone
Arrange stone without mortar for a more informal, visibly layered effect. Nashville’s fence guidance lists dry-stack stone among masonry materials generally permitted under its local code, but that guidance also notes restrictions. It is not a guarantee of approval elsewhere, or for every Nashville project.

- Real Stacked Stone Look: Hand-painted faux stone and rock texture with deep 1.38 in relief for natural shadows; lightweight PU stone veneer gives a true stone look without the weight
- Great for Accents and Restock: Two panels cover about 6.5 sq ft, sized for small accent areas, niches, or matching and extending an existing wall
- Seal Cut Edges: Paint any cut edge in the panel main shade for a finished look; hand-painted texture forgives small brush marks, and local paint or hardware stores can match it easily
- Hand-Painted Like Real Stone: Each panel is painted by hand, so tones vary slightly from photos and from panel to panel just like natural stone; any paint close to the main shade blends right in
- Installs Over Almost Any Wall: Mounts with construction adhesive or screws over drywall, stucco, brick, concrete, or wood, even slightly uneven surfaces, with no tear-out; water-resistant, UV-stable PU works indoors and outdoors
7. Mortared stone wall
Mortar gives stonework a different visual character from dry-stack construction and can make the joints a prominent part of the design. Nashville’s guidance also lists stone and mortar as a fence material category; it does not provide project-specific construction details.
8. Brick piers with open infill
Use brick piers as a repeating rhythm along the boundary, with open railings or another suitable infill between them. This concept varies the solid-to-open balance without making a continuous masonry wall. Confirm that the proposed combination is permitted and appropriate for the site.
9. Stone piers with railings
Natural-stone piers paired with metal railings can give an open fence a more substantial visual frame. Select the stone and railing style in relation to nearby materials rather than assuming a particular combination is suitable everywhere.

10. Brick wall with a coping-brick finish
Finish the top edge of a brick wall with coping bricks for a deliberate, complete appearance. Cheshire West and Chester Council recommends coping stones or coping bricks for brick walls. The correct detail depends on the wall design and should not be treated as a substitute for sound construction.

11. Stone wall with stone coping
A stone cap can continue the wall’s material across its top edge. The design should account for how the cap relates to the wall beneath it; there is no single coping detail that suits every wall.
12. Concrete masonry fence with a contrasting cap
For a concrete masonry fence, a different coping material can create a clear top-line contrast. The Concrete Masonry & Hardscapes Association (CMHA) discusses concrete brick, cast stone, brick, and natural stone as coping options for concrete masonry fences. Its resource also describes projection to form a drip edge; use current technical guidance and project specifications for design details.

13. Stone wall with concrete cap and wrought-iron fence
Combine a stone wall, concrete cap, and wrought-iron fence above for a layered boundary with both solid and open elements. Milwaukee’s informative urban-design page illustrates this combination, but is marked as work in progress, so take it as a visual example rather than a formal standard.
14. A deliberately textured masonry boundary
Choose a more varied surface treatment instead of a smooth, regular finish. Milwaukee’s informative guidance describes smooth, regular masonry as well as more textured approaches for smaller residential landscape walls. It also suggests coordinating a retaining-wall material with the site’s masonry façade. The page is marked work in progress, so treat these as design prompts.
How to choose between stone, brick, and combinations
Start with the appearance you want and the context the fence must respond to. Brick and local or natural stone offer different visual characters; railings can open up a masonry boundary, while a hedge adds planting. A coping finish also changes the wall’s top edge. There is no source-supported universal ranking for cost, maintenance, or lifespan, so compare actual proposals and specifications rather than relying on a general claim.

- Look at local fit: Consider the materials used in nearby buildings and established boundaries. The Cheshire West and Chester guidance is specific to its local design code, not a rule for every community.
- Decide how open the boundary should feel: Masonry alone, railings above masonry, and masonry alongside a hedge create different visual balances.
- Choose the wall-top treatment with the wall design: Coping may be brick, stone, cast stone, or concrete brick, depending on the design and material system.
- Separate boundary walls from retaining walls: A wall that holds back soil has a different project context from a freestanding fence. Site grade and applicable technical requirements matter.
Check local requirements and safety before building
Fence materials and approvals are jurisdiction-specific. Nashville’s guidance describes materials generally permitted under its local code while also noting restrictions. Brisbane City Council says requirements depend on the project and applicable code. Neither source establishes a height limit or approval rule for other locations; check the authority responsible for your property.
Do not treat a retaining wall as a decorative fence. UK government guidance on boundary and retaining walls in England directs attention to safe design, construction, and maintenance. For a retaining wall, uncertain ground conditions, or other structural questions, use appropriately qualified local professionals and follow the rules that apply to the project.
