The best way to store patio furniture depends on what you need to protect, how often you use it, and how exposed the storage spot is. Keep everyday cushions and small items in a nearby box or bench; move folded or seasonal furniture into a shed or other sheltered space; and use fitted covers for large pieces that stay outside. Measure the items and the available space before choosing a solution.
14 outdoor furniture storage ideas
1. Cover furniture that stays outdoors
A fitted cover can protect a table, chairs, or sectional without requiring a separate storage footprint. Match the cover to the furniture’s shape and dimensions; POLYWOOD’s cover guidance also emphasizes dimension-based fit. A cover and sheltered storage solve different problems: use a cover for furniture that remains outside, and consider a sheltered location for pieces or cushions you can move.

2. Keep cushions in a deck box near the seating area
A deck box makes cushions and small outdoor items easy to reach where they are used. Compare cushion measurements with the box’s interior dimensions, rather than relying only on its advertised capacity. Lowe’s deck box buying guide covers sizing and capacity checks.
3. Choose a storage bench if you need another seat
A storage bench combines a place to sit with a place to put cushions or accessories, using one footprint. Check that the items fit inside and confirm the maker’s stated weight limit before using the bench as seating.

4. Use a shed for folded or seasonal furniture
A shed can work when furniture is too large for a deck box but can be folded, stacked, or otherwise fitted through the entrance. Compare the shed’s usable footprint and access with the dimensions of the pieces you want to store.
5. Move cushions to a dry, sheltered place for the off-season
For longer-term storage, put cushions somewhere dry and sheltered, such as a suitable indoor space or shed. POLYWOOD recommends a shed or console table for added off-season cushion protection in its protective-cover guidance.
6. Add an outdoor-rated cabinet for vertical storage
A cabinet can organize smaller patio and garden supplies without spreading them across the floor. IKEA includes cabinets and shelving among its outdoor storage and organizing options. Check that the particular cabinet you choose is designed for outdoor use.
7. Sort small accessories into lidded bins
Use bins for compact items such as folded covers and small textiles, keeping them separate from bulky cushions. Check how the lid closes and whether the bin is intended for the exposure where it will sit; a lid alone does not establish that a container is weatherproof.

8. Give the umbrella its own sleeve
Match an umbrella cover to the umbrella type and dimensions. Target’s patio storage category guide distinguishes covers for market umbrellas from longer covers for cantilever designs.
9. Bag cushion sets before placing them in a box
A storage bag can help keep a set of cushions together inside a deck box. Lowe’s suggests bags as an additional layer when storing cushions in a box, while Article discusses breathable cloth bags in its outdoor furniture care guide. Do not assume a bag by itself prevents moisture damage.
10. Measure the storage spot before buying
Measure the patio corner, porch, or shed area where the unit will go, and leave enough clearance to open a box lid or cabinet door. Lowe’s includes clearance as a consideration in its deck box buying guidance. A unit that fits only when closed may be awkward to use.
11. Separate everyday items from seasonal pieces
Keep frequently used cushions and accessories near the seating area in a box or bench. Put pieces used only occasionally or during the off-season in a larger sheltered location. This arrangement makes daily access convenient without requiring every item to occupy the most accessible space.

12. Use a small outdoor box for throws and patio extras
A compact box can hold throws and other small items without taking up the space needed for full-size cushions or furniture. Target’s category guidance covers boxes in different materials and sizes; choose one sized to both its contents and its location.
13. Cover furniture that is difficult to move
For bulky or awkward pieces that stay in place, use a cover shaped for that furniture and secure it as the maker intends. Covers are a practical protection category, not a guarantee against every weather condition.

Pair a nearby cushion box or bench with a cabinet or shed for the rest of the gear. The smaller unit can hold items you reach for often, while the larger space takes bulkier or seasonal pieces. IKEA’s outdoor organizing guide includes cabinets and other storage categories that can complement a box or bench.

- Start with what must fit. Cushions, full furniture, umbrellas, and small accessories call for different storage formats.
- Check usable capacity. For cushions, compare their measurements with the interior dimensions of a box, not just its stated volume.
- Measure the site and access. Allow room to open lids or doors, and check that larger pieces can pass through a shed entrance.
- Match storage to exposure. A fitted cover is useful for furniture that remains outdoors; move cushions to a dry, sheltered place for longer-term storage.
- Consider extra functions. A storage bench can also provide seating, but check its weight limit.
- Plan around how often you use each item. Put daily-use items nearby and seasonal or bulky items in a larger sheltered space.
Retail buying guides describe categories and selection checks, not universal weather performance. The right choice depends on the fit, access, and exposure at your own home.
