Make router setups easier to measure, adjust and repeat by matching the setup aid to the job: seat the bit correctly, use a reliable reference for height or alignment, and test changes on scrap before routing the workpiece. These 14 techniques cover different operations, so choose the ones that fit your cut rather than treating them as a single universal procedure.
Start with a secure, correctly seated bit
Before changing a bit or adjusting the setup, disconnect power and follow the instructions for your router and table. Bosch’s router-table manual calls for at least 3/4 inch of shank engagement and for checking that the router, bit, base and mounting plate are secure. That is guidance from Bosch for the equipment covered by its manual, not a universal specification; use your own manufacturer’s requirements.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A bit pressed hard against the bottom of the collet may not tighten properly. WOOD Magazine’s 2018 guidance recommends inserting the bit fully and withdrawing it about 1/8 inch before tightening. The Bosch engagement instruction and WOOD’s seating advice address different equipment and contexts; do not assume one figure applies to every router or bit. Clean and inspect the shank and collet if a bit slips, and replace damaged parts.
1. Hold insertion depth with an O-ring or grommet
If the bit tends to slide while you tighten the collet, place a snug O-ring on the shank at the chosen insertion depth. It acts as a temporary stop. A small rubber grommet in the spindle is another option described by WOOD Magazine. Remove or reposition the stop as needed, and make sure it does not interfere with proper clamping.

Support the work and control how much material the bit removes
2. Shim the outfeed fence for an edge that disappears
When an edge profile removes enough material that the newly cut edge no longer bears against the outfeed fence, shim the outfeed face so the workpiece remains supported after the cut. WOOD Magazine’s example uses 1/32-inch plastic laminate attached with double-faced tape. Match the shim to the profile and make sure it is secure and clear of the cutter.
3. Remove excess stock before routing
Where practical, trim away excess material before bringing the workpiece to the router. For flush-trimming solid-wood edging on veneered plywood or MDF, WOOD Magazine suggests setting the bearing depth just below the edging. If the router tips slightly, the cutter is then less likely to cut into the veneer.
4. Route in increments
Do not ask the router to remove all the excess in one heavy pass. Removing material beforehand and routing in stages can reduce the cut’s demands on the bit and motor and limit the chips produced. Bosch also advises multiple shallower passes instead of a deep cut in one pass. Test the setup on scrap before cutting the actual workpiece.

5. Leave a fine final pass
To refine a cut or remove burn or chatter marks, leave a small amount of material for a finishing pass. WOOD Magazine gives 1/64 inch as an example—not a required allowance. On a router table, masking tape on the workpiece edge or fence can hold the setup back for the final pass; with a handheld router, business cards beneath the subbase can do the same. Remove the temporary material before the finishing pass and verify the resulting depth on scrap.
6. Use tabletop spacers instead of resetting bit height
For successive shallow passes on a router table, set the bit height once and raise the workpiece on temporary layers. WOOD Magazine describes 1/4-inch hardboard or plywood layers secured with double-faced tape, with enough clearance around the bit. Remove a layer between passes to increase the depth gradually. Keep the layers stable and out of the cutter’s path.
Measure bit depth from a reference that suits the operation
7. Set depth with setup bars
Machined brass setup bars provide a fixed thickness for setting bit height. WOOD Magazine describes kits typically ranging from 1/8 to 1/2 inch thick. In its example, a tongue-and-groove cutter is set 1/4 inch from the table or subbase surface for 3/4-inch stock. Those are example dimensions; use the bar and cutter settings appropriate to your stock and joint.

8. Save test pieces from successful paired-bit setups
When you have dialed in a paired-bit operation, such as cope-and-stick or tongue-and-groove work, save the test stock. A piece from a successful setup can serve as a physical reference when you repeat the job, reducing the need to rediscover the relationship between cutter height and fit.
9. Set dovetail depth from the mating workpiece
For a dovetail setup, tape a scrap extension to the mating workpiece and use that scrap as the depth reference. Lower the bit until it touches the reference, then lock the router base. Test the fit on scrap before cutting the final joint.
10. Set hinge-mortise depth from the hinge leaf
To establish a mortise depth for a particular hinge, place the router on a hinge leaf and lower the bit until it touches the benchtop. This uses the hinge itself as the reference for the setup described by WOOD Magazine. Confirm the result on scrap and account for the jig or template used in your operation.

11. Read bit height with a vertically scaled steel rule
A steel rule with measurement marks on its end can be easier to read through a router-base opening than a conventional rule with markings along its side. Use it when the base opening makes a standard scale awkward to view, and check the measurement from a consistent reference surface.
Align the parts of the setup
12. Center the subbase with a centering cone
A centering cone can align a router subbase with the spindle. Accurate centering matters when using a guide bushing for joinery such as dovetails or box joints, because the bushing’s position relative to the bit affects the cut. Follow the router’s instructions for installing and centering the subbase.
13. Align fence faces to the bit
Bring the router-table fence close to the bit by eye, tighten one end, then use a steel rule against the fence faces to align them with the bit’s bearing or profile reference. Tighten the other end and verify that the fence remains aligned. Keep the router unplugged while making adjustments.

14. Mark the starting height for above-table adjustment
If your router has an above-table fine-adjustment tool, mark the table at the scale’s zero reference before making changes. The mark preserves a visible reference to the starting position as you make small adjustments.
Choose the aid by the problem you need to solve
| Setup need | Useful aid or technique | What it helps with |
|---|---|---|
| Hold a bit at a selected insertion depth while tightening | O-ring or small grommet | Prevents the bit from sliding during tightening; it does not replace correct collet seating. |
| Measure bit height or depth | Brass setup bar or vertically scaled steel rule | Provides a physical thickness or a readable scale. |
| Repeat a proven paired-bit setup | Saved test stock | Preserves a reference from a successful joint setup. |
| Align the subbase and spindle | Centering cone | Helps center the base for guide-bushing work. |
| Support a workpiece after an edge profile | Outfeed-fence shim | Supports the newly profiled edge when it no longer reaches the fence. |
| Increase cut depth without resetting the bit | Tabletop spacer layers | Raises the workpiece between progressively deeper passes. |
Check the setup before cutting the workpiece
- Disconnect power before adjustments or accessory changes, as directed in Bosch’s router-table instructions.
- Check that the shank and collet are clean and undamaged, the bit is properly seated for your equipment, and all mounting components are secure.
- Make deep cuts in multiple shallower passes rather than one heavy pass.
- Test bit height, fence position, depth and fit on scrap before routing the finished piece.
For more on the seating advice, see WOOD Magazine’s answer about router bits slipping in the collet. WOOD Magazine also explains the techniques in “14 Fuss-free router-bit setup,” updated July 7, 2023. Bosch’s router-table operation manual provides equipment-specific safety and setup instructions.
