13 Deck Privacy Ideas for a More Secluded Backyard

Screen the view that matters with a deck privacy panel, planter, trellis, pergola, or layered planting—without automatically enclosing the whole deck.

The best way to add privacy to a deck is to screen the sightline that bothers you—not automatically to enclose the whole space. A panel beside the dining area, a trellis near the stairs, or a pergola with one screened side can provide separation while leaving other parts of the deck open to daylight and airflow. Match the solution to whether the view comes from a seated neighbor, a side window, or above, and check local requirements before building.

13 deck privacy ideas

These approaches range from movable accents to permanent structures. Their privacy depends on placement and design; there is no universal ranking or measured comparison. Start with the view you want to interrupt, then consider how much light, airflow, deck space, and upkeep you are willing to trade.

1. Install a purpose-built privacy panel

Place a deck privacy panel along the exposed edge or beside the main seating area to shield a specific zone. For example, Deckorators’ privacy screen system is offered in several styles. The manufacturer says its panels are for aesthetic purposes only, have not been tested or approved as a guardrail system, and are not intended for structural or safety use. Do not use a decorative panel in place of a code-compliant guardrail; consult a licensed professional about local compliance.

2. Choose a slatted screen

Slats can interrupt a direct view while keeping a less enclosed appearance than a solid panel. Check the actual gap and viewing angle for the specific product: the amount of privacy depends on how the slats are arranged and where the observer is standing.

3. Set up a decorative freestanding screen

A freestanding screen can block a particular view or define a seating area without treating the whole deck as a construction project. Position it where it screens the unwanted sightline, and confirm that its base and placement are suitable for outdoor conditions and do not obstruct circulation.

4. Put a tall planter at seated eye level

A tall planter placed beside a chair or table can soften a low sightline without creating a full-height wall. Check the view from the seat you actually use; a planter that screens a seated person may not screen someone standing.

5. Use wheeled planters for adjustable screening

Wheeled planters let you shift screening as furniture, entertaining needs, or seasons change. They use deck floor space and need to be stable when parked; make sure containers can be moved safely when planted and filled.

6. Combine a planter with an integral trellis

A planter with a built-in trellis combines a container and vertical growing space. Train a suitable climber up the trellis for a planted screen, and account for the plant’s eventual size, care needs, and local growing conditions.

7. Grow climbing plants on a separate trellis

A trellis with climbing plants can create a softer screen than a solid wall. It takes time for plants to fill in, and the right species depend on the region, exposure, and care you can provide. Choose for local conditions rather than assuming one plant works everywhere.

8. Add an open trellis near the stairs or deck edge

An open trellis can partially screen a boundary while preserving a sense of openness. Near stairs or an edge, consider the layout carefully so it does not interfere with safe access, the guardrail, or required clearances.

  • DIMENSIONS: Once assembled, your wood privacy screen will measure 73.5in H x 38in W. That's over 6ft of height for extra privacy around your patio, deck, garden, or backyard.

9. Use a pergola to soften overhead views

A pergola can define the deck as an outdoor room and soften views from above, but an open pergola alone may not block a neighbor’s high window. If the problem is a direct overhead view, assess the angle before investing in a structure.

10. Screen one side of a pergola

Adding screening to a pergola’s exposed side can address a lateral sightline while leaving the rest of the deck open. Because this combines structures and screening, check the design, attachment, and local requirements before construction.

12. Plant tall shrubs along the boundary

Tall shrubs can form a living screen where there is room along the deck edge or nearby ground. Unlike a ready-made panel, planting takes time to establish and requires ongoing care. Consider mature size and local conditions before choosing plants.

13. Layer a screen, planting, and overhead structure

Combine a screen for an immediate visual boundary, plants for texture, and a pergola or trellis overhead to make a seating area feel more enclosed. Keep enough open space for light and airflow, and account for vegetation and debris near structures, especially in wildfire-prone areas.

How to choose the right approach

Use the actual sightline—not the product category—as your starting point. A seated view across a table calls for a different placement than a standing view from a neighboring window or a view from above.

  • Identify the angle: Check the view from seated and standing positions, and note whether it comes from the side or overhead.
  • Decide how open the deck should feel: Slats, trellis, and planting can preserve more openness than a solid screen, but their screening depends on spacing, growth, and placement.
  • Consider floor space and flexibility: Planters occupy deck area; wheeled options can move, while built structures are more permanent.
  • Allow for plant growth and upkeep: Living screens take time to fill in and need care suited to the plant and region.
  • Check construction and safety implications: A screen or pergola can affect attachments, clearances, and local approval requirements.

Check local rules and wildfire considerations

Permit and design requirements depend on where you live and what you build. The City of Edmonton’s uncovered-deck guidance says permits may be required for uncovered decks and freestanding pergolas or trellises; design or engineer-stamped drawings may also be needed depending on the design. The City of Joondalup’s deck guidance sets out rules for some decks near a side or back boundary. These are local examples, not rules for other jurisdictions. Ask your local building or planning authority and, where needed, a qualified professional before construction.

In wildfire-prone locations, consult local fire guidance before adding screens or planting near a home. CAL FIRE’s home-hardening guidance flags privacy fences as vulnerable to ignition and notes that vegetation and debris near fences can matter. That does not mean every screen or plant performs the same way; manage vegetation and debris according to local recommendations.
