A practical starter set for a small farm, homestead, or market garden covers soil work, weeding, pruning, carrying, watering, personal protection, and upkeep. The right 12 depend on your crops, soil, recurring jobs, budget, and the people using them; this is a useful starting list, not a universal standard or a substitute for machinery on a larger commercial farm.
What equipment is essential for a small farm?
Start with tools that solve jobs you do repeatedly. For many small-scale growers, the core field kit is a shovel, spade, garden fork, hoe, rake, trowel, hand pruners, pruning saw, carrying aid, and watering equipment. Gloves and a basic maintenance kit help protect the user and keep the tools serviceable.

University of Maryland Extension emphasizes that no farm operation is exactly like another and recommends comparing options and visiting farms, shows, or dealers. It also notes: “Often, you may be able to rent or loan a piece of equipment before purchasing to determine if it works for your conditions.” University of Maryland Extension’s vegetable equipment and irrigation guidance is a useful place to consider those decisions.
12 useful tools, grouped by the work they do
Prepare and work the soil
- Round-point digging shovel. Use it for ordinary digging and lifting loose soil. If the job is moving a larger quantity of lightweight material, a wide scoop is better suited to that task.
- Spade. Its flatter blade suits cutting into heavier soil, edging beds, removing sod, incorporating organic matter, and making straight-sided trenches. It complements rather than replaces a round-point shovel.
- Garden fork. Keep one for soil work where a fork’s tines are useful. The best role depends on the fork design, the soil, and the crop; do not assume every fork is suited to every digging or cultivating job.
- Hoe. Use it for cultivation and weeding. Choose a pattern and working width that fit your row spacing and the person using it; no single hoe design is right for every bed.
- Rake. A sturdy rake gathers leaves and clears debris. Handle length should suit the user and the working area.
- Hand trowel. This is a compact choice for planting, potting, weeding, and light digging in smaller spaces.
Prune and maintain woody plants
- Bypass hand pruners. Use them for routine pruning and smaller branches. Bypass blades cross like scissors and can reduce tearing or crushing of live tissue. Choose a model that fits your hand and handedness.
- Pruning saw. Reach for a saw when a branch is too large for comfortable hand-pruner use. UC Agriculture and Natural Resources describes pruning saws as appropriate for branches over 1.5 inches in diameter; that is guidance, not a universal capacity rating for every saw or type of wood.
Move materials and deliver water
- Wheelbarrow or garden cart. Move soil, mulch, stones, debris, tools, or harvested vegetables. A two-wheel design or cart may offer more stability for some users; a one-wheel barrow may be preferable for other paths or handling needs. Choose for the route, load, and user rather than assuming one design is best.
- Watering equipment. A watering can offers gentle control for transplants, a hose handles general watering, and drip irrigation directs water to plants. Select among them based on plot size, layout, and existing irrigation.
Protect the user and care for the kit
- Work gloves. Match material and coverage to the task. Gloves can help protect against splinters, pricks, cuts, abrasions, bites, and irritants, but they do not replace other protective equipment appropriate to the job.
- Sharpening and basic maintenance kit. Keep a suitable sharpener or file, cleaning brush, and light protective oil available. Routine upkeep is part of a working tool kit, not an optional extra.
UC Agriculture and Natural Resources’ essential tools guide discusses these tool categories and practical selection cues. The list above is an editorial starter set; it is not a published universal standard. If you want twelve field implements instead of counting upkeep supplies, a garden knife or small hand rake—also covered by UC ANR—can take the twelfth place, while maintenance remains a separate necessity.

How to choose tools that fit your farm
- Match the tool to the job. Distinguish digging from scooping, pruning live growth from sawing larger wood, and gentle transplant watering from general irrigation.
- Try the handle and grip. Consider handle length, grip comfort, hand size, strength, and handedness. A tool that is difficult to control is a poor fit even if its category is right.
- Account for soil, crops, and layout. Heavy soil, narrow rows, woody plantings, bed spacing, and distance from water all affect which tool and dimensions are useful.
- Consider transport and stability. Compare weight, storage, path width, load size, and how steadily the tool moves when full. Virginia Tech’s AgrAbility resource notes that a two-wheel wheelbarrow can provide greater balance and lower tipping potential than a one-wheel counterpart for some users, and that carts can reduce repeated trips and physical strain. These are considerations, not rankings for every farm. See Virginia Tech’s small-farm and garden accessibility guidance.
- Think about durability and repair. Look at construction, replaceable or maintainable parts, and whether you can store the tool dry and sheltered. Include upkeep in the cost and time of ownership.
- Test before committing when possible. Borrowing or renting can reveal whether a tool suits your soil, paths, workload, and body before you buy.
What changes on a small farm versus a larger operation?
On a small farm or home garden, hand tools can cover many recurring tasks and are relatively easy to store and move between beds. As acreage, workload, or production volume grows, repeated digging, cultivation, hauling, and irrigation may call for larger equipment or a different system. The appropriate scale depends on the operation; twelve hand tools should not be treated as a complete equipment plan for a mechanized or large commercial farm.
