11 Ways You’re Damaging Your Washer and Dryer Every Time You Do Laundry

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Small laundry habits can quietly shorten appliance life, reduce performance, damage clothing, or create a safety hazard. The most important distinction is that an overloaded drum or neglected filter may increase wear without immediately “breaking” the machine.

Below are 11 common mistakes, what they can cause, and the replacement habit to adopt. Your owner’s manual and garment-care labels always supersede generalized advice.

Most laundry mistakes do not destroy a washer or dryer in one dramatic event. More often, they gradually reduce cleaning or drying performance, increase wear, damage clothing, create odors, or raise a fire and overheating risk. The habits below are the ones most likely to cause trouble over time.

Important: Your appliance owner’s manual and each garment’s care label take priority over general laundry advice. Capacity, detergent type, cleaning cycles, filter locations, and vent requirements vary by model.

1. You overload the washer

A washer needs room for water and detergent to circulate and for clothes to move through the wash action. Packing the drum tightly can leave garments poorly cleaned, trap detergent or lint, and contribute to an unbalanced load. It may also place additional stress on the motor, suspension, bearings, and other components.

Overloading does not mean the machine will immediately fail. The more immediate symptoms are often dirty clothes, residue, excessive vibration, or a load that cannot spin properly. Repeatedly forcing bulky items into a full drum can increase wear and may damage fabrics through excessive rubbing.

Do this instead: Load clothes loosely and follow the model’s capacity and loading instructions. Bulky blankets, comforters, towels, and other heavy items may need a separate load even when they technically fit inside the drum. Do not press clothing down to make room for more.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. You overload the dryer

Dryers depend on free tumbling and adequate airflow. A crowded drum prevents warm air from reaching every surface and can leave clothes damp in the middle while overheating the outside layers. It also increases drying time, wrinkling, and the chance that items will bunch together.

A dryer load should generally be smaller than, or at least no larger than, the washer load that produced it. Heavy towels, blankets, and other large fabrics need particularly generous tumbling space. Putting two washer loads into one dryer load can create a long, inefficient cycle and unnecessary heat exposure.

Do this instead: Split large or heavy loads. Clothes should be able to lift and fall freely as the drum turns. If the manual gives a separate capacity limit for bulky items, use that limit rather than the dryer’s headline capacity.

3. You use too much detergent—or the wrong detergent

More detergent does not mean cleaner clothes. Excess detergent can create too many suds, interfere with rinsing, leave a film on fabrics, contribute to odors, and make a washer operate incorrectly. On some front-load machines, excessive suds can even contribute to leaking or error conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Detergent choice matters as well. High-efficiency washers generally require low-sudsing HE laundry detergent, while the correct dose depends on the washer, load size, soil level, detergent concentration, and sometimes water hardness. Filling a dispenser above its maximum line is not a reliable way to improve cleaning.

Do this instead: Measure detergent using the washer and detergent instructions, and use the smallest recommended amount that consistently cleans the load. Check whether your machine requires HE detergent. Do not guess based only on the size of the detergent cap, and do not add detergent to a clean-washer cycle unless the manufacturer specifically instructs you to do so.

4. You leave pockets full and fasteners unsecured

Coins, keys, hairpins, screws, and other objects can rattle inside the drum, damage the washer door or drum, obstruct a drain path, or become trapped in the pump filter. Sharp objects can snag fabric. Open zippers, hooks, drawstrings, and sashes can catch on other garments, scrape surfaces, or become tangled.

This is a clothing-damage problem as well as an appliance problem. A forgotten pen can stain an entire load, while a metal object can cause loud noises that are difficult to diagnose after the fact.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do this instead: Empty every pocket before washing. Close zippers, fasten hooks, and tie loose strings. Turn items with decorative hardware inside out when the care label permits it. For small, delicate, or tangle-prone washable items, mesh laundry bags can provide an extra layer of protection; they are not a substitute for following the garment label or avoiding machine washing when it is prohibited.

5. You leave wet laundry sitting in the washer

Wet clothing left in a closed washer gives damp fabric, detergent residue, and the machine’s interior more time to develop a musty smell. Prolonged dampness can also contribute to dye transfer, mildew-like odors, and a stale load that needs rewashing.

Repeatedly rewashing neglected loads adds water, detergent, friction, and wear to the garments. Fragrance beads or fabric softener may mask an odor temporarily without addressing the damp conditions that caused it.

Do this instead: Transfer laundry to the dryer or a suitable drying area as soon as practical after the cycle ends. If a load is already musty, follow the garment label and the washer manufacturer’s cleaning instructions. Avoid automatically adding more chemicals or mixing cleaning products.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. You close the washer door or lid immediately

A washer interior remains wet after a cycle. Closing the door or lid traps that moisture and limits ventilation, which can contribute to odor and buildup around the gasket, tub, dispenser, or other damp surfaces.

This is especially relevant to front-load washers, where water can remain in folds of the door gasket. Leaving the door open does not clean the gasket, but it gives the interior a better opportunity to dry between cycles.

Do this instead: Leave the door or lid ajar after washing when it is safe and practical. Keep children and pets away from the open appliance, and follow model-specific safety instructions. If the washer is in a narrow walkway, use the safest ventilation arrangement permitted by the manual rather than creating a trip or access hazard.

7. You skip tub, gasket, dispenser, and pump-filter maintenance

Soil, hair, lint, detergent, fabric softener, and moisture accumulate in places that a normal wash cycle may not fully clean. Common trouble spots include the door gasket, detergent dispenser, tub, drain area, and—on applicable models—the drain-pump filter.

Neglected buildup can contribute to odors, slow draining, residue on clothing, leaks around a dirty gasket, or reduced washer performance. Pump-filter maintenance is model-dependent: some machines have an accessible filter, while others require a different service procedure. Never remove a panel or filter without checking the instructions first; residual water may spill out.

Do this instead: Clean the dispenser and gasket as specified by the manufacturer, inspect the accessible filter when the manual calls for it, and run the designated tub-clean cycle on its recommended schedule. Some manufacturers suggest approximately monthly cleaning or cleaning after a set number of wash cycles, while others specify a different interval.

If your manual permits a dedicated product, washing machine cleaner tablets can be convenient for the periodic clean-washer cycle. Use only a product and procedure compatible with your model. Do not assume vinegar, bleach, or another household cleaner is universally safe, and never combine bleach with detergent or other chemicals in the same cleaning procedure unless the manufacturer explicitly directs it.

8. You ignore an unbalanced or unlevel washer

A washer that rocks on its feet, sits out of level, or repeatedly spins with the load bunched on one side may vibrate, bang, walk across the floor, or leave clothes excessively wet. Persistent vibration can increase wear on suspension and other mechanical components, while poor spin performance forces the dryer to work longer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Some loads naturally become unbalanced. A single heavy blanket, a few towels mixed with lightweight clothing, or an item that absorbs a large amount of water can shift to one side. That is different from a machine that is incorrectly installed or has a mechanical fault.

Do this instead: Pause the cycle and redistribute the load when it bunches. Reduce the load if the problem repeats. Check level in both directions and adjust and secure the feet according to the installation instructions. If the washer remains violently noisy or moves after proper leveling and load adjustment, stop using it until the cause is inspected.

9. You fail to clean the dryer lint screen after every load

A lint screen covered with lint restricts airflow. The usual result is longer drying time, but poor airflow can also contribute to overheating and unnecessary stress on the dryer. A missing, loose, damaged, or incorrectly installed screen creates an additional risk because lint can enter areas where it should not.

Lint collection is not evidence that the screen can be cleaned occasionally. The amount varies with the load, fabric, and appliance, so a screen that appears lightly coated can still affect airflow.

Do this instead: Remove lint after every cycle and reinstall the screen firmly before starting the next load. Never operate the dryer without its properly fitted screen. If you notice a burning smell, unusually high cabinet temperature, repeated overheating, or a cycle that suddenly takes much longer, stop using the dryer and investigate the airflow problem safely.

10. You let detergent or fabric-softener film clog the lint screen

A lint screen can look clean while a nearly invisible coating of detergent or fabric softener blocks its mesh. When water no longer passes freely through the screen, airflow falls and drying times increase.

This buildup is more likely when products are used heavily or when residue is not periodically washed away. A quick hand-wipe removes loose lint but does not necessarily remove the film.

Do this instead: Test the screen when residue is suspected according to the dryer manual’s instructions. Manufacturer guidance commonly involves washing or brushing the screen with warm or hot water, mild liquid detergent, and a nylon brush, then rinsing and drying it completely before reinstalling it. Follow your model’s procedure rather than treating this as a universal recipe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A nylon lint-screen brush may be useful for residue-coated mesh, but it is an optional tool—not a replacement for the manufacturer’s cleaning method. Never reinstall a wet screen unless the manual specifically says it is acceptable.

11. You ignore venting problems—or dry items that should not receive heat

For a conventional vented dryer, the entire exhaust path matters: the lint screen, flexible connection, duct, wall penetration, and exterior termination. A crushed, kinked, disconnected, obstructed, or lint-filled vent can restrict airflow and impair drying. It may also contribute to overheating and a serious fire hazard.

Warning signs include clothes taking much longer to dry, a hot laundry room, a dryer that shuts down repeatedly, weak airflow at the outside hood, or lint accumulating around connections. Do not assume replacing the lint screen solves an exhaust restriction.

Do this instead: Keep the dryer’s exhaust path unobstructed and inspect it as permitted by the appliance and building instructions. A dryer vent cleaning kit may be appropriate for a short, straight, accessible vent system when the manufacturer’s procedure allows it. It is not suitable for every installation. Use a qualified professional when the duct is long, inaccessible, routed through a wall or roof, damaged, repeatedly blocked, or near gas, electrical, roofing, or structural hazards.

Do not put heat-sensitive or unsuitable materials in a dryer. Follow care labels and the appliance manual, and never dry items contaminated with gasoline, solvents, wax, oils, or other flammable substances. Materials such as rubber and some plastics can melt, deform, release fumes, or damage the dryer when exposed to heat.

Washer and dryer maintenance are not identical

Not every dryer has an exterior exhaust duct. Conventional vented dryers exhaust air through a home’s vent system and need attention to that path. Ventless condenser and heat-pump dryers do not exhaust air through the home’s exterior in the same way, but they still have model-specific filters, heat exchangers, condensate systems, and cleaning requirements.

A practical laundry-care checklist

  • Load the washer loosely and split bulky items.
  • Leave enough room in the dryer for clothes to tumble freely.
  • Use the specified detergent type and measured dose.
  • Empty pockets and secure zippers, hooks, strings, and sashes.
  • Remove wet laundry promptly.
  • Leave the washer door or lid ajar when safe.
  • Clean the gasket, dispenser, tub, and applicable pump filter on the model’s schedule.
  • Level the washer and address repeated imbalance or severe vibration.
  • Clean the dryer lint screen after every load.
  • Wash or brush residue from the lint screen when the manufacturer’s test or instructions indicate it is needed.
  • Inspect and maintain a conventional dryer’s vent path, or follow the separate maintenance plan for a ventless dryer.
  • Read care labels before applying heat or washing delicate, rubber, plastic, solvent-contaminated, or otherwise unsuitable items.

When to stop using an appliance

Routine mistakes usually show up first as poor results or extra wear, but certain symptoms should not be ignored. Stop the appliance and consult the manual or a qualified technician if you notice smoke, a burning smell, repeated overheating, a gas smell, water leaking near electrical components, violent movement, a damaged power cord, or a dryer that continues to have severe airflow problems after the accessible filter and vent areas are addressed.

The goal is not to treat every imperfect load as an emergency. It is to correct small habits before they become expensive repairs, ruined clothing, or a safety problem.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I leave my washing machine door open after washing?

Manufacturers generally recommend leaving a front-load washer door ajar after a cycle when it is safe and practical. Ventilation helps the damp interior dry, but the gasket and dispenser still need routine cleaning.

Do all dryers need a dryer vent?

Not necessarily. A vented dryer needs an unobstructed exterior exhaust path, while a ventless condenser or heat-pump dryer has different filters and maintenance requirements. Check the exact model manual.

Can using too much detergent damage a washing machine?

Use the detergent type and dose specified by both the washer and detergent manufacturer. Many high-efficiency washers require low-sudsing HE detergent, and using extra detergent can cause residue, excess suds, odor, and poor rinsing.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How often should a dryer lint screen be cleaned?

Remove lint after every load. If the screen has a detergent or fabric-softener film, clean it using the dryer manufacturer’s recommended washing or brushing procedure and dry it completely before reinstalling it.

The Bottom Line

Protecting a washer and dryer is mostly consistent housekeeping: use the right-sized load and detergent, keep the washer ventilated and clean, remove lint every time, maintain the correct exhaust or filter system, and follow the manual and garment labels before using heat.
