Six design formats to look for
The following are useful pattern formats derived from the features documented above. They are not additional publisher listings verified here.
6. A single open-top cube
Choose this simplest format for shelves, cubbies, or toy storage. Look for a pattern that specifies finished width, depth, and height and tells you whether the walls need interfacing or foam.

- Pattern only
- Fabrics not included
- Make these soft-sided fabric bins in your favorite fabrics and colors to organize and store all sorts of treasures
- Product Dimension: 8.5"L x 5.5"W x 0.1"H
7. A coordinated three-size set
A size set is practical when one pattern needs to cover small accessories, medium supplies, and bulky items. Check whether the dimensions are supplied as separate cutting charts or as one assembled template.
8. A six-size nesting set
Nesting is useful when empty bins must be stored compactly. Confirm that the sizes are designed to nest rather than merely sharing a similar shape.

9. A padded, structured bin
Padding or foam stabilizer helps a fabric bin hold its shape. It also changes the cutting and seam allowances, so do not substitute a different stabilizer without checking the instructions.

10. A lidded bin with a viewing window
A fold-over lid protects contents, while a vinyl window lets you identify them without opening the bin. A window pattern requires the specified vinyl weight and careful handling around the opening.

11. A divided bin
An optional divider turns one container into compartments for notions, cables, toys, or other small items. Check whether the divider is integral to the pattern or an add-on variation.
How to choose among them
- Need compact storage when empty? Start with a documented nesting pattern.
- Need a firm-sided container? Choose a pattern that explicitly calls for interfacing, foam, or padding.
- Need covered or identifiable contents? Look for the fold-over-lid and vinyl-window format.
- Need organization inside the bin? Select a divider variation.
- Need several shelf sizes? Compare the finished dimensions and number of sizes, not just the product photographs.
- Need paper instructions? Distinguish a free tutorial, downloadable PDF, and mailed printed pattern before purchasing.
Materials and tools
Depending on the chosen pattern, you may need fabric, lining, fusible interfacing or foam stabilizer, and—in the window design—12-gauge vinyl. Common tools listed by the cited projects include a sewing machine, fabric scissors, pins, chalk, matching thread, a hand-sewing needle, and an iron. Treat this as a planning list, not a universal bill of materials; follow the selected pattern’s own requirements.

Printing a downloadable pattern accurately
Sweet Red Poppy’s instructions specifically say to print at “Actual Size” or 100% and check the one-inch test square before printing the remaining pages.

- Select Actual Size or 100%; do not select “Fit to Page.”
- Print the page containing the test square.
- Measure the square. If it is not one inch, correct the printer scaling before printing the full pattern.
- Assemble pages according to the pattern’s marks, then verify grainlines, fold lines, and seam-allowance instructions.
Before cutting fabric
- Write the intended finished dimensions on the project sheet.
- Confirm whether dimensions describe the outside, inside, or approximate finished size.
- Check whether lining, interfacing, foam, vinyl, handles, a lid, or a divider are included.
- Preshrink fabric if the pattern recommends it.
- Make a test section when a window, bulky stabilizer, or unfamiliar construction method is involved.
The Bottom Line
For a documented starting point, compare MindyMakes, Sweet Red Poppy, SewCanShe, The Polka Dot Chair, and Missouri Star by size, nesting, structure, and features.
