The fastest way to refresh a room is to change one highly visible element: its color, lighting, storage, hardware, window treatment, or wall detail. The projects below range from simple weekend updates to more involved trim work, so you can choose an improvement that matches your budget, home, tools, and skill level.

“Easy” means manageable for a careful beginner—not risk-free and not suitable for every wall, cabinet, electrical system, or rental agreement. Before starting, check the product instructions, identify the wall or surface type, and plan for ventilation, dust containment, and safe tool use.

Choose the right project before you buy supplies

If you want the quickest visible result, start with cabinet hardware, a framed display, window treatments, battery-powered lighting, or one accent wall. Painted doors, peel-and-stick surfaces, floating shelves, cabinet painting, and entryway storage require more preparation. Board-and-batten detailing is the most involved project in this list because it combines layout, cutting, fastening, caulking, and painting.

Best for Good starting projects Main caution
Almost no construction Cabinet hardware, framed display, window treatments Measure carefully and use hardware rated for the load.
A quick visual change Accent wall, painted door, Peel-and-stick backsplash Surface preparation and product compatibility determine the result.
More storage Floating shelves, entryway organization Wall type, anchors, studs, and load ratings matter.
Architectural character Board-and-batten wall Accurate spacing and finish work take time.
Better task lighting Plug-in or battery-powered under-cabinet lighting Hardwired installation is an electrician job.

1. Paint one accent wall

An accent wall is one of the clearest low-cost ways to change a room. A deep color can create a focal point behind a bed or sofa, while a muted contrasting shade can give a dining area, office, or entryway more definition without repainting the entire space.

What you need

How to do it

  1. Choose one structurally sound, dry wall and remove outlet covers, artwork, and furniture near it.
  2. Fill nail holes and dents with spackle. Once dry, sand the repairs smooth.
  3. Clean the wall and lightly abrade glossy surfaces if the paint manufacturer recommends it.
  4. Protect floors and adjacent trim. Cut in around edges with the angled brush, then roll the main surface.
  5. Apply a second coat if needed, following the paint label for recoat time and ventilation.

Do not assume a new color will hide stains, glossy paint, or uneven repairs. A suitable primer may be necessary, especially over bare drywall, strong colors, water stains, or patched areas. The Home Depot’s accent-wall guidance also identifies chalkboard or whiteboard paint, decorative shelving, and peel-and-stick wall treatments as alternative accent-wall approaches.

A freshly painted door concentrates the transformation in one small, highly visible area. It can add contrast to a hallway, make a bedroom feel more finished, or create a stronger front-entry focal point without repainting the whole house.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Recommended process

  1. Remove the knobs, lockset, hinges, and other hardware when practical. If hardware cannot be removed, mask it carefully.
  2. Clean the door and repair dents, scratches, or holes with the appropriate filler.
  3. Sand carefully to smooth damage and dull glossy areas. Avoid creating unnecessary dust.
  4. Prime bare wood, stained areas, or incompatible existing finishes as required.
  5. Apply thin, even coats of door-and-trim paint with a high-density foam roller and an angled brush.
  6. Allow the finish to dry and cure according to the label before reinstalling hardware or closing the door for long periods.

For an exterior front door, plan around suitable weather. Temperature, humidity, direct sun, rain, and dew can affect drying and the final finish. A door that looks dry on the surface may still be soft underneath.

3. Replace cabinet knobs and pulls

New cabinet hardware is among the most accessible kitchen and bathroom updates. It changes the room’s visual language without requiring new cabinet boxes, countertops, or plumbing.

Measure before shopping. For existing pulls, measure the center-to-center distance between screw holes—not the overall length of the pull. Matching the existing spacing lets you swap hardware without filling old holes and drilling new ones. Take a photo of the current installation and label hardware by location if the screws differ.

Simple installation checklist

  • Measure existing hole spacing and check screw length.
  • Choose knobs or pulls that clear cabinet edges and neighboring doors.
  • Use a level and, for repeated pulls, a cabinet-hardware jig or template.
  • Test one piece before installing the entire set.
  • Tighten screws securely, but do not overtighten and damage the cabinet face.

If you are adding pulls where there were only knobs, make a full-size template first. Small alignment errors become obvious when several doors are next to one another.

4. Install floating shelves

Floating shelves add display or light-duty storage without the visual bulk of a cabinet. They work well in an entryway, office, bathroom, kitchen, or living room, but the shelf should not be treated as automatically suitable for heavy loads.

Plan for the wall and the load

Determine whether the wall is drywall, plaster, masonry, or another substrate. Locate studs where possible. Select brackets and fasteners rated for the intended load and compatible with that wall. Anchors are not interchangeable: a drywall anchor, a masonry fastener, and a hollow-wall toggle serve different purposes.

  1. Mark the shelf height with painter’s tape.
  2. Use a level to mark the bracket line.
  3. Attach brackets to studs where possible, using the manufacturer’s fasteners.
  4. Use compatible anchors for any attachment that cannot reach a stud.
  5. Install the shelf and check that it is level before loading it gradually.

Keep heavier objects close to the brackets and respect the manufacturer’s weight rating. If the shelf will hold books, cookware, tools, or anything that could injure someone when it falls, use a system specifically engineered and rated for that purpose rather than decorative hardware.

5. Add peel-and-stick backsplash or wall tile

Peel-and-stick backsplash products—often foam-backed vinyl or metal-surfaced plastic—offer a novice-friendly alternative to traditional tile because they generally avoid thinset and grout and create less cleanup.

For the best result

  1. Confirm that the product is approved for the intended location.
  2. Make sure the surface is clean, dry, smooth, sound, and free from grease.
  3. Measure the area and plan seams, corners, outlets, and the final partial piece before removing adhesive backing.
  4. Make careful cuts with a sharp utility knife and straightedge.
  5. Press the sheet firmly and evenly with a smoothing tool.

Do not assume every peel-and-stick product belongs directly behind a range, around a sink, or on a textured or damaged wall. Heat, moisture, cleaning chemicals, and surface irregularities can affect adhesion. Follow the product label for temperature limits, moisture exposure, removable installation, and any required primer or replacement adhesive.

6. Create a board-and-batten accent wall

Board-and-batten detailing adds architectural character with paintable MDF strips, trim, adhesive, nails, caulk, and spackle. It is more involved than painting because the finished appearance depends on accurate spacing and clean finish work.

Typical tools and materials

Installation sequence

  1. Measure the wall and draw the proposed layout. Account for baseboards, corners, outlets, switches, and existing trim.
  2. Decide the spacing before cutting anything. A full-size sketch or taped layout can reveal awkward narrow sections.
  3. Locate studs and mark them lightly.
  4. Cut and dry-fit the pieces, checking each board with a level.
  5. Secure the boards with construction adhesive and appropriately sized brad nails, avoiding hidden wires and pipes.
  6. Fill nail holes, caulk seams and inside corners, and allow the materials to dry.
  7. Prime exposed MDF or repaired areas as needed, then paint the wall and trim.

Do not rush the caulking stage. Uneven gaps and unfilled nail holes are much more visible after paint. If you do not have a safe cutting area or the tools to make accurate cuts, a simpler painted accent wall may provide a better result with less risk.

7. Install plug-in or battery-powered under-cabinet LED lighting

Under-cabinet lighting can make a kitchen, workbench, laundry area, or home office more useful while adding a noticeable evening glow. For a beginner-friendly project, choose plug-in or battery-powered fixtures rather than modifying the home’s wiring.

under cabinet LED lights are available in several formats, including puck lights, light strips, tape lights, and battery-powered pucks. Choose based on the cabinet layout, available outlet, desired control method, and whether you need focused task light or a continuous line of illumination.

Installation checklist

  1. Test the proposed placement before attaching anything.
  2. Keep the light source near the front of the cabinet for useful counter illumination, unless the manufacturer specifies another position.
  3. Plan the cord route before mounting. Use compatible cord or cable-management clips and keep connections accessible.
  4. Do not drill through cabinet panels until you have checked for wiring, plumbing, and the fixture’s installation requirements.
  5. Follow the instructions for spacing, mounting, power connections, dimming, and battery replacement.

Hardwired under-cabinet lighting is a different project. It may involve opening walls, extending circuits, installing boxes, or working under applicable electrical rules. Have a qualified electrician handle that work rather than treating it as a simple version of plug-in lighting.

8. Refresh kitchen cabinets with paint

Painting existing cabinet doors and drawer fronts can produce a substantial visual change while preserving the cabinet boxes. The preparation is the project: grease, worn finishes, poor adhesion, and rushed curing are common reasons a cabinet refresh fails early.

Cabinet-painting workflow

  1. Label each door and drawer so every piece returns to its original location.
  2. Remove doors, drawers, hinges, knobs, and pulls. Store the fasteners in labeled containers.
  3. Clean and degrease thoroughly, especially around handles and the range.
  4. Repair dents and chips. Sand or degloss as appropriate for the existing finish and the primer instructions.
  5. Prime with a product compatible with the cabinet material and existing coating.
  6. Apply thin coats of cabinet paint using a suitable microfiber roller, brush, or sprayer.
  7. Allow the stated drying and curing time before flipping pieces, stacking them, or reinstalling hardware.

Existing hardware can be cleaned, refinished where appropriate, or replaced. A bonding primer may be important on slick laminate or previously coated surfaces, but no primer guarantees adhesion to every substrate. Test the complete preparation and coating system in an inconspicuous area first.

9. Add under-shelf, closet, or entryway organization

A small organization zone can make an entryway, laundry area, closet, or home office feel newly designed without major construction. Start with the items you actually need to store rather than buying containers first.

Practical planning steps

  1. List the shoes, bags, coats, mail, cleaning supplies, or office items the zone must hold.
  2. Measure available width, depth, and height, including door swing and baseboard interference.
  3. Choose hooks, shelves, peg rails, baskets, or organizers rated for the intended load.
  4. Mark the layout with painter’s tape and check walking clearance, switches, vents, and nearby doors.
  5. Install into studs where possible or use anchors compatible with the wall.

For a narrow entryway, a shelf with hooks may be more useful than a deep cabinet. In a closet, adjustable shelving can accommodate changing storage needs. The goal is not a universal organization formula; it is a layout that leaves enough clearance and puts frequently used items where they can be reached easily.

10. Update window treatments

Replacing curtains, shades, or rods can change light control, privacy, and the perceived finish of a room. It is also a relatively low-commitment update if the existing window and wall are in good condition.

Measure and mount carefully

  • Decide whether the treatment will be inside-mounted or outside-mounted.
  • Measure the actual window or frame in the locations specified by the product instructions.
  • Check the rod or shade width, projection, and weight.
  • Use fasteners suitable for the wall or window frame.
  • Confirm that curtains and blinds will not obstruct a heater, door, ventilation opening, or emergency egress.

cordless shades can reduce dangling-cord hazards, but every product still requires installation and operation according to its instructions. Do not describe a standard curtain or shade as a smart-home upgrade unless a specific motorized product and its compatibility have been verified.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

11. Make a framed gallery or oversized wall display

A framed display creates a focal point without changing the room’s construction. It can be a gallery of several small pieces, one oversized print, a mirror, or a combination of artwork and photographs.

Use a layout before making holes

  1. Lay the frames on the floor and test several arrangements.
  2. Trace paper templates or use painter’s tape to represent each frame on the wall.
  3. Maintain intentional, consistent spacing rather than guessing from one frame to the next.
  4. Choose hanging hardware based on the actual weight and hanging method of each frame.
  5. Use a level before driving the final fastener.

Adhesive picture strips are not interchangeable with one another. Follow the manufacturer’s weight, surface, curing, and removal restrictions. Painted surfaces that are dusty, damaged, textured, damp, or recently coated may not be suitable. For heavier frames, use a properly rated anchor or fastener instead of relying on an adhesive product.

Safety checklist for beginner DIY updates

  • Protect yourself: Wear eye protection when drilling, cutting, or sanding. Use hearing protection around loud power tools.
  • Control dust: Contain work areas, clean with appropriate methods, and ventilate during painting, sanding, and adhesive use.
  • Take pre-1978 paint seriously: Homes built before 1978 should be treated as potentially containing lead-based paint unless inspected otherwise. Do not casually sand or disturb suspect paint; follow applicable lead-safe practices and obtain professional guidance where needed.
  • Use ladders correctly: Place ladders on stable, level surfaces, maintain safe contact, and keep them away from power lines.
  • Check before drilling: Pipes, wiring, and hidden structural elements may be behind walls, ceilings, cabinets, and trim.
  • Keep ventilation and labels in view: Follow every product’s drying, curing, temperature, storage, and ventilation instructions.
  • Do not improvise electrical work: Plug-in and battery-powered lights are appropriate beginner examples. Hardwired lighting should be evaluated and installed by a qualified electrician.

  1. The room feels dull: Try an accent wall, painted door, or framed display.
  2. The kitchen looks dated: Start with cabinet hardware or under-cabinet lighting before committing to cabinet paint.
  3. You need function, not just decoration: Consider floating shelves, entryway hooks, or closet organization.
  4. The wall lacks character: Board-and-batten can create a strong architectural effect, but allow extra time for cutting and finishing.
  5. You rent: Check the agreement first. Even apparently removable adhesives, paint, fasteners, and lighting mounts can damage a surface or violate the lease.

Buy materials only after confirming measurements, substrate, load, power source, and product limitations. A small, well-prepared project is usually a better refresh than an ambitious installation that has to be rushed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which DIY home update is easiest for a beginner?

Replacing cabinet knobs, hanging a framed display, updating window treatments, adding battery-powered lighting, and painting one accent wall are generally the least involved options. The right choice still depends on the condition of the surface and your ability to measure, prepare, and work safely.

Are peel-and-stick backsplash tiles safe behind a stove?

Not automatically. Check the specific product’s instructions for heat, moisture, and placement limits before installing it behind a range or cooktop. Products vary, and textured, greasy, damp, or damaged surfaces may prevent reliable adhesion.

Can I install under-cabinet lighting myself?

Plug-in and battery-powered fixtures can be suitable beginner projects when installed according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Hardwired lighting may require electrical modifications and should be handled by a qualified electrician.

How much weight can a floating shelf hold?

There is no universal answer. Capacity depends on the shelf, bracket design, fasteners, wall substrate, stud attachment, shelf depth, and how the load is distributed. Use only hardware specifically rated for the intended load and wall.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I paint cabinets without removing the doors?

Removing and labeling doors, drawers, and hardware usually produces a cleaner result and makes it easier to prepare all surfaces. Cabinet paint also needs adequate drying and curing time before pieces are reinstalled.

The Bottom Line

A targeted update can make a room feel substantially different without a full renovation. Start with the simplest project that addresses your room’s main weakness, prepare the surface carefully, use hardware and fasteners suited to the material, and treat electrical, lead-paint, ladder, and dust hazards as real constraints—not afterthoughts.
