To keep whole pumpkins from rotting, start with sound fruit, avoid bruising it, clean and dry the rind, then store it in a cool, steady, well-ventilated place. The steps below apply to whole pumpkins after harvest or purchase; cut or carved pumpkins need different food-safety handling.
Choose and harvest pumpkins carefully
1. Choose firm, intact fruit

2. Harvest when mature, before a hard freeze
A mature pumpkin has a hard rind and mature, uniform color. Iowa State Extension says mature pumpkins can remain in the field through a light frost, but a hard freeze can damage them. [Iowa State University Extension and Outreach]
3. Cut the vine and leave several inches of stem
Use a tool to cut the pumpkin from the vine rather than pulling it off. Leave several inches of stem attached: pumpkins with stems are less likely to rot, according to Iowa State Extension. 4. Prevent bruises and cuts during handling

5. Clean the outside
Iowa State Extension recommends washing the outer rind with soapy water or a 10% bleach solution—one part bleach to nine parts water—to remove fungi or bacteria that may cause rot. 6. Let the surface dry completely
Put pumpkins into storage dry. Surface moisture encourages decay, and temperature swings can create condensation on the rind. Store pumpkins in stable conditions
8. Keep them cool, but not cold enough to injure them
Iowa State and Oregon State recommend 50–55°F for storage. UMass Extension gives a broader 50–60°F range and warns that temperatures below 50°F can cause chilling injury. Keep the storage temperature steady and protect pumpkins from freezing; the guidance varies by source, so avoid treating one exact temperature as a guarantee. 9. Leave space for airflow
Arrange pumpkins in a single layer on a dry, ventilated surface, with space between fruits. Avoid stacking them or setting them on damp floors. Iowa State recommends cool, dry storage with airflow; UMass lists 50–70% relative humidity, while emphasizing that excessive moisture can cause problems. Separate and check stored pumpkins
10. Keep them away from ripening fruit and inspect regularly
Store pumpkins apart from apples, pears, and other ripening fruit: ethylene from ripening produce can shorten storage life. Why there is no guaranteed storage period
Pumpkin variety, maturity, damage, temperature, and humidity all affect how long a whole pumpkin keeps. The extension recommendations provide storage conditions, not a universal shelf-life promise or a measured guarantee that any one step will prevent rot. For a storage area you are unsure about, an indoor thermometer-hygrometer can help you check temperature and humidity, but it does not prevent decay on its own.
