There is no verified global top ten of the oldest heavy machines still doing commercial work. The strongest documented examples here are preserved machines that run for demonstrations, alongside dated museum collection pieces whose operating status is not established. That distinction matters: a machine restored to working condition—or listed in a collection—is not necessarily still earning its keep on a construction, mining, or logging job.
These ten examples are therefore not a ranked list of machines currently in commercial service. They show what is known about their age, original purpose, and present status, with each claim kept within what its custodian records.

For an old machine, “working” can describe several different things: active commercial work, occasional operation at a museum event, or restoration to operating condition without evidence that it runs regularly. Those are not interchangeable. The Historical Construction Equipment Association (HCEA), for example, marks some collection entries [R] to mean “restored to original appearance and operating condition”; that notation does not establish current commercial service or how often a machine runs. The clearest operational evidence in this group comes from custodians describing machines run for demonstrations. Other entries are dated collection objects, not confirmed working machines. The list is a set of documented examples, not a worldwide age ranking.

Two old machines documented in operation
1. 1907 Lombard Log Hauler #38
The Maine Forest & Logging Museum says its 1907 Lombard is fully functional and runs during select events. That makes it a preserved demonstration machine—not evidence of current commercial logging. The museum describes Lombard steam haulers as machines designed to pull trains of timber sleds along icy logging roads.
The museum says 83 steam-powered Lombards were built between 1901 and 1917. It gives the machines a rating of 90 horsepower and states that they could haul up to 300 tons of logs under optimal conditions; those are the museum’s figures, not modern performance measurements of #38. 2. 1909 Ruston Proctor No. 306 excavator
The Vintage Excavator Trust identifies No. 306 as built in 1909 and calls it the world’s oldest working excavator. That superlative is the trust’s claim. Its account says the machine originally worked in a Bedfordshire chalk pit, which closed in 1931; it was later recovered after spending nearly 50 years underwater and restored to working order. The page also describes demonstration weekends, but does not establish that the excavator is currently used for commercial digging. Vintage Excavator Trust.
Dated collection machines whose current operation is not established
The following machines are identifiable by date and type in museum or preservation rosters. Those listings provide useful historical context, but do not confirm that the individual machine runs. Two HCEA entries carry the association’s [R] restoration notation; the remaining entries should not be treated as operational on the basis of a roster alone.

Are these machines still used for real work?
Only in a carefully qualified sense. The Maine museum says Lombard #38 runs at select events, and the Vintage Excavator Trust describes Ruston Proctor No. 306 as restored to working order and associated with demonstrations. Those are real operations, but the available accounts do not show either machine doing paid logging or excavation today.
For the other eight entries, the cited records establish collection presence and dates, with HCEA’s [R] notation additionally indicating restored operating condition for the Marion 21 and Link-Belt K2. They do not establish that those machines currently run. No defensible conclusion about ongoing commercial use follows from a collection roster alone.

Why a “ten oldest” ranking would overstate the evidence
A true ranking would require comparable, machine-specific evidence: a reliable build date and confirmation of what “in use” means for each example. Here, only a small subset has owner or custodian statements about operation; several other dates come from collection listings, and those listings do not provide current operating status. The examples are useful for understanding the survival of early heavy equipment, but they cannot be presented as the ten oldest machines still working commercially—or as a proven worldwide top ten.
