There is no verified global ranking behind this list. It brings together ten compact dwellings and designs—from a bicycle-towed camper to historic houses and experimental prototypes—rather than proving which home is the world’s smallest. The examples were collected in a Treehugger feature updated March 2, 2022, and their measurements are not directly comparable: some are floor areas, one is given as length and width, and some have no reliable area figure at all. Treehugger’s feature is best read as a tour of different ways to use very little space.
How to compare these small homes
“Smallest” can mean a tiny floor area, a narrow urban footprint, a portable shelter, or a design that makes one room serve several purposes. The figures below are those reported by Treehugger in its 2022 feature, not the results of a consistent measurement study. Where the available sources do not establish an area or current availability, that uncertainty is noted rather than filled with a guess.

Ten small homes and designs
1. Eco Bike Trailer: a camper, not a conventional house
Treehugger reports about 16 square feet for this one-person bicycle camper associated with Paul Elkins in Washington state. The creator’s project page describes a photovoltaic panel, a bicycle generator, a sink, water and food storage, and a sleeping area. Those features make it a compact mobile shelter; they do not make it equivalent to a fixed residential house. Treehugger and Paul Elkins’s project page.
2. Roll It: a rotating experimental prototype
Associated with the University of Karlsruhe in Germany, Roll It is an experimental modular housing prototype, not a standard home offered for sale. ArchDaily describes a cylindrical structure organized around functional zones, including a bed-and-table area, an exercise cylinder, and a kitchen sink. Rotating the structure changes which functions are accessible. The reviewed sources do not give a reliable floor-area figure. Treehugger; ArchDaily.

3. Quay House: a narrow historic house in Wales
In Conwy, Wales, Quay House measures 10 feet by six feet according to Treehugger’s 2022 feature. That is a pair of linear dimensions, not an independently specified usable-floor-area measurement. Treehugger calls it the “Smallest House in Great Britain”; that description should not be confused with a verified record for the smallest home in the world. Treehugger.
4. Micro Compact Home: a cube with everyday functions
Architect Richard Horden’s Micro Compact Home is reported at about 77 square feet. Treehugger describes a compact cube design that accommodates sleeping, cooking, a bathroom, and dining. Its interest is in fitting several domestic functions into a small footprint, rather than in setting a world record. Treehugger.

5. Twelve Cubed Mini Home: its area is unclear
The listed size for this British Columbia design is not dependable. Treehugger’s wording refers to “10- and 12-square-feet iterations,” while a legacy Smart Cities Dive page has a headline referring to 144 square feet and copy with similarly unclear “10-square foot and 12-Square foot” phrasing. 6. Tumbleweed Houses: a small end of a changing model range
Treehugger reported 225 square feet for the smallest Tumbleweed Houses and named the Cypress model. The company’s current homepage presents several tiny-home RV models and three size classes, so the 2022 figure should not be treated as a guarantee of today’s smallest model or inventory. Check the company’s current model information for present offerings.

7. Tiny Texas Houses: cottages using salvage materials
Treehugger put these Texas cottages at about 250 square feet and highlighted their use of salvage materials. The company site’s current notices about operations and access are duplicated or inconsistent, so the feature does not establish present visitation, purchasing, or operating arrangements. 8. Nano House: a compact UK design
Treehugger reports 269 square feet for the Nano House, attributing the design to Nano Living System. The reviewed information does not confirm the company’s current status or whether this design is available now, so it is most useful here as an example of compact-home design rather than a current purchase option. 9. Single Hauz: an elevated dwelling concept
Treehugger reports 290 square feet for Single Hauz, a concept attributed to Poland’s Front Architects. Its elevated form makes it visually distinctive, but the reviewed sources do not confirm current construction or availability. 10. Toronto’s Little House: a compact urban home
Treehugger reports 312 square feet for Toronto’s Little House, also known as 128 Day Avenue, and associates its construction with Arthur Weeden in 1912. BlogTO described it in 2016 as just over 300 square feet and reported it as a full-time lived-in home at that time. That account does not establish its present occupancy or any global size ranking. What these examples reveal about building small
A very small dwelling depends on more than its footprint. The bicycle camper combines sleeping space with compact water and food storage; Roll It makes functions accessible by rotating its structure; the Micro Compact Home puts several ordinary domestic uses inside a cube. A historic urban house such as Toronto’s Little House is a different case again: it is a fixed home, not a portable shelter or a prototype.
For anyone assessing a small-home design, compare like with like. Ask whether the stated number is floor area or an outside dimension; whether the structure is mobile, fixed, or only conceptual; and whether the source documents a lived-in dwelling or a design study. Those distinctions matter more than arranging these ten examples into a precise ranking that their evidence cannot support.
