How to read this ranking
This is a current U.S. brand-level ranking, not a laboratory test and not a guarantee that every washer from one brand will outlast every washer from another. A brand can sell excellent and mediocre machines at the same time, and front-load, high-efficiency top-load, agitator top-load, compact, and washer-dryer-combo models can have very different reliability records.
The ranking gives the most weight to reliability evidence, then considers owner satisfaction, serviceability, warranty positioning, product range, and the quality of available U.S. data. The word worst means weakest overall recommendation under that method; it does not mean that every machine from that brand is a bad purchase.

The strongest national source is Consumer Reports’ washer-brand analysis. Its latest analysis draws on the experiences of nearly 65,000 members and 74,479 washing machines purchased new between 2014 and 2024. CR estimates the likelihood of a problem within five years and also measures whether owners would recommend the brand. Yale Appliance provides a different kind of evidence: first-year service calls among appliances it sells and services in its territory. J.D. Power adds customer-satisfaction context, but satisfaction is not the same as a long-term durability test.
That distinction matters. Yale’s 2026 service-rate figures for LG and GE concern front-load washers, while its Speed Queen comparison concerns top-load washers. Those percentages should not be treated as a single national league table.

10. Kenmore: weakest current recommendation
Kenmore remains a familiar U.S. laundry name, but it is not one vertically integrated washer manufacturer. Different generations and models may come from different suppliers, so the brand name provides less consistent information about the machine in front of you.
That model-by-model uncertainty is the main reason Kenmore ranks last here. In the available 2026 Consumer Reports buying-guide data, the Kenmore 42273 front-load washer appears with an overall score of 61. That score does not prove that every Kenmore washer is unreliable, but it is materially below many current examples from LG, GE, Samsung, Maytag, Whirlpool, and Electrolux.
Best for: A shopper finding a substantial discount on a particular Kenmore model after checking independent reviews, parts availability, and local service.
Watch out for: Assuming that an old reputation or familiar badge guarantees consistent manufacturer support. Confirm who made the exact model, who services it in your area, and whether replacement parts are readily available.

Amana is a value-oriented brand within the Whirlpool portfolio. Its appeal is simple: conventional controls, broad retail availability, and a lower purchase price than many premium machines.
Current CR buying-guide listings show that some Amana models can score respectably. The NFW5800HW, for example, appears with an overall score of 75. That is a reminder not to dismiss a specific model solely because it carries the Amana name. However, the brand does not show the repeated, stronger reliability signal associated with the top-ranked brands in this comparison.
Best for: Budget buyers who want a conventional washer and have dependable local repair access.
Watch out for: Treating the lower price as proof of better long-term value. A cheaper machine can become expensive if it needs an early repair or if local service is difficult to obtain.

Samsung sells some of the most feature-rich washers in the category. Large capacities, connected controls, attractive displays, and smart-home integration can make its machines appealing, especially when promotions reduce the purchase price.
The concern is not a lack of innovation; it is uneven current reliability evidence. CR reports that Samsung front-load and high-efficiency top-load reliability slipped in its latest surveys. Samsung also moved into a non-recommended tier among compact washers. Those results make it risky to use the brand name alone as a reliability shortcut.

Technology complexity is another ownership consideration. J.D. Power’s appliance-satisfaction research indicates that consumers’ experiences are affected by durability concerns as well as functionality and technology complexity. More features can be useful, but they can also mean more components and more troubleshooting when something goes wrong.
Best for: Buyers who genuinely value smart features, large capacity, and design, and who have a capable authorized servicer nearby.

Watch out for: Buying a heavily connected model without checking service coverage, repair wait times, and whether the retailer handles installation and warranty coordination.
7. Whirlpool: practical, available, and firmly middle of the pack
Whirlpool has several practical advantages: broad U.S. distribution, familiar controls, a large parts ecosystem, and a wide selection of conventional and front-load machines. Those factors can matter more than a small difference in a survey score if you need a washer repaired quickly.
Its current CR examples are respectable but not dominant. The WFW6720RW, WFW5720RR, WFW862CHC, and WFW9620HC appear at roughly 70 to 74 in the available 2026 buying-guide listings. Yale Appliance also says it stopped carrying Whirlpool laundry products, so its latest service-rate article does not provide a direct current comparison for Whirlpool. That missing comparison reduces confidence; it is not evidence that Whirlpool washers are universally poor.
Best for: Shoppers who prioritize availability, familiar operation, accessible parts, and a broad choice of price points.
Watch out for: Assuming that a Whirlpool badge automatically places a model above an Amana or Maytag alternative. Compare the exact design, warranty, price, service network, and recent model-specific reviews.
6. Maytag: solid mid-tier choice, but not a separate reliability category
Maytag occupies a higher position in Whirlpool’s brand lineup and often appeals to buyers who want a heavier-duty image, larger capacity, or particular cycle options. Those can be legitimate reasons to choose one model over another.
But the available evidence does not justify assuming that every Maytag washer will substantially outlast every Whirlpool or Amana washer. The MFW7020RF appears with an overall CR score of 75 in the 2026 buying-guide data: respectable, but not a category-leading result.
Best for: Buyers who like a specific Maytag design, cycle set, capacity, or retailer discount and can verify local service.

5. Electrolux: capable front-load specialist with narrower coverage
Electrolux has a meaningful U.S. front-load presence and is attractive to shoppers who prioritize fabric-care features and a more premium front-load design. The ELFW7437AW appears with an overall CR score of 73 in the available 2026 guide.
Its middle-to-upper position reflects a reasonable product case rather than overwhelming brand-level proof. Electrolux has less broad U.S. service and model coverage than LG, GE, or Whirlpool, particularly for shoppers outside major metropolitan areas. A good washer can still be a poor practical purchase if parts or an authorized technician are difficult to find.
Best for: Front-load buyers who value fabric care and find a competitive price from a retailer with competent service.

Watch out for: Assuming national brand recognition equals local support. Before ordering, ask who will perform warranty repairs, how parts are obtained, and whether the seller provides installation and haul-away.
4. Bosch: premium compact specialist, but not directly comparable with full-size brands
Bosch is a premium appliance brand, but its U.S. washer presence is concentrated in compact laundry. That makes it a strong candidate for an apartment, accessory dwelling unit, narrow laundry closet, or other space where a full-size machine will not fit.
It is difficult to compare Bosch directly with brands that sell large-capacity top-loaders and full-size front-loaders. A compact Bosch may be an excellent solution for a small home while being the wrong choice for a family that needs maximum drum capacity. The major current national reliability datasets also provide less broad Bosch washer evidence than they do for LG, GE, Whirlpool, Samsung, or Speed Queen.
Best for: Compact-space buyers who value quiet, premium construction and are willing to accept higher purchase and repair costs.
Watch out for: Comparing purchase price or capacity without accounting for the compact format. Confirm dimensions, venting or drain requirements, stacking compatibility, parts access, and local service before purchase.
If you need to raise a compact unit for easier loading, a washer pedestal can be useful, but pedestals and stacking equipment are highly model-specific. Use only an accessory approved for the exact washer and dryer combination.
3. GE: strong all-around choice with useful odor-management features
GE ranks highly because its evidence is comparatively balanced. Yale’s 2026 data reports an 8.5% first-year service rate for GE Appliances front-load washers. Yale also highlights GE’s built-in fan and Microban-related approach to odor prevention. These features address a common front-load ownership concern, although they do not eliminate the need for cleaning and moisture control.
CR’s current buying-guide examples range from the low 70s to the upper 70s. The GE Profile PFW955SPWDS appears at 77, while the GE GFW350SSYWW appears at 76. The higher score of a Profile model should not be interpreted as proof that every Profile washer is superior to every standard GE model; compare the actual machine.
Best for: Households wanting a full-size washer with broad retailer and service coverage, useful odor-management features, and a balanced feature set.

Watch out for: Treating GE’s 8.5% Yale service figure as a national failure rate. It represents Yale’s first-year service experience in its own sales and service territory, and service performance can vary by product line and model.
2. LG: strongest mainstream balance
LG is the strongest mainstream brand in this ranking. Yale identifies LG as its most reliable front-load washer brand for 2026 and reports a 2.7% first-year service rate for the LG front-load category in its comparison. CR also reports substantial LG representation and strong results across washer categories, while still emphasizing that reliability varies by category.
LG’s appeal is the balance: strong reliability evidence, useful capacity, high-efficiency designs, broad availability, and a substantial range of front-load and top-load options. It is a better default recommendation for most households than choosing a brand solely for rugged simplicity or maximum smart-home features.
The trade-off is that an LG front-loader still needs correct installation and routine care. LG’s official Tub Clean and washer-maintenance guidance covers cleaning the tub, drain-pump filter, inlet filters, and door gasket, as well as leaving the door and dispenser open so moisture can evaporate.
Best for: Most mainstream buyers seeking a reliable combination of capacity, efficiency, features, and purchase value.
Watch out for: Skipping maintenance or choosing a seller with weak service support. Electronics and front-load moisture management still matter after installation.

Do not use the table as a substitute for checking the model number. A front-load washer should be compared with other front-load washers, a compact unit with other compact units, and an agitator top-loader with similar top-load designs.

What to check before buying any brand
- Identify the washer category first. Decide whether you need a front-loader, high-efficiency top-loader, agitator top-loader, compact washer, or combo unit. Reliability and ownership complaints are not interchangeable across those categories.
- Research the exact model. Brand averages hide differences in controls, pump design, door and gasket arrangements, capacity, cycle options, and electronics. Use the brand ranking as a starting point, then investigate the model number.
- Verify local service before paying. Ask the retailer or manufacturer who handles warranty repairs in your ZIP code. Confirm that the technician services the exact brand and that common parts can be obtained without long delays.
- Measure the complete installation. Check width, depth with the door open, height under cabinets, water connections, drain location, electrical requirements, and the route from delivery entrance to laundry room. Compact and stacked installations require especially careful measurements.
- Price the whole job. Compare delivery, installation, old-unit haul-away, required hoses, pedestals or stacking equipment, floor preparation, and any service-plan cost. The advertised appliance price is not the ownership price.
- Read the warranty and exclusions. Pay attention to what is covered, who performs the repair, whether labor is included for the full term, and whether installation errors or misuse are excluded.
- Plan maintenance from day one. A washer that is regularly cleaned, kept level, supplied with the correct detergent, and allowed to dry between loads is less likely to develop preventable odor, residue, or vibration complaints.
Maintenance that can change the ownership experience
Front-load and connected washers are not maintenance-free. Some complaints that look like a reliability failure are caused or worsened by trapped moisture, detergent residue, a blocked filter, dirty inlet screens, poor leveling, or an incorrectly installed drain.
For odor or residue: Follow the owner’s manual for the Tub Clean cycle and cleaner type. LG’s official guidance describes tablet, powder, and liquid washing-machine cleaning formats and recommends routine tub cleaning. If your manual permits them, washing machine cleaner tablets can be a convenient maintenance consumable. They can help with routine residue and odor control, but they cannot repair a failed pump, bearing, motor, seal, or control board.
After a front-load cycle: Wipe the door gasket, remove trapped debris, leave the door ajar, and leave the detergent dispenser open long enough for moisture to evaporate. Do not close a wet machine and expect the next cycle to remove all buildup.
For drainage and water supply: Inspect the drain-pump filter according to the manual and check inlet screens when water flow is slow. If a hose is cracked, kinked, or incompatible with the installation, replace the washer drain hose or washing machine inlet hoses with parts that match the washer and plumbing connections. Shut off the water and disconnect power before performing work, and use a professional if the installation is not safely accessible.
