Dried ornamental corn and husks can become quick cabinet accents, table settings, wreaths, garlands and outdoor container displays. The ten ideas below move from simple ties and arrangements to larger pieces that need a wreath form, wire or adhesive.

Prepare the corn and husks first

Ornamental corn varies widely in color, shape and ear size. Iowa State University Extension notes that it is sold through farmers’ markets, roadside stands, craft shows and garden centers; small ears are useful when you need a compact arrangement. For homegrown ears, Wisconsin Extension advises leaving them on the stalk until the husks are no longer green, then curing them in a warm, dry area for about a week.

Dried corn husks sold for tamales work for shaped decorations. Soak husks in water until pliable, arrange or trim them, and let them dry fully before displaying them. For heavier ears attached to wreaths, use wire through or around the frame and treat adhesive as additional support rather than the only fastener.

Quick accents and small displays

1. Cabinet color

Tie a few dried ears together with a twine bow and attach the bundle to a cabinet door, pantry, or open shelf. This is the fastest project and works especially well with small ears or a tightly limited color palette.

  • Assembly: expose the ear tops without tearing the husks, bind each bundle with ribbon, add beads, and distribute the bundles so the branch remains balanced.

Safety and storage

Keep every dried ear, husk and other dried plant material away from heat sources and open flames. University of Illinois Extension horticulture educator Martha A. Smith warns: “Keep dried materials away from heat sources and open flames so they do not accidentally catch fire. Dried material burns very easily.” Use the solar-light option instead of candles, and do not place dried arrangements against radiators, heaters, fireplaces or hot light fixtures.

Dried materials kept for many years can become brittle and shatter. Inspect stored pieces before reuse, handle them gently, and discard components that have become dangerously fragile.
