The best office plants are the ones that fit your actual light, available space, watering habits, and office temperature—not a universal ranking. Snake plant, pothos, ZZ plant, Chinese evergreen, cast-iron plant, dracaena, philodendron, spider plant, peace lily, and parlor palm are practical candidates, but they differ in shape and care. Choose a plant that can adapt to the conditions you already have.
10 office plants to consider
These are useful options, not a source-backed ranking from best to worst. Match the plant to its location: a dim corner, a shelf, or a bright desk may call for different choices.
1. Snake plant
Snake plant (Dracaena trifasciata, formerly Sansevieria trifasciata) is upright and suits low-light offices and people who may forget to water. It tolerates prolonged dryness; overwatering is a greater risk. Cornell’s guide suggests indirect sunlight and watering every two to three weeks, but treat that interval as a context-specific guide rather than a schedule: check the soil and adjust for the room and light. University of Maryland Extension; Cornell Botanic Gardens.
2. Pothos
Epipremnum aureum trails over a shelf or from a hanging pot, making it useful when desk space is tight. It tolerates low light, though very low light can reduce the yellow variegation in some foliage. Water when the soil is dry to the touch rather than following a fixed calendar. University of Maryland Extension; Cornell Botanic Gardens; Associated Press.

4. Chinese evergreen

UF/IFAS describes it as popular in homes and offices, commonly growing about one to three feet tall and about as wide; allow room for that spread. University of Minnesota Extension also lists it among low-light plants. UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions; University of Minnesota Extension.
5. Cast-iron plant

University of Maryland Extension; UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions.
8. Spider plant
Chlorophytum comosum has arching or trailing leaves and may produce plantlets. Cornell and UF/IFAS describe it as easy to care for, while University of Minnesota Extension lists it among medium-light plants. It is not the strongest choice for a very dark corner. Choose for your office’s light and layout
Assess the light at the plant’s location
“Low light” does not mean no light. University of Minnesota Extension describes it as conditions such as a north window or a fairly dark corner; plants in lower light grow more slowly and use less water. Check the actual spot rather than judging from the room as a whole. University of Maryland Extension; University of Minnesota Extension.

Match the plant to the footprint
- For shelves or hanging containers: consider pothos or a vining philodendron.
- For a narrow upright position: consider a snake plant or ZZ plant.
- For fuller foliage or flowers: consider Chinese evergreen, spider plant, peace lily, or parlor palm, checking the individual plant’s expected size where dimensions are not established.
Account for weekends and temperature shifts
Offices may be cooler or warmer when heating and air conditioning schedules change. Consider those shifts before choosing a plant, and avoid exposing it to sudden changes in light or temperature during transport; Maryland Extension notes that abrupt changes can shock plants. Vermont Extension also calls attention to air conditioning and weekend conditions. University of Maryland Extension; University of Vermont Extension.

Check the soil instead of following a calendar
Feel the soil before watering. Plants in lower light generally use less water and dry more slowly, so a routine that works near a bright window may leave a plant in a dim corner too wet. Snake plants are particularly vulnerable to overwatering; for pothos, wait until the soil is dry to the touch. Consider who shares the space
If children or pets can reach a plant, verify the exact species and its ingestion risks before buying it. Some philodendrons, including heart-leaf types, are toxic if eaten. A flowering peace lily produces pollen, which may be a concern for sensitive colleagues. UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions; UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions.
Do office plants meaningfully clean the air?
Do not count on a few desk plants to remove meaningful amounts of indoor pollutants. The early NASA plant research used sealed test chambers, which do not demonstrate practical air cleaning in an occupied office with ordinary air exchange and ongoing pollutant sources. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, in a page last reviewed in January 2024, reproduces this statement: “There is currently no evidence that a reasonable number of houseplants remove significant quantities of pollutants in homes and offices.” Iowa State University Extension and Outreach; UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions.
