It was that some companion apps requested broad phone permissions—including microphone and precise-location access—and connected to third-party tracking services.
That distinction matters. A phone app asking for audio permission is not the same as an air fryer containing a microphone, recording conversations, transmitting them, or using them for advertising. But the privacy concern is still real, especially when an appliance app demands information unrelated to cooking.

What the original investigation found
The provocative headline comes from a Gizmodo article published on December 16, 2024. Its underlying reporting came from Which?, which assessed 12 smart products across four categories: air fryers, smartwatches, smart speakers and smart TVs.
Which? tested three smart air fryers and their companion Android applications:
#1 Best Overall

| Product | Which? privacy score |
|---|---|
| Cosori CAF-LI401S | 41% |
| Xiaomi Mi Smart | 47% |
| Aigostar Air Fryer 7L | 48% |
These were privacy-test scores, not cooking, reliability or overall product-quality ratings. The assessment considered consent, transparency, security, data minimization, trackers, data portability, deletion and access rights. The testing used Android apps, so behavior on iPhone, in another country, or in a later app version may differ. Which? explicitly noted that iOS behavior can differ.
What permissions did the apps request?
Which? reported that all three air-fryer apps requested permission to access precise location and to record audio on the Android phone used for testing. The Aigostar app also requested gender and date of birth during account creation, although Which? reported that those fields were optional.
Depending on the app and phone configuration, smart-appliance software may also request access to contacts, the camera, photos or stored files, nearby devices, Bluetooth, network connections and account information.

A permission request is not proof that the app used the permission. Apps sometimes request broad access because of shared software components, features available only in certain markets, or poor permission design. The useful question is: What feature needs this permission, and does the app still work without it?
Is the air fryer itself listening?
The evidence cited here concerns the companion phone app, not proof that the appliance was continuously listening.

These are separate claims:
- A phone app requests microphone permission.
- The app actually activates the phone’s microphone.
- The air fryer contains a microphone.
- Audio is recorded, transmitted or stored.
- Audio is used for advertising or profiling.
Which?’s test established the first point. It did not establish all the others. In particular, the reporting did not prove that the tested fryers were recording kitchen conversations.
Xiaomi disputed the practical significance of the audio permission. The company said that the audio permission in its Xiaomi Home app was not applicable to the Xiaomi Smart Air Fryer because that appliance did not directly support voice commands or video chat. That explanation does not erase the permission request, but it is an important qualification: the request alone is not evidence of secret eavesdropping. Which? published the manufacturers’ responses.

Where could the data go?
Which? identified Facebook trackers in the Xiaomi app, along with Pangle—the TikTok-for-Business advertising network—and Tencent services, depending on the user’s location. It also reported that the Aigostar and Xiaomi products sent personal data to servers in China, while noting that these transfers were disclosed in their privacy notices. See Which?’s investigation for the reported data flows.
That does not establish that Facebook, Pangle or Tencent received cooking habits, identifiable conversations or audio recordings. It establishes the presence of trackers and reported transfers—not the contents of every transmission.
Nor does disclosure automatically make extensive collection proportionate or desirable. A privacy notice may tell you that data is transferred without making the transfer necessary for an air fryer or easy for an ordinary buyer to understand.
Rank #3
- AIR CRISP TECHNOLOGY: 400℉ superheated air surrounds food for hot, crispy results with little to no oil.
- 4-IN-1 FUNCTIONALITY: Features 4 customizable cooking functions—Air Fry, Roast, Reheat, and Dehydrate for maximum versatility. A powerful1750-watt air fryer that’s built for everyday use.

- GUILT-FREE FRIED FOODS: Up to 75% less fat than traditional air frying methods. Tested against hand-cut, deep-fried French fries.
- FROZEN TO CRISPY: Cook frozen foods in just minutes for an extra-crispy finish.
Why would an air-fryer app need location?
There are legitimate possible explanations. Location may help localize recipes, determine regional availability, select a server, support time-zone scheduling or enable location-based automations.
But a possible explanation is not demonstrated necessity. For an appliance whose basic job is heating food, precise location can reasonably appear excessive unless the manufacturer clearly explains the feature it enables and offers a less intrusive alternative, such as approximate location or manual region selection.
What the manufacturers said
- Xiaomi said privacy, transparency, accountability, user control, security and legal compliance were core values. It said it did not sell personal information to third parties and that some services, including Tencent services, varied by region. Xiaomi also said the audio permission did not apply to the Smart Air Fryer’s functionality.
- Cosori said its smart products were subject to internal compliance requirements and must comply with GDPR, but said it could not comment without the specific test reports.
- Aigostar did not respond to Which?’s request for comment.
The fairest summary is therefore not “the report proved air fryers spy.” It is that Which? found broad or insufficiently explained permission requests and third-party data connections, while at least one manufacturer disputed whether the audio permission applied to the appliance at all.
What the evidence supports—and what it does not
Supported by the cited testing
- Three tested air-fryer apps requested precise-location and audio-recording permissions on Android.
- The Xiaomi app connected to services associated with Facebook, Pangle and Tencent, with some services depending on location.
- Which? reported data transfers to servers in China from the Aigostar and Xiaomi products.
- Privacy transparency and data-minimization practices were concerns.
- Some smart-device functionality could be reduced when privacy consent was refused.
Not established by the cited testing
- That every air fryer contains a microphone.
- That the tested appliances continuously recorded conversations.
- That kitchen audio was secretly stored or sold.
- That every country, phone platform, firmware version or app version behaves identically.
- That a particular U.S.-sold air fryer violated U.S. law.
What changed by 2026?
This was not only a Christmas 2024 scare. On June 16, 2025, the U.K. Information Commissioner’s Office published draft guidance for manufacturers and developers of internet-connected products, specifically using interconnected air fryers as an example. The guidance addressed informed consent, clear privacy information, data minimization, user rights, deletion and responsible collection and sharing. Read the ICO’s smart-product guidance announcement.
In June 2026, the ICO again warned that smart household products can collect extensive personal information. Its campaign reported that only 14% of surveyed people had a clear understanding of how smart devices collect, use and share data, while 97% owned at least one smart device. Those are U.K. figures, not U.S. consumer statistics. See the ICO’s 2026 warning.

What this means for U.S. buyers
The Which? testing was conducted in a U.K. market context using Android applications. It does not show what every U.S.-sold model currently collects. App permissions, privacy policies, server locations, firmware and features can vary by country and operating system. Xiaomi also said some services were region-specific.
U.S. privacy protections vary by state and sector. The broader U.S. data-broker discussion in the original Gizmodo article, including a December 2024 Consumer Financial Protection Bureau proposal related to the Fair Credit Reporting Act, is adjacent context—not a finding that U.S. air-fryer manufacturers violated the law. Read the original U.S. context in Gizmodo’s report.
Before buying a U.S. model, check the actual app listed for your region, its permissions, account requirements, retention policy, deletion process and international-transfer disclosures.
Before buying: a privacy checklist
- Ask whether connectivity adds enough value. Remote controls, notifications, recipes and scheduling may not justify an account or data sharing.
- Look for a non-connected model. Physical controls avoid the companion-app data layer.
- Read the app’s privacy information first. Look for location, microphone, contacts, advertising, analytics, retention, deletion and international transfers.
- Check whether the fryer works without an account or app. Some models may lose features—or require connectivity for setup.
- Check security-support commitments. Which? found that some tested smart devices did not clearly state how long security updates would be provided.
During setup: deny what cooking does not need
- Download the app only from the official Apple or Google app store.
- Create a unique password rather than reusing your email password.
- Deny microphone, contacts and precise-location access unless a feature genuinely requires them.
- Choose approximate location or “while using” access when your phone offers those choices.
- Decline optional advertising personalization and data sharing.
- Leave optional demographic fields blank.
- Enable two-step verification if available.
- Install app and firmware updates.
- Record the account email and device identifier so you can later remove the fryer.
The ICO recommends reviewing permissions, using strong passwords and two-step verification, keeping software updated, checking advertising controls and deleting stored information when disposing of a smart product. See the ICO’s consumer advice.
If the app refuses to work without invasive permissions
First, check whether the permission can be granted temporarily and then revoked. Test whether the fryer’s manual controls still work. Contact the manufacturer and ask exactly why the permission is required and whether the feature can be used without an account.

You can also request access to or deletion of your personal data, or return the product if app connectivity is effectively mandatory and the privacy trade-off is unacceptable. Do not assume that revoking a permission leaves every feature intact: Which? reported that many tested smart products lost functionality when users declined privacy consent. Which?’s impact report discusses this limitation.
Before selling, gifting or disposing of the fryer
- Remove the appliance from the vendor account.
- Delete the account if you no longer need it.
- Revoke connected services and third-party integrations.
- Perform the manufacturer’s factory reset.
- Uninstall the phone app only after unlinking the device and account.
- Ask whether server-side records are deleted; a local reset may not erase cloud data.
Which? reported that the Cosori app clearly described deletion within the app but did not make it clear whether associated information had also been removed from company servers.
Which privacy trade-off makes sense?
| Choice | Privacy | Convenience | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Non-smart air fryer | Strongest; no companion-app layer | Manual operation | Most buyers who want simple cooking |
| Smart fryer with restricted permissions | Better control | Some app features remain | Users willing to configure settings |
| Fully connected smart fryer | Weakest control over app exposure | Remote controls and notifications | Users who genuinely use those features |
| Separate smart-home network | May reduce local-network exposure | More technical | Advanced users |
| Return and replace | Eliminates the unwanted trade-off | Requires another purchase | Buyers facing mandatory permissions |
A separate Wi-Fi network does not stop the phone app from collecting data. A VPN or network blocker may disrupt updates and features. Blocking advertising trackers does not necessarily stop first-party collection. Network tools such as Pi-hole or a consumer firewall can be useful for advanced users, but they are not guaranteed fixes and may be excessive for a single appliance.

The practical verdict
Your air fryer probably is not secretly listening to your kitchen. The documented privacy problem is narrower and more credible: companion apps may ask for permissions that seem excessive, connect to advertising or analytics services, and transfer data in ways that are difficult for consumers to understand.
For most buyers, the simplest privacy-preserving choice is an air fryer that does not require an app. If you choose a smart model, treat its companion software like any other connected device: inspect permissions before setup, deny unnecessary access, limit optional sharing, and delete both the account and cloud-held data when you stop using it.
