Yes—Xiaomi’s Mijia Smart Aquarium was a real product. It was announced in China in December 2022 and promoted through Xiaomi Mall crowdfunding at a reported launch price of 349 yuan, roughly $50 at the time. Its headline features were app-controlled feeding, lighting and water flow, plus a multi-stage filtration system.
That does not make it a maintenance-free aquarium. Current international availability, pricing, app compatibility and long-term support remain unverified. Xiaomi’s official commerce site still lists a related product called the Mijia Smart Desktop Fish Tank, but the indexed page does not establish whether it is currently stocked outside China or identical to the original crowdfunding model.

What Xiaomi released
Contemporary coverage described the product as the Mijia Smart Aquarium; Xiaomi’s official commerce page uses the related Chinese name 米家智能桌面鱼缸, translated as “Mijia Smart Desktop Fish Tank.” It was a Mijia ecosystem product rather than a standard Xiaomi smartphone accessory.
A report published on December 26, 2022, said crowdfunding on Xiaomi Mall in China was expected to begin within days. The reported crowdfunding price was 349 yuan, approximately $50 using the exchange-rate comparison given at launch. That was a historical China crowdfunding price—not a current U.S. retail price. Contemporary launch coverage reported the original specifications and features.
#1 Best Overall
- Snap-fit connecting structure lets you finish refitting without tools during aquarium daily maintenance
- Separated storage space loads various filter media to clear floating particles and break down organic waste in tank water
- Reserved heating element slot keeps steady water temperature to create suitable living surroundings for aquatic creatures
- Split housing design allows easy removal for filter media cleaning without draining all water from your aquarium
- Modular structure fits the inner tank layout perfectly without cutting or altering tank components
What could be controlled remotely?
The aquarium’s smart functions reportedly included:
- Fish feeding: Users could activate feeding through the Mijia mobile app.
- Water flow: The app could control the circulation system.
- Lighting: Users could adjust the aquarium’s lighting effects remotely.
Those features could be useful for basic routines or for checking that a scheduled task has been completed while away from home. However, the available launch material does not confirm scheduled feeding, a built-in camera, remote fish viewing, water-temperature readings, pH or ammonia sensors, water-quality alerts, or operation outside mainland China.
It is also not documented whether the tank used Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or another connection method, nor whether it required a mainland-China Xiaomi account or China-region server selection. Buyers should verify those points before importing one.
Filtration and the meaning of “self-cleaning”
The aquarium was advertised with a five-stage back-filter system. The reported design combined physical filtration with spaces for beneficial bacteria to grow, supporting the biological processes that help manage toxic nitrogen compounds in an established aquarium.
The pump was described as patented, anti-clogging and self-cleaning. That wording needs careful interpretation:
| Feature | What it can reasonably mean |
|---|---|
| Anti-clogging pump | A design intended to reduce blockage from debris and make circulation more reliable. |
| Biological filtration | Filter media provide a surface for beneficial bacteria as the aquarium cycles. |
| Self-cleaning aquarium | A much broader claim that would imply little or no human maintenance; the available evidence does not support that conclusion. |
Launch reporting also repeated a claim that water changes might be needed only once every six months, and connected the product with trips of three months or longer. Those are product-promotion claims, not universal aquarium-care rules. Water-change frequency depends on the tank’s volume, livestock, feeding, temperature, plants, stocking density and test results.

Even with the advertised filtration, owners should expect to cycle the aquarium, test water, clean algae from the glass, top up evaporation, inspect the pump and filter media, and perform water changes when conditions require them.

The reported hardware specifications included:
- Five-line ultra-clear UHA glass.
- A claimed light transmittance of 91.3%.
- 24 white LED beads with a reported color-rendering index above Ra 90.
- 16 full-color RGB LED beads.
The lighting was promoted as producing sunlight-style or changing sunlight effects. The 91.3% transmittance figure should be treated as a product-description claim because the available material does not identify the measurement standard or test conditions.
There is also no supplied evidence for wattage, spectrum graphs, PAR measurements, timer granularity or replacement-light availability. The lighting should therefore not be assumed to be optimized for demanding live plants or suitable for reef aquariums.
What it could—and could not—do
| Reported capability | Not established by the available evidence |
|---|---|
| Remote feeding through the Mijia app | Remote camera monitoring |
| App control of water flow | pH, ammonia or other water-chemistry sensing |
| App-controlled lighting | Guaranteed global Xiaomi Home compatibility |
| Five-stage back filtration | Maintenance-free operation |
| Anti-clogging pump design | Universal six-month water-change intervals |
Is it really low-maintenance?
The strongest case for the Mijia aquarium is convenience, not the removal of aquarium husbandry. Automation can dispense food and control equipment, but it cannot reliably compensate for overstocking, unsuitable fish, a failed pump, evaporation, algae growth or a sudden water-quality problem.
Before adding fish, the tank still needs an appropriate cycle. Owners must choose livestock suited to the actual water volume, which has not been confirmed in the supplied material. Small desktop aquariums can be less forgiving than larger systems because overfeeding or a dead animal can change water conditions quickly.
Remote control also has practical limits. A Wi-Fi outage, cloud-service problem, app failure or local power cut can stop automated functions. An automatic feeder may jam or dispense too much food. The anti-clogging pump may still be affected by algae, plant matter or blocked filter media. Anyone leaving fish unattended should have a manual feeding and emergency plan rather than relying entirely on the app.

Availability and buying status
The product’s launch history is clearer than its current retail status:
- December 26, 2022: Contemporary coverage reported the China launch and an upcoming crowdfunding campaign.
- Late December 2022: Crowdfunding was expected to open on Xiaomi Mall.
- 349 yuan: Reported original crowdfunding price.
- Current status: Xiaomi has an official page for the Mijia Smart Desktop Fish Tank, but its accessible indexed content does not verify current price, stock, international shipping, regional app support or model equivalence. View Xiaomi’s official product page.
There is no verified evidence in the supplied sources of a U.S. launch. An imported unit could involve a China-region account, incompatible app settings, a different plug or voltage requirement, limited language support, unavailable replacement parts and no local warranty.
Who might consider it?
It may appeal to beginners who want an integrated desktop aquarium, existing Mijia users who value app control, and people seeking automated feeding and decorative lighting for a compact setup.

Pre-purchase checklist
Before buying an imported or newly listed unit, confirm:
- The exact model number and tank dimensions.
- Actual water volume and whether it suits the intended fish.
- Whether the Mijia app supports the buyer’s country, language and account region.
- Whether the feeder accepts the preferred food type and size.
- Availability and cost of replacement filter media, pumps and lighting parts.
- Plug, voltage and power requirements.
- Local warranty, returns and repair arrangements.
- Whether feeding, filtration and lighting can be operated manually if the app or cloud service fails.
- Whether the lighting is decorative or documented as suitable for live plants.
- Whether the manual supports the advertised water-change and travel claims for the intended setup.
Verdict
The Mijia Smart Aquarium was an interesting China-market smart-home product that combined a desktop tank with app-controlled feeding, flow and lighting. Its five-stage filtration and anti-clogging pump could reduce some routine work, but they do not eliminate cycling, testing, cleaning, maintenance or water changes.
For most buyers, the decisive issue is not the old 349-yuan launch price. It is whether the exact model is currently available with dependable regional app support, replacement parts, compatible power hardware and a usable warranty. Until those details are confirmed, it should be treated as a historical China launch and an intriguing product concept—not a universally available, maintenance-free aquarium.
