What remains before opening
By October 2026, crews had placed the freeway bridge, planted about 6,000 native plants on top and completed the adjacent Agoura Road overpass. Remaining work included hauling and compacting soil to connect the crossing to the freeway corridor and nearby land. Wet, clay-rich soil can become slick and impede that work, making rain a schedule risk.

Where is the crossing, and what does it span?
The crossing is at Liberty Canyon in Agoura Hills, northwest of Los Angeles. It spans ten lanes of U.S. 101 and an adjacent stretch of Agoura Road, linking publicly protected wild lands on the north and south sides of the freeway. The project’s official FAQ lists these dimensions:

The FAQ calls it the world’s largest wildlife crossing. Its two structures total 55,925 square feet by the dimensions listed there. The project describes nearly one acre of native vegetation atop the crossing and more than ten acres of restored coastal sage scrub and oak savannah habitat connected to it.
Why is the crossing important for wildlife?
U.S. 101 fragments the Santa Monica Mountains, limiting wildlife movement and gene flow between habitats. The crossing is intended to restore that connectivity for multiple native species. Mountain lions are a particular priority: isolation and inbreeding threaten the population’s long-term viability. Those are the problems the project aims to address; the crossing’s ecological results will depend on wildlife use after it opens and are not yet established.

How the design is meant to help animals cross
Fencing is designed to keep animals off the roadway and guide them toward the crossing. Landscaping and vegetation cues are intended to make the route more inviting and resemble habitat. The project FAQ says the location forms a natural funnel between open spaces and that National Park Service researchers documented mountain lions attempting to cross in the area.

Groundbreaking took place on April 22, 2022, and the initial completion target was 2025, according to the project FAQ. The FAQ attributes the schedule extension to construction logistics, utility relocation, and two consecutive springs of record precipitation and flooding, which left sites needing more time to dry. In October 2026, rain remained a possible obstacle to the final soil work.

What did the project cost?
The Los Angeles Times reported a current project price of $114 million on October 8, 2026. The project FAQ also gives $114 million as the estimated Caltrans cost. It cautions that cost comparisons with other crossings may not be like-for-like: this figure includes multiple project stages, while other reported figures may cover construction capital costs alone.

No. The construction site is closed to the public, and the crossing itself is not a visitor walkway. Nearby recreation trails on both sides of the freeway offer views, and docent tours have begun.
