Why Is My Samsung Refrigerator Working but the Freezer Is Not Freezing?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the refrigerator compartment is cool but the freezer is warm, do not assume the compressor or refrigerant system has failed. The cause may be a setting, Cooling Off/Demo mode, a door that is not sealing, blocked airflow, heavy frost, or a fault in the fan, sensor, defrost system, or control board. Start by measuring the freezer’s actual temperature, then work through the checks below in order.

Keep the freezer door closed as much as possible while you troubleshoot. A freezer should generally maintain 0°F (-18°C) or below for safe frozen-food storage, although some Samsung models use approximately -2°F as an ideal setting.

First: protect the food and measure the actual temperature

A Samsung display setting is not proof that the freezer is at that temperature. Use a freezer appliance thermometer between frozen packages, rather than placing it in water or leaving it exposed near the door. Record the reading and allow up to eight hours for it to become meaningful.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the freezer is above 0°F, treat the situation as a temperature-control problem even if some food remains partly frozen. Soft ice cream, thawing ice, or packages that are cold but no longer solid are warning signs, but one food item alone is not a reliable temperature test.

Food-safety limits

  • An unopened, full freezer generally holds its temperature for about 48 hours.
  • An unopened, half-full freezer generally holds its temperature for about 24 hours.
  • Perishable refrigerated food is generally considered safe for about four hours without power.
  • Food held above 40°F for more than two hours should be discarded.

Do not taste food to decide whether it is safe. When in doubt, discard it.

Freezer is warm and the rear wall is heavily frosted Perform a safe complete defrost, then monitor whether the frost returns.
Freezer remains above 0°F after these checks Arrange qualified Samsung or appliance service, especially if an error code is present.

1. Check the temperature setting and Power Freeze

Set the freezer to 0°F or lower, unless the manual for your specific Samsung model gives a different recommendation. Samsung controls vary between top-freezer, bottom-freezer, French-door, and Family Hub models, so use the owner’s manual when the panel does not respond as expected.

On supported models, activate Power Freeze after recording the current settings. This temporarily makes the freezer cool at maximum capacity and can help show whether the appliance responds to a cooling command. It is a diagnostic aid, not a repair. Turn it off when it is no longer needed and allow the appliance time to stabilize.

Make sure Cooling Off mode is not enabled

Samsung refrigerators can enter Cooling Off, also called Demo or Shop mode. The lights and fans may operate in this mode, making the refrigerator appear to be running, while the compressors do not cool the compartments. Common panel indications include:

  • OF OF
  • O FF
  • OFF OFF
  • Temperature bars that scroll across the display

The button combination for leaving this mode differs by model. Do not guess or repeatedly press random controls. Find the exact model number and follow the model-specific Samsung instructions.

2. Check the freezer door, drawer, and gasket

A freezer door that is slightly open can admit warm, humid air continuously. That raises the temperature and can produce frost that eventually blocks the vents.

Inspect the entire closing path. Look for:

  • Packages projecting beyond the shelves or baskets
  • An ice container, shelf, drawer, or bin that is not fully seated
  • A misaligned drawer or door track
  • Food caught between the gasket and cabinet
  • A warped, torn, dirty, or folded door seal

Perform the paper or dollar-bill test

  1. Place a sheet of paper or a dollar bill across the gasket.
  2. Close the door on it.
  3. Pull gently.

Some resistance indicates that the gasket is contacting the cabinet. If the paper slides out easily, clean the gasket with mild dish soap and a damp cloth, dry it, and repeat the test at several points around the door.

4 Pack Refrigerator Freezer Thermometer Large Dial Analog Thermometer
  • Measuring range:-20~80℉
  • Material type:Stainless steel
  • Installation mode:Wide base and integrated hook allow it to be placed anywhere in the refrigerator
  • Easy to read
  • Great quality

If the seal remains ineffective or is visibly damaged, a Samsung refrigerator freezer door gasket may be appropriate—but only after you verify the complete model number. Refrigerator seals are not universal, and a visually similar part may not fit or seal correctly.

3. Restore airflow around the vents

Cold air must circulate through the freezer. Do not pack food tightly against the rear wall or cover the vents with bags, boxes, drawers, or ice containers. Samsung’s frost guidance recommends leaving approximately two inches of space in front of vents.

Move packages away from the vent openings and avoid loading hot food into the freezer. Repeatedly opening the door also introduces moisture, which can freeze around the evaporator cover and progressively restrict airflow.

After rearranging the contents, close the door and allow several hours for the temperature to fall. Do not repeatedly change the temperature setting while waiting; constant adjustments make it harder to tell whether the change helped.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Look for heavy frost or ice blocking the rear wall

Heavy frost on the freezer’s rear wall, around the vents, or over the evaporator-cover area is a major clue. The refrigerator may still feel cool while the freezer becomes warm because air can no longer pass over the evaporator and circulate through the compartment.

Frost is commonly associated with warm, moist air entering through:

  • A door left open
  • A gasket that does not seal
  • Blocked or misaligned drawers
  • Hot food placed inside
  • A damaged door seal

How to defrost safely

For light frost, wipe it away once the surface is soft. A plastic freezer scraper can be used gently for light or moderate buildup, but do not use metal tools or sharp objects.

For heavy buildup, a complete defrost is safer and more effective:

  1. Move food to another working freezer or an insulated cooler.
  2. Unplug the refrigerator or switch off its circuit only if you can do so safely.
  3. Keep the doors open and place towels around the appliance to catch meltwater.
  4. Allow the ice to melt naturally.
  5. Dry the compartment completely before restoring power.
  6. Reconnect the refrigerator and allow it to cool before restocking.

Never use a hair dryer to melt frost. Heat can damage refrigerator components and create an electrical hazard around water. Do not puncture ice, scrape evaporator coils, or bypass a safety control.

If substantial frost returns quickly after a proper defrost and the door seals correctly, the problem is probably not just a one-time obstruction. That pattern can indicate an airflow, evaporator-fan, defrost, sensor, or control issue, but it does not identify one failed part without model-specific testing.

5. Power-cycle the refrigerator once

If there is no obvious error code, Samsung recommends unplugging the refrigerator—or switching it off at the circuit breaker—for approximately two minutes, then restoring power.

After power is restored:

  • Confirm that Cooling Off mode is not active.
  • Set the freezer to the desired temperature.
  • Keep both doors closed as much as possible.
  • Check the temperature after several hours.
  • Allow up to 28 hours for the refrigerator to reach the selected temperature fully.

Do not repeatedly power-cycle the unit or change the settings every few minutes. A compressor and air-circulation system need time to operate through a complete cooling period.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Record and research any error code

Before resetting the refrigerator, photograph or write down any code on the display. Samsung error codes differ by model and are not always interpreted correctly by generic repair lists.

Examples listed by Samsung include:

  • 5E: refrigerator defrost-sensor error
  • 8E: freezer ice-maker sensor error
  • 40E/40C: ice-room fan error
  • 84C: compressor lock condition

This list is not exhaustive, and a code does not always mean that the most obvious named part should be replaced. Use Samsung Support or the manual for the exact model, particularly when a code returns after a reset.

Find the exact model number before buying parts

The model and serial label is generally located inside the refrigerator compartment. Record the complete model code, including suffixes. Samsung’s support resources allow owners to search for manuals, troubleshooting information, parts, and repair options by model code or product name.

Potential parts in a poor-cooling repair may include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Evaporator fan assembly
  • Freezer temperature sensor or thermistor
  • Defrost sensor
  • Defrost heater
  • Door gasket
  • Control components

These are possibilities, not a diagnosis. Samsung’s parts information identifies fan motors, temperature sensors, door gaskets, and defrost heaters as categories that can affect cooling. A listing such as the Samsung DA32-00029U freezer temperature sensor describes how a sensor reports temperature to the control board, but that specific part is not a universal recommendation, and its listing indicates that the original part is no longer available.

Only consider a model-number-qualified evaporator fan assembly, defrost component, or freezer temperature sensor after the relevant fault has been established. Replacing a part based only on “the refrigerator works but the freezer does not” can waste money and may leave the actual problem unresolved.

What the symptom does—and does not—prove

A working refrigerator compartment does not rule out a freezer cooling failure, but it also does not prove that the compressor, fan motor, sealed system, refrigerant charge, sensor, or control board is defective. Different models distribute cold air differently, and a fault in one airflow path can affect the freezer more noticeably than the refrigerator.

A sealed-system diagnosis or refrigerant repair requires appropriate equipment and qualified service. Do not open refrigerant lines, add refrigerant, bypass controls, or dismantle electrical components unless you are trained and equipped to do so.

When to call for Samsung refrigerator service

Arrange qualified service when:

  • The freezer remains above 0°F after checking settings, Cooling Off mode, the door seal, vents, frost, and power.
  • Heavy frost returns soon after a complete defrost.
  • An error code persists or returns.
  • The door gasket is damaged and replacement is needed.
  • The evaporator fan is not operating or is making unusual noise.
  • You suspect a defrost-system, control, compressor, or sealed-system fault.
  • Food safety is at risk and the freezer cannot maintain temperature.

Before contacting service, write down the measured freezer temperature, the time it takes to rise, any error code, whether the rear wall is frosted, whether the fan can be heard, and what troubleshooting you have already performed. This information can reduce repeated diagnostic work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a Samsung refrigerator work while the freezer does not freeze?

Yes. The compartments can be affected differently by airflow, frost, sensors, fans, or controls. The symptom does not by itself prove that the compressor or refrigerant system has failed.

How cold should a Samsung freezer be?

Use 0°F or below as the general frozen-food target. Many Samsung models use approximately -2°F as an ideal setting, so check the manual for the exact model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How long should I wait after resetting a Samsung refrigerator?

Check for improvement after several hours, but allow up to 28 hours for the refrigerator to reach the selected temperature fully with the doors closed.

Is it safe to use a hair dryer to defrost a Samsung freezer?

No. Samsung warns against using a hair dryer. Let heavy frost melt naturally, use towels to catch water, and never use sharp or metal tools on the ice or evaporator area.

Should I replace the freezer temperature sensor first?

No. A warm freezer can result from settings, door leakage, blocked airflow, frost, fans, defrost components, sensors, controls, or sealed-system faults. Confirm the model and diagnose the fault before ordering a part.

The Bottom Line

Measure the freezer before replacing anything. Set it to 0°F or below, rule out Cooling Off mode, confirm the door seals, clear the vents, safely defrost heavy frost, and perform one proper power cycle. If the freezer still cannot reach 0°F—or an error code returns—stop guessing at parts and arrange model-specific Samsung or qualified appliance service.
